Baptism candles, what to do with them. What signs are associated with baptism?
Baptism is a very important moment in life. During this sacrament, a person becomes a Christian, as if born again, but spiritually, and joins the church. People undergo this ritual following the example of the Son of God, who only after baptism went out to preach.
This article will talk about the holiday of Epiphany itself, which Orthodox Christians celebrate on January 19, and about the baptism of a person, about the rules, traditions and customs accepted at the christening of infants and adults.
January 19
On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates one of the 12 Great Holidays - Epiphany. The holiday was established in honor of the gospel story of the baptism of Jesus Christ by the prophet John the Baptist in the Jordan River.
There is another name for the holiday - Epiphany, since on this day all three divine hypostases were revealed to people: God the Father, who proclaimed from heaven that Jesus Christ was his beloved son, Jesus himself, as the Son of God, and the Holy Spirit, who appeared in the form of a white dove.
The Russian people have always loved this holiday, so there are numerous signs associated with it.
By this time, Christmastide was ending - the time of public festivities, and people were preparing to cleanse their souls in order to celebrate the great holiday in spiritual and physical purity. Signs for Epiphany are still common among the people.
On this day, the consecration of water takes place, which is collected and stored all year, used as a shrine. The water is blessed twice: the first time - on Epiphany Eve, January 18, after the Divine Liturgy, the second time - the next day, on a holiday. Folk signs for Epiphany claim that only the water that was consecrated on January 19 has healing powers. Actually this is not true. Both rites of consecration are absolutely the same, so you can collect Epiphany water on both January 18 and January 19.
Recently, the ancient custom of going to Jordan has been revived. After the church service, people, led by a priest, go in procession to the nearest body of water, where ice has been cut in the shape of a cross or circle. The priest performs the rite of blessing the water, and then the bravest believers plunge into the ice hole. This is not at all necessary, but at Epiphany, according to the sign, by plunging into the Jordan, you can wash away your sins. But these are all external actions, and the only way to get rid of sins is through repentance.
Signs also say that if you plunge into an ice hole on Epiphany on January 19, you will ensure your health for the whole year. This is a very controversial point: the health of an unprepared person can only worsen from this, so be prudent.
What you cannot do on Epiphany on January 19 is sin, just like on any other day. This is a big Christian holiday, so there is no need to do household chores: cleaning, washing, sewing, knitting. This day must be completely dedicated to God: go to church, celebrate the liturgy, and draw blessed water.
At Epiphany, contrary to popular belief, you cannot guess, just like at other times. Fortune telling is a grave sin that must be confessed to a priest.
The signs and traditions associated with this day are numerous and varied, but you need to treat them wisely, since many of them are relics of pagan times, and some are outright fiction.
Baptism - new birth
The christening of a child or adult is a big and significant event in his life. The Church considers this a new birth, initiation into Christian life. The one who is baptized is given a guardian angel who will accompany the person throughout his earthly life.
Baptism is one of the seven sacraments of the church, so you need to prepare for it carefully. First, choose godparents. You need to remember that godparents cannot be husband and wife. Otherwise, after the child’s baptism, they will have to stop intimate life. Godparents are not just people barely known to parents who saw their godson once in their life - during baptism. They take responsibility for the child and, when necessary, replace parents.
A child is usually baptized on the 40th day after birth or later. There are times when the baby is very weak, then the mother can baptize him herself soon after birth. To perform the ritual you need holy water. The mother sprinkles the baby’s head with it three times, saying: “The servant of God (servant of God) is baptized - he calls the name - in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen". But this is a special case if there is a threat to the child’s life.
The mother is not supposed to be present at baptism, since in order for her to be able to enter the church after giving birth, she needs to undergo a ceremony called “Churching” or “Introduction”. A mother with an already baptized child stands in the vestibule of the temple, and the priest reads special prayers. Then the priest leads them to the sole (the steps in front of the altar). The mother remains waiting, and the priest takes the child in his arms and, if it is a girl, places it on the entrance icons, and if it is a boy, he carries him to the altar and carries him around the altar. Then mother and baby are sprinkled with holy water.
Perceivers
In church practice, godparents are called godparents. They are responsible for the spiritual upbringing of the godson and, since the child is still too small, during a church ceremony they renounce dark forces in his place and express a desire to be with Christ. If an adult is baptized, he does not have to take spiritual parents.
According to tradition, the godfather must buy a cross for the baby, and the godmother must buy clothes for baptism.
Parents often ask the question: what to do with the baby’s baptismal shirt? Baptismal garments must be stored and should not be washed. If the baby gets sick or some other unpleasant situation happens, they put it on the child or simply cover him with this thing.
The christening of a girl and a boy is no different. The sacrament is performed in exactly the same way. According to the rules, a girl’s christening can be performed by one godmother if she could not find a godfather, and a boy can be baptized by one godfather if there is no godmother. Signs about extinguished candles, dropped things and the like are nothing more than pagan relics.
Before baptizing a child, godparents must carefully prepare. Firstly, they themselves must be baptized, and secondly, they must know the prayers “Our Father” and “Creed”, since they will need to be read during the sacrament. It is advisable for recipients to confess and receive communion shortly before baptism, as well as have a conversation with a priest who will explain to them their responsibilities.
Usually several closest relatives are invited to the sacrament. You need to register in advance at the temple, where you will be informed of the day and time of the event. It is now not difficult to purchase the items necessary for baptism: ready-made kits are sold in churches.
You only need to purchase additional candles according to the number of people present. The candles are lit and kept lit in the hands until the sacrament ends. Candles must be handled carefully, not lost, but taken home and stored for prayer if the child gets sick.
If a girl is baptized, then the godfather holds the child, and all the godmother needs to do is stand with a lit candle. And vice versa, the boy is held by the godmother, and the candle is held by the godfather. You don’t need to do anything special with it, just take it home later.
Since the mother cannot be present at the baptism, the godmother must replace her for this period. What the godmother should do during baptism is to console the child if he cries, make sure that at the end all the baptismal things and candles are taken away, as well as the towel that was used to dry the baby. The baptismal towel is treated in the same way as the rest of the baptismal clothing: it must be dried, not washed, and stored in case the child becomes ill.
There are especially many signs for the baptism of a child. For example, what does it mean if a child cries during the sacrament, or a sign if the baby wets himself during baptism? There is no need to attach much importance to all this. A child cries most often because he is in an unfamiliar environment, and if he wets himself, this is a natural physiological process.
Beliefs accompany people almost every day of their lives. For example, it is believed that before baptism one should not show a child to strangers. There is a rational grain in this, since the baby is not yet protected by the church sacrament and does not have his own guardian angel.
What could not be done within 12 hours after baptism was to wash the child, because he had recently been immersed in blessed water. Usually after the sacrament the baby becomes calmer and often falls asleep immediately. Therefore, after the child’s baptism, it is better not to disturb him or frighten him with loud sounds.
After leaving the church, it is customary for us to celebrate christenings. Festive traditions and customs require sitting down to a table with an abundance of various dishes, which symbolizes the future prosperity of the baby. However, in these times of almost constant financial crises, not every family can afford a sumptuous table, so this tradition is gradually fading into oblivion. But what you shouldn’t do at a christening is drink alcohol immoderately. After all, the church says quite clearly: “Do not get drunk with wine.”

