Tractor T-40: technical characteristics, dimensions, fuel consumption
The technical characteristics of which are very good, it was produced once in the USSR. However, it still remains one of the most popular models among farmers and small entrepreneurs. This reliable wheeled model, well known to everyone, even people far from agriculture, is valued primarily for its reliability and versatility.
A bit of history
The T-40 tractor was produced in the Soviet Union, in the city of Lipetsk, from 1961 to 1995. At different times, various modifications of it rolled off the assembly line. From 1961 to 1972, two types of this tractor were produced: the T-40 itself with rear-wheel drive and the all-wheel drive T-40 A. In 1972, a new modification of this agricultural equipment, the T-40 M, saw the light. The technical characteristics of this tractor were slightly different. ... For example, he had more weight. In addition, for the T-40 M, the designers provided for the function of switching the driving axles.
Over the entire production period, more than a million of these tractors have been produced. Models of the T-40 brand were widely used on collective and state farm fields, as well as in municipal utilities.
Modifications
In addition to those described above, at different times the Lipetsk plant produced tractors:
- T-40 AP. Such tractors are intended for use in cities, in municipal services.
- T-40 AN. This model has a high ground clearance and is mainly used for working on slopes.
- T-40 AM. The technical characteristics of this model are almost the same as the base one. The difference lies in better cross-country ability. This tractor is a modification of the T-40 M with automatic engagement / disengagement of the front drive while driving and the engine is started with an electric starter.
Other modifications of the T-40 were produced, slightly differing in design from the base one and also having excellent performance characteristics.
Main advantages
The advantage of the T-40 models, the technical characteristics of which will be discussed in the article below, is, first of all, their versatility. By purchasing such a tractor, you can perform not only a large number of various agricultural operations: plowing, mowing, stacking, cultivating row crops, removing snow, etc. It is also allowed to use this model for transportation. All that is needed for this is to attach a cart to the T-40 tractor. In this case, it will be possible to transport hay, branches, garbage, etc.
These Soviet models have earned popularity among farmers, among other things, because they can be aggregated without re-equipment with hinged mechanisms designed for lighter equipment - T-25, and heavier - "Belarus". The advantages of the T-40 tractors are also referred to as:
- good cross-country ability and maneuverability;
- ease of repair and the ability to purchase any parts without problems;
- ease of management.
The advantages of this model are also considered not too reliable. T-40 tractors break down very rarely. The transmission and chassis assemblies of this model have a large margin of safety. This is what determines its long service life. The T-40 M tractor, which has excellent technical characteristics, and other modifications of the T-40 base model have the same wide range of advantages.
Disadvantages of the T-40
Farmers consider the main disadvantage of this model to be its noise. In this regard, it is, of course, impossible to compare it with modern tractors. Also, the disadvantages of the T-40 include a too small, uncomfortable cabin. In some cases, it is even simply covered with a tarp on top. There is heating in the T-40 cabin, but, according to the majority of owners of this equipment, it is insufficient. Of course, the tractor driver in it while working, and especially in very cold or hot weather, does not feel very comfortable. Some farmers consider the disadvantages of the T-40 models to be not very reliable brakes and not a particularly effective cooling system.
Design features
The T-40 tractor, whose technical characteristics are simply remarkable, turned out to be such a successful design that even today, 20 years after the discontinuation of production, it is successfully used for agricultural work. Its versatility, reliability and functionality are provided by the following design features:
- The rear wheels have a stiffer suspension and an increased diameter.
- If necessary, the ground clearance, as well as the track width of this model, can be changed.
- It is allowed to install other, narrower wheels on the tractor for work in the aisles.
- Rear wheels can be installed "inside out". This increases the stability of the tractor when working on slopes.
- The powerful engine allows you to carry out agricultural work of any complexity.
- The tractor has 2 power take-off shafts: side and rear. Each of them can operate both from a separate and from a synchronous drive.
- The gearbox has not a longitudinal, but a transverse position of the shafts. In this case, the gearbox is located directly behind the clutch.
- The steering is equipped with a hydraulic booster.
T-40 engine: technical characteristics
The T-40 is a pretty powerful yet fast model. These characteristics are primarily due to the fact that a reliable engine is used in its design. Previously, it was marked D-37 and had a capacity of 37 liters. with. Now this motor is produced by JSC VMTZ as D-144. One of two varieties can be installed on the T-40: 37 or 50 liters. with. Below are the characteristics of this engine.
The four-stroke T-40 engine runs on diesel fuel. He has air cooling. It is not difficult to distinguish a tractor with a D-37 engine from a model equipped with a D-144. The first has a rounded hood, the second has a rectangular one.
Technical characteristics of T-40
Thus, the T-40 is a functional and almost universal model. What specific characteristics this technique differs in can be found in the table.
As you can see, the T-40 tractor has excellent technical characteristics. It differs from other tractors of the Soviet era by the presence of a reversible transmission. This allows him to work in reverse, including when using various kinds of attachments. The entire speed range of the tractor can be used.
Dimensions (edit)
The T-40 tractor has dimensions of 3660 x 1620 x 2530 mm. The T-40 A modification is slightly longer than the base one (by almost 200 mm). At the same time, the all-wheel drive T-40 A weighs about 300 kg more than the T-40 - about 2.5 tons.
Fuel consumption
When performing various types of work, this indicator for the T-40 tractor, like any other equipment, may change. Of course, the D-144 engines also depend on their modification. You can calculate the amount of diesel fuel used using the following formula:
- P = 0.7 x R x N, where R - N - 0.7 is the coefficient of its conversion from kW to hp. with.
In any case, in this regard, the T-40 has good technical characteristics. The fuel consumption of the base model in Soviet times was only 7.2 kg / h. However, when performing work of different specialization, it could also increase or decrease.
