The number of participants in the Unified State Exam in Physics in 2018 (main day) was 150,650 people, including 99.1% of current year graduates. The number of exam participants is comparable to the previous year (155,281 people), but lower than the number in 2016 (167,472 people). In percentage terms, the number of participants in the Unified State Exam in physics amounted to 23% of the total number of graduates, which is slightly lower than last year. A slight decrease in the number of students taking the Unified State Exam in physics may be due to the increase in universities accepting computer science as an entrance test.
The largest number of Unified State Examination participants in physics is noted in Moscow (10,668), Moscow region (6546), St. Petersburg (5652), the Republic of Bashkortostan (5271) and Krasnodar Territory (5060).
The average USE score in physics in 2018 was 53.22, which is comparable to last year’s figure (53.16 test points). The maximum test score was scored by 269 exam participants from 44 constituent entities of the Russian Federation; in the previous year, there were 278 people with 100 points. The minimum Unified State Exam score in physics in 2018, as in 2017, was 36 tb, but in the primary scores this amounted to 11 points, compared to 9 primary scores in the previous year. The share of exam participants who did not exceed the minimum score in 2018 was 5.9%, which is slightly higher than those who did not reach the minimum limit in 2017 (3.79%).
Compared to the two previous years, the proportion of poorly prepared participants increased slightly (21-40 thousand). The share of high-scorers (61-100 thousand points) increased, reaching the maximum values in three years. This allows us to talk about increased differentiation in the training of graduates and an increase in the quality of training of students studying a specialized course in physics.
In 2018, the percentage of exam participants who scored 81-100 points was 5.61%, which is higher than in 2017 (4.94%). For the Unified State Exam in Physics, the range from 61 to 100 test points is significant, which demonstrates the readiness of graduates to successfully continue their education at universities. This year this group of graduates has increased compared to the previous year and amounted to 24.22%.

Every graduate understands perfectly well that in order to successfully enter the specialty of interest, it is necessary to thoroughly prepare for the Unified State Exam 2018 and score the maximum possible points. What does it mean to “pass the exam well” and how many points will be enough to compete for a budget place in a particular university? This will be discussed in this article.
We will cover the following important questions:
First of all, it is important to understand that there is:
- the minimum score giving the right to receive a certificate;
- the minimum score that allows you to apply to a university;
- the minimum score sufficient for actual admission to the budget in a specific specialty at a certain university in Russia.
Naturally, these figures differ significantly.
Minimum certification score
The minimum USE certification scores are established for compulsory subjects - Russian language and basic level mathematics and in 2018 are:
Having passed this threshold, but not reaching the minimum test score, the examinee will receive a certificate, but will not be able to submit documents to the university.
Minimum test score
The test minimum is a threshold value that gives the right to enter a university. In other words, persons who have passed the test threshold theoretically have the right to compete for budget places. Although, in practice, it is almost impossible to enter highly ranked universities with minimal indicators.
In 2018, in all subjects except Russian language and basic mathematics, the minimum Unified State Exam test scores coincide with the certification scores and are:
Item | Minimum test score |
Russian language | |
Mathematics (basic level)
Mathematics (profile level)
Social science | |
Literature | |
Foreign language | |
Biology | |
Computer science | |
Geography |
The principle of calculating success in passing the unified state exam assumes that the test taker must demonstrate a high, average or sufficient level of knowledge, corresponding to grades “5”, “4” and “3” on the school scale.
In case of an unsatisfactory result, as well as when passing with a score that the examinee considers insufficient for himself, graduates are given the right to retake the Unified State Exam.
Minimum score for admission to the budget
Most universities announce the threshold score required for applicants for a budget place. This allows each applicant to realistically assess the prospects for admission and choose universities and specialties taking into account the points scored on the Unified State Exam.
In 2018, we can be guided by the fact that last season the average passing scores in all Unified State Exam subjects among applicants admitted to MGIMO and other highly ranked universities in the capital fluctuated between the threshold value of 80-90. But, for most regional universities in the Russian Federation, 65-75 points can be considered a competitive result.
Converting the primary score to the resulting score
By completing the tasks proposed in the Unified State Examination ticket, the examinee gains so-called primary points, the maximum value of which varies depending on the subject. When assessing the level of knowledge, such primary scores are converted into final scores, which are entered into the certificate and are the basis for admission.
Using an online calculator, you can compare primary and test scores in subjects of interest.
Just like last year, in 2018 the points scored while passing the Unified State Exam influence the certificate score and, although the official table for comparing test scores and traditional assessments has not been adopted, you can roughly compare your scores right now using a universal calculator.