The difference between the baptism of a boy and a girl
The main difference between the baptism of a boy and a girl is that a male child is brought into the altar after immersion and confirmation, while a female child is not. According to Orthodox tradition, only men can be in the altar of the temple. The difference also lies in the correspondence of the gender of the godfather to the child being baptized.

When is the best time to baptize a baby?
According to custom, the baby is baptized on the 8th or 40th day after birth. There are circumstances that can affect the timing of the baptism of an infant: if the baby is sick, the illness poses a threat to life, you can baptize him earlier. Orthodoxy says that after christening a person has a guardian angel who is always behind his right shoulder. He will protect the baby and can save him. It is believed that the more prayers addressed to an angel, the stronger he will be.
Some people prefer to wait until the little man grows up and becomes stronger. The other side of the coin is that while the child is an infant, he sleeps in the arms of his godmother and calmly endures the sacrament. The older he gets, the more difficult it is for him to serve quietly. At 2 years old, the baby is spinning, wants to run, go outside. This creates difficulties for the priest and godparents, because the action can last more than an hour. Bathing a baby in the font is also easier.
Then the little man will be more protected from life’s adversities. In the church, you can agree that the baby is named after the saint on whose day the baby’s birth date falls.
Recommendations for preparing for the baptism ceremony of a small child
How to organize a child's christening? You need to visit the temple where the procedure will take place. In the church shop you can ask any questions you may have. The church minister in the shop will offer you to read a brochure about baptism, which describes all the rules. The date of birth of your baby will be written down, and the desired church name of the baby and the names of his godparents will be asked. For the ceremony, a voluntary payment is made in the form of a donation, which goes to the needs of the temple. How much should I pay? The amount of donation may vary from church to church.
Before the sacrament of baptism, godparents must be sent for an interview with the priest. If the baby’s mother and father come along with them and take part in the conversation, this will only be a plus. The priest will tell you how the baptism of a young child is performed, and what you need to take with you. He will definitely ask during the conversation whether the mother and father and the baby’s adoptive parents are baptized. If not, then the unbaptized should be baptized before the sacrament is performed on the baby. During the conversation, the priest will give recommendations to the baby’s family and set a day and time for the child’s baptism. On this day, you should arrive early in order to have time to get your bearings and prepare. Many parents invite a photographer to their child’s christening and take photos and videos. You need to know that to record videos and take photographs, you must ask permission and blessings from the priest.
The priest will be able to tell you more about the sacrament and instruct the godparents, with whom a preliminary conversation must be held. Parents of the baby can also attend.
Who to choose as godparents?
Usually, godparents are people of the same sex as the baby: for girls it is a woman, for boys it is a man. You can invite two godparents of different genders. Then the baby will have a spiritual father and mother.
The question of who is worthy to become your baby's godfather is very important. Godparents become the baby's second parents. Think about who treats the little man better, who is ready to bear responsibility for him, give him a spiritual example, and pray for him? Most often, relatives and family friends become recipients.
You can choose your mother’s or father’s sister or brother, a close friend or family friend, or the baby’s grandmother or grandfather as your godfather.
The recipients must be baptized themselves - this must be done in advance. Parents need to understand that the issue of choosing godparents must be approached very seriously.
Who can't become a godfather?
The laws of baptism in the Orthodox Church are such that the following cannot become a godparent:
- atheists or non-believers;
- monks and nuns;
- mentally ill people;
- children under 15 years of age;
- drug addicts and alcoholics;
- promiscuous women and men;
- spouses or sexually close people;
- baby's parents.
Brother and sister cannot be godparents to each other. If you are baptizing twins, you must not do it on the same day. Twins may well have the same godparents.
If twins are growing up in a family, then they need to be baptized on different days, but another pair of godparents is not needed for this - it is enough to find two reliable and pious people
Memo for godparents
- Appearance. The baby's adoptive parents must come to church with their crosses around their necks. If it is a woman, she wears a skirt that is below the knee and a jacket with sleeves to the temple. A headdress is required for the godmother. The rules for being in church also apply to a man’s clothing: you cannot expose your knees and shoulders, that is, even in hot weather you will have to give up shorts and a T-shirt. A man is in the temple with his head uncovered.
- Purchases and payment. People often ask, who should buy a cross for a child’s baptism? Who pays for the procedure? There is a certain procedure for baptizing a newborn child and preparing for it.
- It assumes that the godfather buys a cross for the godson and also pays for the baptism. The godmother buys a cross for her goddaughter. It is best to choose a cross made of ordinary metal or silver. It is not customary to use a golden cross at a ceremony. When choosing a cross, make sure that it cannot injure the baby; let the cross have oval edges.
