Flight Attendant Day is July 12th. Holiday of the air profession - Civil Aviation Flight Attendant Day
Aviation is a very necessary profession, as it safely moves cargo and people over very long distances in a short time. This is one of the safest transport services. July 12 is dedicated to World Flight Attendant Day.
Every year on July 12, the professional holiday of civil aviation is celebrated all over the world, Ros-Register reports. Despite the large role of this industry in the economic development of the country, this day is not a national holiday. But many airlines congratulate their employees on this professional day.
Events are organized for civil aviation employees. This day is celebrated by flight attendants and other employees of aviation companies, as well as teachers, students, course participants and graduates of a special educational institution. Close relatives of aviation professionals and friends will join the festive event.
After the emergence of this type of profession in the 20s of the 20th century, the holiday was officially approved. For the first time, this type of transportation service arose in the countries of Germany. In 1928, the maintenance function was performed by the co-pilot and a special person was soon trained for this. They did this so that the crew would not be distracted for everyone’s safety. The events were created to increase the prestige of the flight attendant, writes the Ros-Registr website. To attract as much attention as possible to companies.
On this day, specialists in this industry receive congratulations from family, friends and colleagues. The main toast on such a day is “so that the number of takeoffs matches the number of landings.” Also, many flight attendants receive well-deserved certificates and prizes. Senior management personally expresses gratitude to their subordinates for their work and professionalism.
On this day, the press and television prepare special issues about this profession. They often film stories about aviation veterans, interview them and talk about their achievements. Since the celebration occurs in the summer, aviation companies often take their employees to the beauty of nature so that specialists can relax.
Flight attendants in civil aviation are responsible for the safe and comfortable flight of citizens. They perform all the necessary functions specified in their instructions. People turn to such an employee for necessary information or for needs related to food or drink.
In order to become a flight attendant, you need to take special courses or graduate from a specialized university. After graduating from an educational institution, specialists leave the educational walls with theoretical and practical knowledge. Specialists of this type get hired only after passing exams.
When recruiting new employees, civil aviation companies place high demands on their future employees. The flight attendant must know foreign languages and be able to provide the necessary first aid. They must also be able to demonstrate a high level of service provided.
This profession is dangerous to life and health. The personnel are constantly under stress, and in addition they are exposed to radioactive radiation. In other countries, aviation professionals receive high salaries and have more options for specialization due to the presence of numerous airlines.
Who among us can imagine flying on board an airplane without a flight attendant? From the outside it seems that this is a simple profession, but yet it combines many functions. This is a manager who can quickly organize the boarding of passengers, a psychologist, a service specialist, and, in extreme cases, a rescuer. The history of this profession began in 1928, when they began to hire a separate person on board an airplane to provide service during the flight, a steward. Mostly these were waiters - men from expensive restaurants. Before this, the co-pilot handled the passengers, which was not entirely convenient. Nowadays, the task of a flight attendant has not changed; the main thing is to ensure the comfort and safety of the flight for passengers. As a tribute to society's respect for this romantic but difficult profession, Flight Attendant Day is celebrated on July 12.

One of the most romantic professions in the world is that of a flight attendant. Of course: working as a flight attendant, you can not only show off in a beautiful civil airline uniform, but also travel around the world, and at the same time receive an excellent salary. There is even a holiday dedicated to flight attendants and stewards: World Civil Aviation Flight Attendant Day, celebrated annually on July 12. Let's find out how this specialty appeared and what people who choose it have to face.
From the history of the profession
World Civil Aviation Flight Attendant Day is a great opportunity to take a look at a page of history.
Flight attendants have existed and successfully performed their duties for the benefit of passengers on civil aircraft for more than 80 years. Initially, to some extent, the function of a flight attendant was assumed by the co-pilot. Soon, however, it became clear: this option is not very good from the point of view of the safety of the car and passengers. Then the management decided that the flight crew would be accompanied in the sky by a steward as a third member of the team in addition to the two pilots. This happened in Germany in 1928.
How did flight attendants appear? The idea of hiring attractive young women as flight attendants originated in the United States. It was dictated by the desire to advertise passenger aviation, and also for reasons of the same notorious, but so important safety: the weight of girls is less than the weight of boys, which in all respects would increase the stability of the aircraft during flight.
History names a certain Ellen Church as the first flight attendant. This girl worked as a nurse before acquiring a new position and made her first flight as a flight attendant on May 15, 1930. Moreover, Ellen was given the task of taking into her own hands the recruitment of young people similar to herself into the first group of flight attendants. They ended up being seven nurses, each of whom was no more than 25 years old and weighed 52 kg.
