Victory Day or May 9 is a celebration of the victory of the Soviet army over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
First day of victory
The first Victory Day in history was celebrated by the Soviet people on May 9, 1945. On the occasion of the celebration, a Victory Salute was organized in Moscow - 30 victorious salvoes fired from thousands of anti-aircraft guns. There was no military parade that day, which, however, is not surprising. It took place on Red Square only a month and a half later - on June 24, and this entire period of time was spent on the necessary preparations.
The photo shows the first victory day in history - May 9, 1945. Neither the people nor the current government had time to prepare for the holiday, but that didn’t matter at all! The Soviet people were happy because the most long-awaited day had arrived - the day of the end of the Great Patriotic War.
Brief history of the holiday
The day after the death of A. Hitler, May 1, 1945, the German command decided to negotiate a truce with the USSR, but I. Stalin stated that he would only be satisfied with unconditional surrender. There was no response from Germany, after which the Soviet army dealt a crushing blow to Berlin. On the morning of May 2, Berlin was captured by Soviet soldiers, but the hostilities did not end there: German troops resisted for several more days.
The act of unconditional surrender was signed on the night of May 9, and in the morning a Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR was issued declaring May 9 the Victory Day and an official holiday.

May 9 in the USSR
The photo shows a military parade in honor of Victory Day on Red Square during the Soviet era.
After the end of the Second World War, Victory Day or May 9 from 1945 to 1948 was an official holiday and a non-working day, but later the day off was canceled. Only 20 years after the victory, when Brezhnev came to power, the May 9 holiday again became a day off.
How Victory Day is celebrated in modern Russia
The photo shows a military parade on Red Square after the collapse of the USSR.
After the collapse of the USSR, the first military parade on Red Square took place in 1995 in honor of the anniversary of the Victory, after which the festive procession became an annual event. Since 2008, the parade has been held with the participation of military equipment.

Victory Day traditions
The photo shows fireworks on Red Square in honor of Victory Day (May 9).
The main traditions of Victory Day include:
- Laying flowers at the monument to war heroes or the unknown soldier;
- A minute of silence in memory of the fallen soldiers;
- A festive parade that is held in all major cities;
- Festive fireworks in the evening, usually at 22 o'clock.
St. George Ribbon
The picture shows the St. George ribbon.
A new attribute of Victory Day is the St. George Ribbon, made of two colors: orange and black. It is believed that black symbolizes gunpowder, and orange symbolizes fire, but the ribbon itself is not directly related to the Second World War.
The history of the ribbon takes us back to the reign of Empress Catherine II, who established the soldier's Order of St. George the Victorious, and with it the St. George's Ribbon in 1769 during the Russian-Turkish War. The ribbon was complemented by the motto: “For service and courage” and it was awarded to the most courageous and loyal soldiers of the Russian Empire as an encouragement. The ribbon was not just a symbol - it was accompanied by lifelong payments to the owner, after whose death the ribbon was inherited. It could be confiscated from the owner in the most exceptional cases, for example, in case of a gross violation of the law.
This combination of colors became a symbol of courage and courage, and therefore was widely used in the design of military orders and awards after the end of the empress’s reign.
Since 2005, St. George ribbons have been distributed free of charge in public places to everyone who wants to honor the memory of fallen soldiers and express admiration for the courage of veterans of the Great Patriotic War.
History of the St. George Ribbon
SHOIGU CROSSED AGAIN
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who hosted the Parade, drove to Red Square from the Kremlin in an open ZiL limousine (made specifically for such special occasions). Shoigu asked to stop the car at the exit through the gates of the Spasskaya Tower, took off his cap and crossed himself.
This happened for the second time. In the same way, the minister crossed himself before the start of the anniversary Victory Parade in 2015.
SWEAT POURED BUCKETS FROM THE MECHANICS
No less worried than Shoigu was that the Parade would go smoothly, was the head of the entire mechanized column that was supposed to pass through Red Square, General Popov. An hour before the start, he not only crossed himself, but, as it seemed to us, crossed the entire line of tanks and rocket launchers.
In 35 years of service, I have not experienced as much as I did in preparation for the Parade,” the general admitted to the KP observer. “The engine speed drops a little and my heart stops.” And you can squeeze buckets of sweat out of mechanics and drivers...
In the end, by the way, the equipment at the Parade went like clockwork!
VETERANS STANDED UP, WELCOME GIRLS AND T-34
There were especially many veterans in the guest stands of the Parade this time. And when a column of female cadets in snow-white uniforms walked across Red Square for the first time in the history of Victory Parades, the veterans stood up in a single impulse! After all, they are still real officers and men!