- In addition to the godmother's cross, you need to buy a towel, baptismal shirt and sheet in advance. She buys kryzhma - the material in which the baby is baptized. Caring mothers keep the material for many years, as it helps to cure the child from illness. The sick little man is wrapped in kryzhma, and he begins to recover. It should be stored in a place hidden from prying eyes, since it is believed that through it it can be used to damage the baby.
- Preparation. People appointed as spiritual parents are obliged to prepare themselves for the baptism ceremony of a small child. Preparation includes strict fasting, starting a few days before the event, and refusal of entertainment and pleasure. The day before, it’s a good idea to take communion in church, before going to confession. You must take your child's birth certificate with you to church. You can watch the video of the baptism in advance to roughly understand the sequence of events.
- Prayer. Recipients are required to learn the “Creed” prayer. This prayer is read by the priest three times during the sacrament of baptism of the child; the godfather may also be asked to read it by heart.
Nuances of christening
- A little man can be baptized on any day of the week - on holidays and weekdays, on Lent and on an ordinary day, but most often christenings take place on Saturday.
- The foster children are supposed to pick up the child from the parents in advance and go with him to church on the appointed day and time. Their parents follow them. There is a sign that the godfather should chew a clove of garlic and breathe in the baby’s face. In this way, evil forces are driven away from the baby.
- Only the closest people are present at the ceremony in the temple - the parents of the boy or girl receiving the sacrament, maybe grandparents. The rest can come to the house of the baptized person after the ceremony and celebrate this event at the festive table.
- Baptism of an infant does not always take place in the church itself. Sometimes the priest conducts the ceremony in a specially designated room.
- If necessary, parents can arrange a ceremony at home or in the maternity hospital. To do this, you need to come to an agreement with the priest and pay all his expenses for organizing the sacrament.
- The priest reads prayers and anoints the newborn. Then he cuts a lock of hair from his head, as if making a sacrifice to God. Then the baby is lowered into the font three times, the priest says: “Here is the cross, my daughter (my son), carry it.” Together with the priest, the godfather says: “Amen.”
- The child's parents also come to church, observing Orthodox customs. They dress as is customary in the temple. During the ceremony, the mother can pray for her child. Such prayers will surely be answered.
- In the evening, relatives and friends come to the holiday with gifts. Their choice depends on wealth and imagination: toys or clothes, baby care items or an icon of the baby’s patron saint.
Traditionally, baptism takes place on the premises of a church, but in some circumstances parents may request an outdoor ceremony - for example, at home or in the maternity ward
Features of christenings for boys and girls
The christening of a girl and a boy differs little. During the ritual, the godfather carries the male child behind the altar, but the godmother does not carry the female child there. The christening of a newborn girl requires the presence of a headdress, that is, a headscarf is put on her. When a little boy is christened, he is in the temple without a headdress.
If both godparents participate in the ritual, then first the godmother holds the boy, and after bathing in the font, the godfather picks him up and carries him to the altar. The girl is held in her arms only by her godmother. This is the main difference in the ritual for children of the opposite sex.
If the procedure for baptizing a small child is followed, the child’s blood and spiritual parents will prepare for christening, and the child will grow up healthy and cheerful. When he grows up, he will become a highly spiritual person striving for a righteous life.

We want to name our daughter Yana. Is this an Orthodox name, or will she be called something else at baptism?
Vitaly
Tatiana Kibyakova
Could be so.
Or maybe it’s better to just douse it with cold water at night? And drink holy water.

Preferably. This first garment, worn immediately after baptism, symbolizes the purity of the newly baptized person and the purity of the grace abiding on him.

Yes, they will call it by a different name. Similar in sound to Anna. Unless you wish otherwise. There is no saint named Yana in the calendar.

I want to baptize my daughter, but our dad is not baptized, is it possible to baptize and we get 2 godparents and a godmother since I am half Tatar but baptized and my sister, but she is a Muslim, wants to be our godmother, as if my friend, she is a Christian, wants to baptize us in church and the same with the godfather, Muslim and Christian
Alina
O. Vitaly, tell me, please. Perhaps in the summer we will go to give the baby communion together with my sister and her son (both of them are not baptized). Is there now a rule that the unbaptized cannot be present at certain moments of the liturgy, or was this the case before? If there is, what moment is it, can they look at our communion?
And yet, is it impossible to give communion to an unbaptized child? The baby really wants at least a little grace, but his mother doesn’t want to baptize him.
Marina
Father Vitaly, hello. In 2 weeks, a friend is going to baptize her son, I will be a godmother and have already bought a baptismal headband and a diaper, but white with blue embroidery, it is very important that the underwear be pure white or something like this will be suitable and also: should a boy be covered at baptism? head, because men go to church with their heads uncovered? Thanks in advance for your answer.

