Do they accept gays into the army, what does the military registration and enlistment office think about it? Can a gay man escape the army? Are gays drafted into the army?
Many people are convinced that people with non-traditional sexual orientations are not accepted into the army. In fact, only sick people are not subject to conscription, and homosexuals are currently not one of them. Therefore, a conscript’s mere statement that he is gay is not enough to be exempt from military service.
Can homosexuals serve in the army?
In Russia, the transition of diagnostics to the standards of the World Health Organization occurred in 1999. According to WHO rules, diagnoses must be made based on the current version of the ICD. This is currently the tenth revision of the International Classification of Diseases. In it, homosexuality is not indicated as a disease or disorder, which means that a diagnosis is impossible. Consequently, it is impossible to correlate the conscript’s condition with the article in the Schedule of diseases, the presence of which exempts him from military service.
However, it’s not so simple... Two factors need to be taken into account.
- The modern Russian army does not have a very great need for conscript soldiers and sergeants. It is usually lower than the number of conscripts. This means that no one puts serious pressure on the draft commission, and doctors simply look at the possibility of commissioning someone who has reached military age. There would be good reasons for this.
- Homosexuals are different. Some people simply dress up as women, while others suffer greatly from the fact of their attraction to members of their own sex.
All this is important for making a diagnosis. Of course, not “homosexuality”, there is simply no such thing, but one of the types of personality and behavior disorders in adulthood, namely, a disorder of sexual preference. This is already a section of the ICD, which falls into the Schedule of diseases exempt from conscription.
What diagnoses will prevent you from being drafted into the army?
What should happen to a person so that he does not end up in military service?
Fetishism
Excessive passion for the subject area of sex, to the point of obtaining sexual arousal from the sight of women's panties or underwear. So strong that those suffering from fetishism can get sexual satisfaction from just contemplating the object of their desire.
Fetishistic transvestism
Patients create a kind of “cult” of the image of the opposite sex in themselves. They not only strive to become a person of the opposite sex, but surround this with delusional ideas. They turn the other sex itself, its possible presence in itself, into a super-idea.
Exhibitionism
Many people know stories about hooligans who run up to ladies on the streets and open their coats, but there is nothing underneath. This is exhibitionism. He didn’t just sunbathe once on a nudist beach, but committed some acts that clearly went beyond the boundaries of generally accepted morality.
Voyeurism
The urge to spy on how someone undresses, performs sexual intercourse, or relieves natural needs. To make a diagnosis, it is necessary that voyeurism be more important for a person than direct sexual contact.
Pedophilia
It is unlikely that anyone needs to explain that this is a criminally punishable attraction to persons who have not reached the age of majority. True, from the point of view of psychiatry, the matter may not come to contact. For example, if a patient can become aroused only at the sight of photo or video materials with naked boys, then this is already a serious basis for making a diagnosis.
Sadomasochism
It is getting sexual pleasure from inflicting pain and other suffering on someone else or oneself. Distributed in the world under the guise of BDSM communities. Russia is no exception. There are a lot of thematic sites.
Passing a medical examination
In all cases, diagnoses are made based on the criteria specified in the ICD. They practically eliminate the appearance of symptoms of disorders an hour before the draft board.
What will happen to a young man if, during an examination, he tells a psychiatrist or neurologist that he is gay and has a tendency to dress in women's clothes, and then wave whips and peep at his neighbors through the keyhole? During his work at the military registration and enlistment office, a psychiatrist has no right to make any diagnoses. If he suspects that a person is suffering from some kind of disorder, the specialist will send him for examination to a psychiatric clinical hospital at his place of residence. This process is called a military psychiatric examination, and can last from three days to a month. Nowadays, they try to do everything as quickly as possible, since funding for specialized medical institutions has been significantly cut.