For the second time, the veterans on the podium stood up when the legendary Great Patriotic T-34 tank drove across the square.
And when the Parade ended and the veterans were the first to leave the stands, leaning on their canes and the shoulders of the cadets, all the other guests stood up and saw them off with long applause.
THE SOLDIERS SMILED WIDELY FOR THE FIRST TIME
This actually happened for the first time at the Parade. Usually the military walked along Red Square with a stern and stern expression on their faces. This time everyone noticed that the soldiers and officers were smiling widely. Not just one or two in the ranks, but almost all of them!
And especially fervently, with the shine of the May sun on their teeth, the columns of landing forces and special forces marched. Experts immediately started saying that this is a continuation of building a new style of the Russian army. Its new face is now an army of polite people. Not gloomy, but friendly. And the world should not be afraid of these brave guys, but smile back at them.
THERE WERE TV CAMERAS EVEN IN THE PAVEMENTS AND ON THE BARREL OF TANKS
Many were surprised when they watched the Parade on TV, with footage from tank guns and from under the feet of marching columns. It seemed as if the soldiers' boots and boots were printing their steps directly across the screen. In fact, the television crew simply repeated last year's trick - from the Parade in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Victory. Several television cameras transmitting live broadcasts wirelessly were pre-embedded into the paving stones of Red Square and secured to the ends of tank barrels.
WHY NAZARBAYEV CAME BUT LUKASHENKO NOT
One of the guests of honor at the 2016 Victory Parade was the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. He sat on the podium next to Vladimir Putin. And together with him, he thanked the generals who led the parade columns, shaking their hands.
Many asked the question: why then was Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus, which together with Russia makes up the Union State, not at the Parade in Moscow? The fact is that Lukashenko, as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of Belarus, hosted his Victory Parade in Minsk on that day. But there was no parade in Astana this year, and Nazarbayev decided to pay tribute to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War by coming to Moscow. After all, the famous Panfilov division, formed precisely in Kazakhstan, defended Moscow in 1941. And in Kazakhstan they remember this.
THE FRENCH VISIT US AND MONSON
There were also some unusual guests in the stands of Red Square. Before the Parade, the attention of journalists was attracted by the famous American boxer Monson, who recently received Russian citizenship. He curiously turned his shaved head around and posed for the television cameras.
By the way, after the Parade, Putin went to the stands to greet the guests. But not the colorful Monson, but a French couple sitting modestly on the sidelines who came to Moscow to hand over their family heirlooms - orders to the parents of the “Russian Rambo”, Hero of Russia Alexander Prokhorenko, who caused fire on himself during the liberation of Syrian Palmyra. Putin shook their hands and thanked them for their action.
PRESIDENTS REMEMBERED ALL HERO CITIES OF THE USSR
From Red Square, Putin and Nazarbayev went to the Alexander Garden to lay wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. And then the presidents laid flowers on the steles of all the hero cities of the former USSR. And Moscow, and Kyiv, and Odessa... All without exception. After all, Victory in the Great Patriotic War was common to that huge country. And the veterans of some hero cities, who now find themselves abroad, where the authorities are trying to forget about that Great Victory, distort it and change it, are not to blame for this.
Heroes die not when death comes, but when they are forgotten. Every year the Great Patriotic War recedes further into the past. There are fewer participants in those events. It is all the more valuable that for millions of our compatriots Victory Day remains a real national holiday. It is a symbol of respect and gratitude of descendants to their great-grandfathers, the spiritual unity of a multinational country. We will tell you about the events for May 9, 2017 in Moscow.
In honor of the 72nd anniversary of the surrender of Germany, about 2,000 interactive platforms and interesting programs were organized for guests and residents of the capital. Public events - rallies, parades, folk festivals, concerts, honoring veterans, laying flowers at the monuments of the fallen - are the main events of this day.
Parade at the Kremlin walls
The most significant event of the holiday will traditionally begin at 15:00 on Red Square. Unlike last year's absolutely grandiose anniversary parade, this one will be a little more modest, but no less impressive. On May 9, 2017, 11 thousand military personnel, about 100 units of equipment and 71 aircraft will take part in the march along Red Square.
For the first time, viewers will see ultra-modern:
- self-propelled artillery mounts "Coalition-SV";
- missile systems (RC) “Bal” and “Bastion”;
- new modifications of Typhoon vehicles with increased protection.
The following will also pass on the paving stones:
- Yars missile systems;
- self-propelled howitzers "Msta-S";