ONLY a person of the Orthodox faith can be a godfather (godfather). It is the godfather who makes vows to God for the baby and undertakes to raise the child as a good Christian.
One godfather is enough. For a boy - a man, for a girl - a woman.

Yes, no one has canceled this rule. After the exclamation “Declare yourselves,” all unbaptized people must leave the temple. (Although in practice, unfortunately, they don’t leave). Communion is both a Sacrament and a mystery for unbelievers.
Unbaptized people should under no circumstances be given communion!!!

Preferred, but not required. In practice, there are baptismal shirts of different colors and shades. Sometimes adults have to put on black shirts too. :-O
You won’t even be able to cover the boy’s head - you will still have to take off the cap - and they will smear the head with oil, and with Holy Myrrh, and trim it….
And it is not customary for a man to cover his head in church.
Hello, would you be so kind as to tell a husband and wife if they can baptize one child. Those. Can my husband and I baptize a boy? My husband and I got married

Hello. Can you tell me which saint or saint to pray to so that the birth goes well?
Marina
Thank you very much for the answer.
Svetlana
Hello! Please tell me what to do with the baptism candles? I think they should have been placed in the church after the sacrament. And we took them home.
Svetlana
Father, please tell me, in order to embroider icons, do you need to take a blessing? And is it possible to consecrate them later?
Alina
Olya Pogrebnyak, Svetlana Fomina - if I’m not mistaken, the priest has already answered such questions.
A husband and wife cannot be godparents of one child (but can be godparents of different children of the same parents)
After baptism, candles could be placed in the church, but now they can simply be taken and placed under a candlestick (there is usually a box with cinders there).
Alina
Nadezhda Tkachenko. I will answer, if you don’t mind, Father Vitaly will correct you if something is wrong. Pray to both the Lord and the Blessed Virgin Mary. If you have nowhere to look, and you want to pray correctly, contact me, I will help you find the prayers you need. Pregnant women pray to the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, the Helper in Childbirth icon (I took a paper icon with a prayer like this to the delivery room).
Natasha
Hello. I read all the questions and answers and learned a lot for myself, for which I thank Father Vitaly. I have a few questions:
1) I read that according to church rules, a child can be baptized from the age of 16, I didn’t know this and the church didn’t warn us, so I baptized a boy at the age of 14. What to do now, he is not considered baptized?
2) On June 13, we want to baptize our son, he will be 43 days old, we have one godfather, and we want to take 2 godparents (my sister and husband). My husband’s sister lives in America and rarely comes, so I want to take my sister as godmother, since she will see the child more often, communicate, he can always bring her supper and cut her hair for a year... Question: is the presence and participation of both sisters in church necessary? and baptism? Or is it enough for one to be in the church, and just register the second? Thanks in advance for your answer.
Oksana
Hello. Please tell me. My daughter's name is Victoria. They were also baptized with this name. And then someone said that there is no such name in Christmastide. Is it true? And what should you do if this is the case?
Irishka
Hello, I have the same question as Natasha Solovyova: I also didn’t know and became the boy’s godmother when I was 15 years old. What should I do?
Irishka
O. Vitaly, please tell me what to do. The fact is that when my daughter was baptized (she was 2 months old), the godmother bought a cross for her in advance. But when we came to the christening itself, it turned out that she had forgotten to consecrate it. We bought a blessed cross from the church and baptized our daughter with it. After the christening, the godmother went into the church, blessed the cross she had bought and put it on my daughter’s neck. My daughter wore 2 crosses until she got home, and when we got home, I took off the gifted cross from the cross and put it away. And I still don’t take off my baptismal cross (my daughter is 1 year and 2 months old). Maybe I'm worrying for nothing? It's just that some people said a bunch of mean things about it. Thanks in advance for your answer!
Tatiana
O. Vitaly, tell me, can a woman in “uncleanness” read the Gospel? And how to pray for a sick child? At what age do children receive unction? Thank you.
Vitaly
Olya Pogrebnyak
No, traditionally, a husband and wife cannot be the children of the same child.

Has anyone baptized at home? Please tell us how everything happened - how technically everything happens from the very beginning
what do we need to do for this?
thank you :flower:
Baptism at home, as far as I know, is the same as Communion, Unction and other sacraments. It is possible in special cases. If there are good reasons for this. Otherwise, all sacraments are performed in the Temple. You can agree on a private Baptism so that only your child is baptized and there are no strangers. Well, or get baptized with a group of other people. Whichever is more convenient for you. In any case, you need to agree on your specific case with the priest. Each priest makes his own decision. I know that not every priest will go to a house to baptize without a reason.
If you baptize at home:
For a baby you need a bath (any vessel), warm water, a towel, a blessed cross on a string, baptismal robes if desired, wax candles. The priest has the rest.

My friend baptized her baby (he was one week old) in the hospital. She persuaded Father only because the little one was in intensive care. Father told her then that in general people come to people’s homes and hospitals to baptize only in very special cases, for example, if a child is very sick.

We baptized in the intensive care unit, combed the hair at home, we will baptize our second home (as it will be winter) as soon as we arrive from the maternity hospital. Father is a friend of ours, he didn’t take the money, but he didn’t refuse lunch
well, the ritual is the same as in church, only they didn’t bathe mine—they just anointed me and sprinkled him with holy water.
That's what we wanted too. But the priest said that he only cares about sick children.

baptized at home - the priest lives in our entrance. He didn’t take any money, he didn’t refuse to eat :)). You definitely need godparents, a bath of water, an icon (in general, he takes everything with him: blessed water, and an outfit, and candles, etc. and an icon too, but we have a praying icon at home, an antique one, I said it better) everything was done as it should be, with songs, very beautiful and decorous :)). but the next day my godmother and I still took the boy to church, the priest carried him for the altar (it looks like boys are needed, I don’t know about girls), wrote it down in the book, cleaned it up. They donated money to the church. If we went back in time, I would have baptized in the church, especially since it was summer.
I did everything as expected, with songs.