During the examination, commission members will meet with the conscript many times and ask a variety of questions - to him and his parents. The life history is examined, the degree of influence of the disorder on the quality of a person’s existence and the presence of other possible disorders is established. Thus, the young man’s statements that he is gay may not be associated at all with his desire to “refuse” from the army, but may be a consequence of his obsessive-compulsive disorder or schizophrenia. Here, it is not the diagnosis itself that plays an important role, but the individual characteristics of the symptom complex.
For example, one OCD patient simply sometimes has thoughts that he has germs on his hands and rushes to wash them. Another is so afraid of being gay that he no longer distinguishes whether he is gay or an ordinary person. The suffering can be so intense that the patient constantly teeters on the verge of suicide. All this is clarified during the examination, and its conclusion becomes the basis for exemption from military service. Of course, if there are good reasons for this.
Bottom line
If you are not a homosexual, then you should not try to get a commission under this article at the military registration and enlistment office, since most likely you will not succeed. A subsequent medical examination will prove who you really are. If the diagnosis is confirmed, then in the future it can greatly spoil life. So, if you have real mental disorders, it is better to join the army.
Making a diagnosis entails a number of social restrictions. In this case, it may be impossible to get a job in a number of professions related to education and some similar ones. In addition, the security services of a number of companies send inquiries about whether an applicant for a particular vacancy is under outpatient observation. If the PND confirms this, then they are not hired, since the labor market allows this; there are always more people who want to get a job than there are jobs. All this must be kept in mind by those who are trying to get exemption from the army with the help of psychiatry.
Often, citizens, in order to avoid being sent to military service, are able to act out their inclination towards homosexuality in front of the draft board. Are men of non-traditional sexual orientation, or simply gays, enlisted in the army?
According to psychiatric indicators, if they are confirmed, homosexuals are not conscripted. But a psychiatrist’s conclusion can interfere with normal life in society, given that the diagnosis was provoked.
Are they conscripted into the army?
The list of illnesses does not have any provisions regarding refusal to enlist if a young man is homosexual. However, practice shows that “blues” are not called up. An exception may be the case when a person has hidden his sexual orientation. Such silence will not be illegal.
The decision of the psychologist who is part of the military medical commission is key. To determine suitability, a specialist conducts psychological tests. Then the conscript is sent to a psychoneurological clinic for further examination and diagnosis. If a deviation is confirmed here, the citizen is released from service.
Refusal to enlist is expected for young people with other gender identity disorders. These include:
- transsexuals – those who do not recognize their gender. They try to change their gender through surgery. Transsexuals are similar in appearance to the opposite sex and strive to match it in clothing, behavior, etc.;
- Transvestites try to resemble the opposite sex in behavior and appearance. At the same time, they perceive their gender positively and do not seek to change it.
Conscripts with deviations from traditional sexual orientation are released from service only after a clinical examination. If the pathology is confirmed, then the young man is issued a military ID with fitness category D or B.
Sexual disorders that prevent you from joining the army?
Regular observation at a psychoneurological dispensary for any distorted sexual desire allows you to avoid joining the ranks of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The fact is that these deviations are difficult to determine during a one-time examination. Without long-term observation by a psychiatrist, release in this case is impossible.
These pathologies include:
- pedophilia;
- sadomasochism;
- exhibitionism;
- fetishism;
- voyeurism;
- fetish transvestism.
If a citizen has provided the draft commission with documents confirming that he is registered at a mental health clinic, then the medical examination will take place according to the Schedule of Diseases in accordance with Art. 18. The draft commission, after consulting, will assign one of the possible non-conscription fitness categories in this case - B or D.

If non-traditional sexual orientation is not accompanied by other mental disorders, then the gay man is called up for military service. The legislation speaks directly about this. Many refer to Article 18 of the “Schedule of Diseases,” but it does not contain a direct recommendation to protect homosexuals from conscription into the army. Let's look in more detail at whether gays are accepted for military service and in which troops.
How does the medical examination take place?
Thanks to domestic television series, most conscripts have the wrong impression about ways to avoid the army. Many people believe that just declaring oneself as gay is enough to get a white ticket. However, this will not help when passing the commission, just like a purchased certificate indicating homosexuality.