Please note that the average passing scores for different specialties at the same university may vary significantly. This figure reflects the minimum score of applicants admitted to the budget, and tends to change every year. The results of 2017 can only serve as a kind of guideline for applicants in 2018, motivating them to achieve the highest possible results.
The minimum passing score is influenced by many factors, including:
- the total number of graduates who applied and the scores shown on their certificates;
- the number of applicants who provided original documents;
- number of beneficiaries.
So, seeing your name in 20th place in the list of a specialty that provides 40 budget places, you can confidently consider yourself a student. But, even if you find yourself on this list of 45, there is no reason to be upset if among those standing in front of you there are 5-10 people who provided copies of documents, because most likely these people are set on another university and submitted documents for this specialty as a backup option .
Since 2001, many schoolchildren have become familiar with a new type of exam - the Unified State Examination (USE), despite the fact that its introduction into the school education system occurred smoothly, they did not become less afraid of it. Future graduates are interested in questions about the number of upcoming exams, but also about the scores they should receive.
Unified State Examination scores
There are three types of minimum points that students can receive based on the results of passing the Unified State Exam:
- The first type gives the right to receive a certificate;
- The second makes it possible to submit documents to higher educational institutions in the country;
- The third is sufficient for admission on a budgetary basis in a specific specialty at a specific university in the country.
It is not surprising that for many students, the Unified State Exam has become a rather strong emotional test; in fact, you shouldn’t stress yourself out too much before taking the exams, you need to prepare well and be confident in yourself. Despite all the rigor of the procedure, this is just an exam that can be retaken in case of failure. With proper training and approach, passing the Unified State Exam is not so difficult.
The Unified State Exam forms contain various tasks; they must be completed within a certain time; as they complete them, the student receives primary points; each subject has its own maximum values. When checking the level of knowledge, the primary scores are converted into final scores and they are entered into the certificate; they are the main ones for admission to a university.
Planned passing scores in 2018
There is still time before the exam, and many who wish can familiarize themselves with the passing scores in 2018, not only to know them, but also to be able to prepare for the Unified State Exam in advance.

Many universities announce in advance the score required for admission to a budget place, this allows you to realistically assess your chances of getting into your chosen educational institution, as well as select the most suitable options. In 2018, no major changes are expected when passing the Unified State Exam and entering a university; students can rely on the data from the previous year, so in 2017 for educational institutions in the capital the passing score was 80 - 90; for other cities the requirements are not so high and vary between 65 - 75 points.
Will there be changes in 2018?
At first glance, there is simply nothing to change in the education system, however, the level of education in our country is getting lower and lower every year, it is reasonable to conclude that it is time to change everything. It’s hard for everyone: students, their parents, and of course, teachers. The requirements are getting higher and higher every year; for many, the exam is stressful; some cannot cope with such pressure.
Today, mathematics and Russian are compulsory subjects, with plans to add more in 2018. Since 2009, compulsory exams have been held in subjects that are not only graduation from school, but also entrance to universities in our country. It is not surprising that there are plans to introduce history as another compulsory subject. It is planned to implement the plan in 2018 or 2019; in any case, the data will either be confirmed or refuted very soon.
Attitude to the Unified State Exam
Since 2001, the attitude towards the Unified State Exam is still relevant, some oppose its implementation, others defend it as progress in the education system, and there are those who do not emphasize it, continuing to study and teach.

How are the Unified State Exam results assessed?
The Unified State Exam results are assessed on a 100-point scale and included in a special “Certificate of Unified State Examination Results.”
When assessing the results of the Unified State Exam, a minimum number of test points is established for each educational subject, confirming that the graduate has mastered the basic general education programs of secondary (complete) education in accordance with the requirements of the federal educational standard of secondary (complete) general education. If a student scores less than the established minimum number of points (has not overcome the minimum threshold), then the Unified State Examination is considered failed.
The value of the minimum threshold is announced within 6-8 days after the Unified State Examination in the subject in the main terms and 2-3 days after the Unified State Examination in additional terms in July.
Unified State Examination scale
When you complete tasks on the Unified State Exam, 1 or more points are awarded for each correct solution, depending on the difficulty. In this case, correctly completed task of part A or B is scored 1 point, part C - up to 4 points. The sum of these scores is called the “primary score” (PS). In fact, this is the number of correctly completed tasks.
- The number of minimum PBs for different subjects may vary, for example:
- mathematics: 36 PB,
- biology: 36 PB,
- foreign languages: 22 PB.
But these are not the scores that will be useful to you, for example, for admission to a university. They need to be converted on a 100-point scale. This is the so-called “test score” (TB).
TB assesses the student’s level of preparedness. It depends on the level of complexity of the tasks completed on the Unified State Exam. This score is used to determine the final grade. The maximum test score on the Unified State Exam in any subject: 100 points.
The primary score is converted into a test score using a special formula.

How the Unified State Exam affects obtaining a certificate
The basis for issuing a graduate with a certificate of secondary education is satisfactory results of the Unified State Examination, i.e. the number of points is not lower than the minimum threshold in compulsory subjects (Russian language and mathematics). In this case, the graduate receives 2 documents: a school certificate and a certificate of Unified State Examination results.
The final grades are included in the certificate according to the traditional 5-point system, which are defined as the arithmetic average of the graduate’s annual grades for grades 10-11 (12).
The results of the Unified State Exam do not affect the final grades included in the certificate.
If a graduate has not passed the minimum threshold in one of the subjects - Russian language or mathematics - on the Unified State Exam within the main deadlines and during the retake, then he will not be issued a certificate.
How and when can you find out your Unified State Exam results?
The results of the Unified State Exam must be known to participants no later than 3 working days after Rosobrnadzor announces the minimum thresholds for each subject. Thus, no more than 12 days pass from the date of the exam. Most regions inform their Unified State Exam participants at an earlier date.
Unified State Exam participants who are graduates of the current year are issued certificates of Unified State Exam results at the educational institution. The rest of the Unified State Exam participants will find out their results where they received their Unified State Exam pass: this is either the PPE in which they took the exam, or the education governing body of the constituent entity of the Russian Federation, local educational authorities.
According to current regulations, each subject of the Russian Federation is independently responsible for informing Unified State Exam participants about the results. In some regions this information can be accessed online for free. You can find out your results by having an individual code (passport number, etc.).
- Moscow and Moscow region: www.rcoi.net
- St. Petersburg and Leningrad region: ege.spb.ru
Lists of Unified State Exam participants with their exam results are posted on information stands (at school, PPE, education management body, etc.).