We baptized at home. We have a priest we know, and he told us what we needed to prepare, and he brought the rest with him. If you're interested, I'll tell you the details ;)
It’s just that then you will still need to carry the baby to communion; they usually don’t give communion at home. Although, I confess, I was baptized in May. but still haven’t taken my daughter to communion. But we have a special case
A candle goes out during a child's baptism - is that bad?
At your request, I will tell you about the christening. About your own and about those to which you were invited as a guest or godmother, godfather.
You are a godparent
If the christening is on Saturday, and you were announced about it less than a week in advance, then it looks strange, to say the least.
If your parents wanted you as a godmother/father, they would have said this when the baby was in mom’s tummy.
If this was not done ahead of time, then it is worth abandoning such a mission. The godmother must prepare for the christening process.
Be sure to buy toys for the child (little things, simple ones), a baptismal outfit or diapers. The godmother buys a silver teaspoon and keeps it on her chest during baptism. Then it is given to the goddaughter. The godfather must also prepare gifts.
Of course, both godparents must understand that the character of the goddaughter will be entirely on their conscience and they will be fully accounted for in the next world for the actions of the adopted child and will also be praised if he is an exemplary person. In general, as for your own child. You must love the little doll.
In addition, twins are not baptized on the same day. And you can be a mother for two. On this day, the godmother should not have her period, otherwise the child will die prematurely. And she shouldn't be pregnant either. Which will also affect the life of the goddaughter.
Mommy and daddy's godparents are required to take the child to communion at least once a year. It can be done weekly. They take care of moral books, biographies of saints - so that the child has them and can read them. You need to get into the spirit of mom/dad for this child. To feel him as your ward.
You can refuse this mission under any pretext, ranging from unpreparedness for the event morally, or unpreparedness for the event financially. God does not punish for this. He punishes careless godparents who do not have time to take their child to communion.
So you should agree to the role of godfather only if you really want to care for the child and raise him.
You are the natural parent of the person being baptized
On the day of christening, which ideally should coincide with the baby’s 40th day, they carefully look at the baby’s behavior.
In the morning they read prayers for themselves, family and child. There is no such thing as too many prayers. Sometimes they are poorly read. You need to read it carefully. Slowly. Addressing the person you are reading to. After prayers, they ask in their own words or in prayers for the child for happiness, abundance, intelligence, beauty. Summon his angel.
By this day, mommy (at least) and daddy should be baptized. The godparents who have been chosen must also already be baptized.
The mother should already have a set of such icons: Jesus Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Trinity, the child’s guardian angel.
On this day they do not swear, do not quarrel, do not start enmity.
It’s good when on this day they give you gifts or other profits happen in the house.
After the christening, the child, when brought into the house, is placed immediately on a fur coat or other fur, any in the house (you can put it on a fur coat, which is laid with the fur outward, so that the child can be placed directly on the fur) for the child’s wealth. One of the rugs (in the hallway, at least) should be new. Better, green. Rug, rug, carpet - equally good.
If the child cried a lot that day, or some kind of loss or trouble occurred, then it is better to immediately report these indicators, which indicate poor heredity or fate. You can do this yourself or you can contact us.
If a parent thinks that it is cold in the church and there is no need to baptize the child for these reasons, then it is better not to baptize at all. One must believe that everything will happen according to God’s intention for the good of the child.
So that they are not afraid, I can say that three of my sons are winter. And I baptized them all in the cold. Everyone remained alive and well. In terms of cold, this means that it is minus 20 degrees or higher outside.
You can choose, agree in advance whether the child will be completely immersed in the font or just the head will be wet. In any case, the water is usually made warm when babies are baptized.
In any case, take some flannel diapers with you for your baby. One will be on him, then you will take it off and put it on him. And the other is to wipe it off.
One more moment. I know for sure that each church has its own order of even reading the Easter service, not to mention baptizing and maintaining the church in general. Some in church immediately hoot and whoop at you (I have never heard this, but people say terrible things), others are very friendly.
You can always look for a church in your city or area that is most acceptable in terms of its staff, service, and manners.
You should also think about it, if you came across a church minister who scolded and cursed you (which is the case) just because you have not been to church for more than a year, then you should look for the origins of aggression in yourself first of all. That is why the church should also be chosen in advance. Which you have already known for a long time.
Sometimes you can agree to have only one of your children baptized, and sometimes to have them baptized at home.
If you were baptized at home, then the water is carefully poured into a place that is not a latrine, not into a toilet or into a sewer, but poured under a tree or bush, or watered with flowers.
You yourself decided to be baptized
If you decide to be baptized already, being an adult and independent, then first you should study at least one gospel. Learn the prayers Our Father, the Life-Giving Cross, the Hymn to the Most Holy Theotokos. And only then sign up for baptism.
Now you are responsible for yourself and can always change your life yourself.
There are a huge number of prayers for any occasion in life. But in any case, you can get by with just the Lord’s Prayer and read it always and for any need up to 108 times. That is, you can read it once. You can use 3, 7, 9, 12, 27, 49, 108.
How to choose icons in a shop? Very simple. You come and look - which one you glance at and pull towards you, we take that one. We take a prayer and an akathist to her.
After baptism, it is good to eat at a rich table and sit on a fur for wealth. They lay a fur coat or sheepskin coat right at the table, with the fur facing out, and sit down like that.
For all
On this day a feast is held. Everyone finishes their plates at the christening and the godparents don’t drink at all and don’t let others get drunk. Ideally, they give up alcohol altogether.
Remember that on the coming Sunday the baptized person must receive Holy Communion, otherwise the ceremony will be considered incomplete.
During baptism, they watch the candle and protect it. If it has gone out for you, then it is bad for the person being baptized and it is necessary to urgently contact a specialist to review and correct the person’s life and destiny. If another person’s candle goes out, they don’t let you light it from your own candle, but offer to light it from a lamp.
Keep an eye on the candle that is held for the person being baptized. Not only should it not go out, but it should not shoot, not smoke, and burn evenly.
Candles for these and other purposes are more expensive and better. Do not accept poor quality candles. The candle should smell like honey and honeycomb.
After baptism, they keep the candle for themselves for prayers. The clothes in which they were baptized are also put away. The baby's diaper is also hidden along with the candle.
Who knows what to do with the candles that are given away after a child’s baptism?
Do not schedule baptisms for:
— 11th, 13th, 19th, 29th
- month of May
- Saturday
- memorial day
- waning moon
After baptism, clergy are given candy, sausage (if not fasting), and some kind of cereal. You can give it to the priest who baptized it, you can put it on the funeral table, where all the food is put. Be sure to buy flour, Cahors and butter and put it all on the table with the thought: “For a new, happy, rich life (name of the person being baptized).” You can add something else according to your desire and wallet.
Clothes from baptism are not washed, but put away just like that, if they are not soiled.
Godparents should not be lovers of real parents.
Siblings cannot be godparents to their sister or brother.
After the christening, they receive communion on the next Sunday or at the festive liturgy.
Good luck!