In the understanding of most domestic doctors, homosexuality does not exist as a diagnosis, which means that non-traditional orientation cannot become a reason for refusal to serve in the army. Conscripts cannot be commissioned with her. This is confirmed not only by employees of Russian military registration and enlistment offices, but also by lawyers.
If you declare your orientation to the commission, then this only threatens to undergo additional consultation with a psychiatrist at the dispensary.
During the examination by a specialist, the presence of concomitant diseases and pathologies is determined. If they exist, then a homosexual may be exempt from conscription.
In what cases are gays not drafted?
In Soviet times the situation was different. If, during the commission, a conscript was discovered to have a non-traditional sexual orientation, according to an unspoken rule, one of the types of psychopathic disorder was entered into his card. Now psychologists and psychiatrists conduct a conversation and refer you for additional consultation to a dispensary. The latter measure is resorted to infrequently; in recent years, at many recruiting stations, they only conduct a conversation with future military personnel, during which they try to find out whether the young man has any accompanying deviations.
They are not drafted into the army if a gay man has other problems of a sexual nature:
- fetishism;
- exhibitionism;
- transvestism;
- voyeurism;
- pedophilia;
- sadomasochism.
If during the conversation a tendency toward these disorders was discovered, the conscript is necessarily sent to a dispensary. Based on the diagnosis of the medical institution, he may be discharged. The same applies to other personality disorders. A quarter of gays are diagnosed with other psychiatric problems during examinations. If there are concomitant diseases, the young man may be offered inpatient or outpatient treatment.
Many try to avoid conscription by declaring their gay orientation. If the medical workers of the military registration and enlistment office did not recognize the deception, then there is no point in continuing to try to play the mentally ill person at the dispensary. In the best case, the absence of problems will be revealed, and in the worst case, you can end up in treatment and acquire problems in the form of the inability to drive vehicles and find employment in profitable positions. Remember that it will be very difficult to get rid of a psychiatric diagnosis. This takes years.
What is military service like?
In 2013, a manual was published for officers, which was supposed to help them identify and conduct educational work with gays. The brochure “How to Detect a Gay in the Army,” which is still in use among officers to this day, describes in detail the methodology for determining the true sexual orientation of soldiers. The appearance of this manual can be associated with the fact that the unspoken law adopted in Soviet times is no longer relevant today. Many representatives of public organizations condemned the methods presented in the manual, since the determination of orientation is often associated with psychological pressure on the soldier.
Conscripts who immediately declared their gay orientation are most often sent to serve in unpopular branches of the military, for example, in construction battalions. It cannot be said that their service is going smoothly. The media often highlight conflict situations that arise for various reasons; sometimes it becomes clear that the claims of senior employees are related to the fact that their colleague is gay. Often aggression even manifests itself through physical violence.
Throughout the entire year of service, the commanding staff tries to do everything to ensure that the soldier renounces his beliefs. “Re-education” is another integral component of gay service. Based on all of the above, it is better for young men with non-traditional orientation to try to avoid service or hide their sexual preferences, although this can be extremely difficult. You should not think that the situation changes after the expiration of the term of service for those who were called up earlier. As a rule, young people from the same conscription also treat gays poorly.

The topic, one might say, takes on...I don’t even know what organ to name here. Decide for yourself. In the recent past there was a joke going around:
Why aren't women taken into the army? - Because they misunderstand the command to lie down.
But there is no joke yet about why gays are not taken into the army. There are only rough versions. So I believe that gays are not taken into the army because when the command “Be equal! At attention!” You are supposed to stand so that you can see the chest of the fourth person. Well, these guys, as you know, strive to be equal in..., in the sense of the lower back.
And now the version from the American general.
Retired US general John Sheehan, a senior NATO official during the Balkan wars, caused an uproar in the Netherlands by claiming that the 1995 massacre in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica was caused by gay Dutch soldiers.