- When to baptize?
- Most often baptism occurs around the 40th day. After the sacrament of Christening, the mother enters the Temple and a cleansing prayer is read over her.
If the child is weak, they try to baptize him as quickly as possible (sometimes both in the maternity hospital and in the hospital; in extreme cases, the baptized mother can do this), and the mother goes to church after the 40th day for a cleansing prayer.
4.12.2000 16:5:14, Katerina Kuzovkina - In my opinion, you can get baptized right away, but my mother didn’t have to go to church for the first 40 days after giving birth, for some reason it’s considered “dirty,” which is why godparents were needed...
10.8.2001 20:14:39, Nataly - There is no point in postponing this matter (I see absolutely no reason!), because the child does not yet have a guardian angel, and even for the mother it is much more difficult to pray for him...
10.8.2001 23:27:2, Inanna - It is best to baptize before 4 months. The older children were sobbing with all their might, a girl was sobbing for about a year, and a boy of 2-3 years old was crying as if in grief, he also managed to hit the priest when he went to smear him :-)
10.8.2001 20:9:14, Nataly - The eldest was baptized at 8 months. She already understood a lot and was screaming like crazy. The youngest was baptized at 3 months. Ideal age. And he already holds his head confidently, and there is still no fear of strangers.
11.8.2001 10:0:37, Julia - We baptized at 3-4 months. Just like everyone else, I advise you to do it in warm time of day. And just like others, I advise either before 4 months, or already after 3-4 years (or even 5).
10.8.2001 23:54:3, Tamara - (From the site "Russian Orthodoxy")
- this is the business of their parents, and it is they who decide when to baptize them. If, by their decision, the child remains unbaptized, and, God forbid, he dies, then the responsibility for his unbaptized soul will fall with all its unbearable burden on their souls as sin.
The traditions in ancient Christianity and in Russian Orthodoxy were different. In Rus', people were often baptized immediately upon birth, and at home - they were afraid of the death of the child, as this often happened. But, and this is the main thing, the time of baptism is not a dogma and there is no need to argue about this!
Priest Andrei Lorgus.
In the Apostolic Tradition there is an indication that children should be baptized before adults. Children of very young age were allowed to be baptized; parents or relatives could give answers when performing baptism. In the era of Cyprian of Carthage, it was considered possible not to postpone baptism even until the eighth day. Gregory of Nazianzus recommended postponing baptism until the age of three. From all of the above it is clear that the issue of age was perceived differently by different holy fathers. But, according to Tertulian, the question at what age to baptize children boiled down to the fact that the recipients could fall into temptation and not keep the vows given during the sacrament of baptism. r.b. Georgy.
3.12.2000 15:30:3, Katerina Kuzovkina - What is needed for baptism?
- You need baptismal clothes (a vest and a cap + a diaper), according to legend, if the baby, God forbid, gets sick, you will need to put them on and put them under the mattress of the crib.
12.7.2001 0:52:6, Nataly - My thoughts: not to baptize a newborn, so that he is definitely fed for an hour and a half, individually, without crowds of people. To be baptized in diapers, for obvious reasons, with a pacifier in his mouth. So that the church is warm, preferably in the summer.
11.7.2001 16:51:10, oh3harriette - The main thing is that the mask should be warm and not drafty in the church. For baptism, in addition to the usual baptismal set, you need to take with you a couple of diapers and a large towel. Diapers for an undressed baby to keep him warm.
16.4.2001 13:54:40, kuhan - Choose a church for baptism where mothers are allowed to be present (there are some where for some reason only godparents are allowed). It is advisable (if you are a believer) that you go to confession and receive communion the day before. Yes, and before that (usually during confession), the priest must read the prayer of the 40th day over you (which gives you the right to participate in the sacraments). Then, with a clear conscience, you can hold the baby in your arms almost the entire time the baptism lasts.
16.4.2001 0:47:48, Tamara - Godparents
- The godfather (receiver) is the one who accepted the child after baptism (immersion in the font), who made all the vows for him (the child himself is not able to do this for obvious reasons), who ensures that the child fulfills these vows in the future (i.e. Responsible for children's religious upbringing and education).
17.4.2001 3:34:34, Tamara - As Father told us, the godfather is responsible for the material, and the mother is responsible for the spiritual. And together they are obliged to replace their parents if anything happens.
1.8.2001 11:22:43, Inchik - Godparents can be close relatives of the child (this is even preferable). There can be one godfather, only the godfather must be of the same gender as the child, i.e. for a girl - godmother, for a boy - godfather.
1.8.2001 10:56:35, Helga - Godparents are considered the spiritual mentors of their godson, and the rite of baptism binds them with spiritual kinship. Therefore they should not be husband and wife.
22.5.2001 13:36:27, Magus - My father was the godfather of his sister’s daughter, and when I was baptized, I wanted my aunt (my father’s sister) to be the godmother, but it turns out that this is not possible;-(in the sense that if you baptized my children, then I can’t ...
1.8.2001 11:36:18, Izya - Godparents must be over 14 years old, we wanted to take her second cousin and cousin, both 10 years old, as godparents, it turned out to be too low :-)
10.8.2001 20:12:25, Nataly - Christenings at home
- Here is the phone number 162-03-47, Father Evgeniy - he baptizes at home.
1.8.2001 15:14:19, Lelka - It seems to me that the walls of the church also help, and we should try to baptize there.
1.8.2001 11:22:43, Inchik - A child is baptized at home if he is very sick and cannot be carried to church.
1.8.2001 10:56:35, Helga - We were baptized a year and a month at home. We bought candles and prepared clean towels. The godmother gave me a cross. Father said that it is better for the child to be all in white. That, in general, is all the preparations. First, Father told us about the patron saint after whom the child was named. Then there was the sacrament itself. And after the sacrament, Father explained what to do with the candles, with the water in the font, etc.
11.8.2001 1:40:38, AsyaA - Communion and wearing a cross
- Sorry for the wildness of the question: what and how do babies receive Holy Communion? And how does this fit with child hygiene issues? And yet, the godfather of our then 6-month-old child insisted on wearing a cross on his body, and our doubts regarding the fact that it wouldn’t take long to suffocate him answered that everything was in God’s will. For some reason this approach did not suit me.
11.7.2001 16:58:12, oh3harriette - As for wearing a cross, we don’t, especially since my husband’s grandmother is a terribly religious person and said that you just need to hang the cross on the crib.
12.7.2001 0:52:6, Nataly - Everything is done by faith. Here questions of hygiene are generally inappropriate.
We put the cross on and never took it off. Only it should be smooth so that it does not interfere or scratch. And the ribbon should be short, then the children won’t even notice it.
About communion, I can also add: they take communion only with a drop of wine, a little.
11.7.2001 17:11:2, Kris - From a spoon - only “blood”, without “body”.
After six months, when he crawls around the house and puts everything in his mouth, paranoia about hygiene in the sacramental area is simply inappropriate.
As for "strangling" - you need to choose the appropriate rope, there are those that will not choke in any way. “God’s will” is, of course, not the approach, because it says “do not tempt,” so, of course, there is no need to use a large rope. You need something thin so that if you pull too hard it will simply break. But you still need to wear it, if baptism is not a formality for you, of course.
11.7.2001 17:9:36, Glaurung - Should I baptize at all?
- Child baptism is justified only when the parents and/or recipient can provide the child with an adequate Christian upbringing. Before baptizing, ask what prayers are read at baptism and what vows are made. It’s one thing when an adult consciously takes on obligations and just as consciously fails to fulfill them. It’s a completely different matter when you essentially impose obligations on a child that he a priori cannot fulfill (if no one is going to raise him in the faith). The recipient makes vows for the baby, and your child will take full credit in the future.
16.4.2001 1:29:45, Tamara - The Bible says: baptism is nothing and circumcision is nothing. My son is still only 7 days old and he will definitely undergo baptism, but only when he understands what he is doing and what it is all for. And when he is 42 days old, this whole beautiful ritual makes absolutely no sense. It’s enough just to turn around and you will see a lot of drunks, drug addicts, homeless people, 80% of whom were dubbed by their parents in infancy.
23.5.2001 13:53:48, Roman - My personal opinion: a child should live to a certain age and decide for himself whether to be baptized or not. I will give my child the right to choose which religion to belong to.
22.5.2001 15:32:57, Veronika - From the moment of baptism, parents are RESPONSIBLE for raising the child and for instilling in him the moral standards that are accepted in this religion. So before you do anything, think about what is the PURPOSE of it? If the goal is a tribute to fashion or tradition, then it is better to postpone the ceremony until the time when the child himself is able to make this decision. If the goal is education within the framework of the chosen religion, then the parents themselves must be baptized.
22.5.2001 13:36:27, Magus
Discussion
I wanted to baptize my son after 40 days, as soon as possible. Purely for my peace of mind, because I Believe. At first the husband agreed, but then protested, like, let him grow up and decide for himself what faith he wants to belong to. In principle, he may be right. But you can change your faith at any age. In short, I will give away a free baptismal kit for a boy, new, up to 3 months. Shipping at your expense