Speaking at a Senate hearing on whether to allow homosexuals to serve openly in the US military, General Sheehan cited the Srebrenica tragedy as an example as an opponent. The city was declared a safe zone under the auspices of the UN. However, Bosnian Serb troops managed to capture it and killed about 8 thousand Muslim men and boys who lived there.
According to the general, the Dutch contingent responsible for the defense of the city failed to cope with the task due to the weak fortitude and low morale of gay soldiers. According to him, the former chief of staff of the Dutch army himself told him that “part of the problem” that contributed to the fall of Srebrenica was the presence of gay soldiers among Dutch peacekeepers, the BBC reports.
The general also suggested that since the end of the Cold War, European armies have changed, deciding that there is no longer a need for active combat readiness. The “socialization” of this process, according to Sheehan, “included open homosexuality” and led to “a focus on peacekeeping operations because they did not believe in new German or Soviet aggression.”
The Dutch Ministry of Defense reacted harshly to these statements, which they called “complete nonsense.” “It is amazing that a person of this level can present such complete nonsense,” said department spokesman Roger van de Wetering.
"The Srebrenica massacre and the involvement of UN soldiers have been thoroughly investigated by the Netherlands, international organizations and the United Nations. And no one has in any way concluded that the sexual orientation of the soldiers played any role," he stressed.
In turn, the Dutch Ambassador to the United States, Renee Jonez-Bos, released her own statement on the embassy website, saying that she “could not agree more” with the general’s words.
“I am proud that gays have been serving openly and valiantly in Dutch forces for decades, as they are now doing in Afghanistan,” she said. “No national or international report on the events in Srebrenica has made any attempt to link this tragedy with the presence of homosexual soldiers."
Meanwhile, in the US Senate itself, John Sheehan’s words were received without approval. Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin told the general he had "completely missed the mark."
Today, openly gay men are allowed to serve in the militaries of several countries, including Australia, Great Britain, Israel and Canada.
Comments:
Do they take gays into the army? After all, few people want to serve now. Wanting to get rid of military service, conscripts are ready not to disdain any means. Or maybe, on the contrary, sexual orientation will be the reason that a man will be left with a “white” ticket in his hands, and this, in turn, will not have a very good effect on his professional achievements.
In our time, people are distrustful of serving in the country's Armed Forces. Young people, fearing the harsh rules and discipline prevailing in the army, try to evade it. Most often, various chronic diseases and pathologies cause unfitness for military service. No one has any doubts regarding physical ailments. But what should gay people do? After all, among such people there are those for whom service in the Armed Forces of the country is a matter of honor, a prerequisite for the formation of character. Will sexual orientation make a young man unfit for service?
Reasons why a homosexual will not be accepted into the army
The regulation on military medical examination, which determines the procedure for medical examination of persons conscripted into the ranks of the armed forces of our country, as well as the list of diseases incompatible with military service, does not provide for homosexuality as a reason for which a young man can be declared unfit for service in the ranks of the country's army. Thus, sexual orientation will not affect in any way the commission for military service.
However, there are some nuances here too. Homosexuality is not a disease, but, according to many domestic experts, it often has accompanying mental disorders or personality disorders.
In Soviet times, according to an unspoken law, gays were diagnosed with one of the types of psychopathy and were not taken into the army. Now, if a conscript declares that he is gay, he will have a conversation with a psychologist or, if necessary, a psychiatrist. The latter, if any abnormalities are detected, can issue a referral to a psychoneurological dispensary. There, the young man will undergo a repeated and more in-depth examination, and, if necessary, registration with treatment.
The reason why a homosexual will not be accepted into the army may be disorders of sexual preference.
Among others, these include voyeurism (the tendency to watch people having sex or undressing), sadomasochism, pedophilia, fetishism (dressing in women's clothing to obtain sexual arousal), transvestism, exhibitionism (unexpectedly showing the genitals to complete strangers for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification ). Such people are not accepted into the army.