We baptized our son at 7 months. I believe that after baptism he receives a guardian angel. My opinion is to baptize a child either under one year old or already an adult. and this should not be for show, but consciously, first of all, by the godparents. It is very difficult to realize that very rarely anyone understands the meaning of baptism.
Hello! Tell me, please, what should the godparents buy for the boy? Thank you in advance!
04.10.2008 11:24:40, YanaPlease tell me whether a married girl who has no children can baptize a boy. Please answer urgently
08/18/2008 14:40:15, Sergey EremenkoHello. Please tell me. They chose godparents for their son and baptized him. After 2 years, my godmother stopped communicating with us, she doesn’t even congratulate us on our birthday or other holidays. And the godfather turned out to be a man of bad spiritual qualities (I figured it out later). In general, I’m upset that my son has such bad godparents. And it’s especially upsetting that they themselves chose such people for him. Can anything be done (changed)? Now we need to baptize our second son, but we are already afraid to choose godparents, in case something changes again in the future. Give advice on what to do. Send your answer by e-mail. Thank you in advance.
11/14/2007 00:46:41, TatyanaPlease tell me, can an unmarried girl baptize a girl? YOU NEED TO FIND OUT VERY URGENTLY! SEND THE ANSWER TO SOAP! Thank you!:)
Please tell me, can an unmarried girl baptize a girl? I really NEED TO KNOW! BY THE WAY, THE GIRL IS A NIECE! SEND THE ANSWER TO THE SOAP! beg!
06.11.2006 13:06:01, Julia This is an extremely dangerous delusion, first of all, for your children. It is surprising that Orthodox priests do not know the Scriptures and offer you to baptize your children, citing the fact that the child may die unbaptized and will lose the opportunity to get into the Kingdom of Heaven. Let me explain my words. Get into the Kingdom of Heaven every person can who has repented of his sinful life and confessed Jesus Christ as Lord, as can be seen from the words of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 23.39-43). The following: no one can come to Christ unless the Heavenly Father calls him (John 6: 44) Based on what Jesus said, it does not depend on a person whether he will become a believer or not, but only on the Almighty - if in his plan this person is destined for salvation, then he will believe; but if this person is not destined for salvation in God’s plan, no vows of “godparents” will help him turn to God. I am a member of the Pentecostal Christian church. We have very large families, since abortion is strictly prohibited in our country, but to our deepest Unfortunately and even with grief, not all of our children become believers, but they live surrounded by informal Christians and see in us, their parents, an example of serving God, go to services with us and lead a pious lifestyle, but of my five children only two repented and This is the situation in many families. In addition, the so-called godparents, as a rule, have no idea about the Christian way of life and, at best, they come to their godchildren only on holidays to get drunk, which in no way brings these children closer to God. Further. Which Orthodox priest at least once in their life Have you read the entire bible? Believe me, there are very few of them. Otherwise, they would know what Baptism is. For all Christians, regardless of denomination, the only basis for teaching is the 66 books of the canonical Bible, which are inspired by God, or in other words, these books were written by the Holy Spirit through people. All the rest of the books were written only by people and are not inspired by God - this is recognized by all denominations, with the exception of Mormons. What does the Holy Spirit teach us regarding baptism? I quote: “So now baptism, like this image, does not wash away the uncleanness of the flesh, but the promise to God of a good conscience, saves us through the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1 Pet. 3:21); “Having been buried with Him in baptism, you were also raised again in Him through faith in the power of God, who raised Him from the dead” (Col. 2:12) Here are two quotes from the inspired canonical books. From the letter of Peter it is clear that the person being baptized during the sacrament of baptism promises God to have a good conscience. How and what can a baby promise? From the Epistle to the Colossians it is clear that in baptism we were resurrected BY FAITH in the power of God. Do you think an infant believes in the power of God? In other words, baptism in childhood is not baptism. As for the danger of dying unbaptized, Scripture says that God is a God of order. Suddenly nothing happens to God. And in order for everything to be fine with your children, I strongly advise you to come to Christ’s church, enter into a covenant with the Lord, begin to live a righteous life and pray for your children. And constantly study the word, pray and the Lord will definitely hear you: ". ..I am the Lord your God, a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me,
6 and showing mercy to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments. (Ex. 20:5-7) Ponder these Words of the Almighty. Turn and you will always be under the protection and blessing of God. It is a huge misconception when a person says “I believe in God in our own way." God teaches us how we must serve him in order to be pleasing to him. How often have you seen miracles in your life? Come to us and you will see them regularly. You will see how, through the prayer of the church, people with incurable diseases are healed, how alcoholics stop drinking and drug addicts stop injecting drugs. Through the prophetic brothers and sisters, the Lord will teach you, guide you on the true path, prevent dangers and much more, much more. I came specifically to the Pentecostals because they most correctly and completely fulfill what is written in Scripture. Come visit us. May the Almighty bless you and your children.
Please tell me, can an unmarried girl baptize a girl? And one more question. Can a couple who are dating, but are not yet married, and do not know whether they will get married, baptize one child, namely a girl? Thank you very much in advance. I will be very grateful for a quick response.
04/26/2005 13:36:52, OksanaIn general, I was surprised about when to baptize. If you are a believer, then there should be no questions at all! The sooner, the better! You can’t give communion to a child, order a prayer service in church (at least for health), or even light a candle !The sick and weakened can now be baptized even in a maternity hospital! And if you don’t need anything, you don’t go to church, then you leave the choice to the child’s years so...16,18,20...And who do you think is his will teach the Faith? Street? Don’t be surprised if suddenly it turns out to be some kind of sect! After all, in order to baptize you yourself must be believers, teach the child the Faith and pray for him and with him! And this should be only for the sake of God, and not for the sake of custom ,as everybody.
03/03/2005 14:35:58, NatashaWe, for example, have not yet been baptized (we are 10 months old). We are going to be baptized in the summer. And my friend says that it will be better if the child chooses his own faith when he grows up.