Requirements for candidates
Nowadays, the principles of selecting young women for the position of accompanying airline passengers are somewhat different. The candidate’s weight no longer plays a special role, because aircraft manufacturing has made great strides forward in the 21st century compared to the 20th century. But the presence of three O is important: a specific external image (natural attractiveness, makeup, speech, facial expressions), a professional image (professional skills, abilities, knowledge) and an internal image (certain character traits and personal qualities). Physical parameters also matter, such as height (for girls it should be between 160-175 cm) and clothing size (46-54). As for young men, young men with a height of at least 170 cm and no more than 185 cm are accepted for the position of civil aviation flight attendant. The age of the candidates is also taken into account: 18-30 years. However, it is worth noting that all of the listed parameters may vary depending on the specific airline.
It is unacceptable for future flight attendants and stewards to have serious physical disabilities, tattoos and piercings, large birthmarks and moles, and scars on open areas of the body. A candidate for the position of accompanying airline passengers must be absolutely healthy. This necessary requirement is due to difficult working conditions. To monitor the physical and physiological condition of stewards and flight attendants, they are required to undergo a medical examination twice a year.
Regarding the education of candidates: it must be at least high school. Another important nuance: proficiency in English. Level: pre-intermediate or intermediate. At least basic knowledge of a second foreign language significantly increases a candidate’s chances of obtaining the coveted position of a civil aviation flight attendant.
Training to become a flight attendant (stewardess)
There are several options for acquiring the skills of a chosen specific profession. The first and most convenient is courses provided by the airline. Such training is completely free, including training on equipment that later becomes a place of work, and internship in a company. The main advantage is guaranteed employment. The only downside is that there is a fairly large competition: 7-10 people per place.
The second option is graduating from an independent school. In this case, the training is paid, no one will employ anyone - this is already the task and problem of the candidate himself.
Wherever you go to study, you will have to do it for about 3 months. In some private educational institutions, the process lasts a month less. They are accepted into a school or course at an airline after a person has passed an interview. It consists of traditional questions and a psychological test. The training itself includes theoretical and practical parts. The first includes the study of the technical characteristics and design of airliners, information on the provision of medical care, conflict resolution, and the use of life-saving equipment. During practical classes, future flight attendants train on equipment that simulates an aircraft cabin. At the end of the training, 30 hours of flight experience are required, after which the graduate of the school/course is given permission to become a flight attendant.
Pros and cons of the specialty
So, what does a person gain by choosing the profession of a steward/stewardess?
Firstly, this, as already mentioned at the very beginning of this article, is an opportunity to see the world. However, you should not hope that you will walk around hospitable France or sultry Algeria between flights - most often the flight attendants do not offer excursions or even a basic walk around your destination. Mostly, he does not even leave the foreign airport building. So, the main advantage of the profession turns out to be a complete disappointment, if you do not take into account the fact of travel itself.
Second bonus: relatively high salary. Its size depends on length of service, which is measured not in years, but in flight hours, and class. In addition, any airline, as a rule, provides its employees with a full social package, vacation from 45 to 70 days, and all kinds of benefits.
Well, and the third plus: early retirement. Already at the age of 45, stewards and stewardesses are seen off to “retire.” Accordingly, the size of the pension for flight attendants is also quite large, considering the salary.
Unfortunately, the profession has more disadvantages. This is, first of all, constant physical activity: you have to spend almost all the time on your feet. Again, endless changes in time zones and climate zones, colossal psychological stress, a busy working day, sleepless nights, a work schedule in which there is no orderliness... In general, by the end of the professional journey, the well-being of even the healthiest person declines.
Former flight attendants have the opportunity to become instructors at their home airline. They have no other prospects for continuing to work in the “flight” field.
Don’t forget to congratulate your flight attendants and flight attendants on World Civil Aviation Flight Attendant Day on July 12 on their professional holiday. They deserve your attention and respect!
Aviation makes it possible to move goods and people over significant distances in a short time. Despite the common misconception, this type of transport is one of the safest. It is an important part of the economy of developed countries. An international professional holiday is dedicated to specialists working in this industry.
When is it celebrated?
World Civil Aviation Flight Attendant Day is celebrated annually on July 12th. The event is not a national holiday; it is not included in the list of memorable dates in the Russian Federation. Many companies support the traditions of honoring.
Who's celebrating
Civil aviation flight attendants take part in the event. The holiday is celebrated by employees of aviation enterprises, teachers, students, course participants, and graduates of specialized educational institutions. Their relatives, friends, acquaintances and close people join the action.
History and traditions of the holiday
The holiday appeared after the formation of a similar profession in the 20s of the 20th century. It first appeared in Germany in 1928, where the functions of serving passengers were transferred from the co-pilot to a specially trained person. This decision was dictated by security considerations. Thus, the crew was freed from performing extraneous tasks.
The purpose of the event is to increase the prestige of flight attendants, draw attention to their problems, and introduce them to their ranks. This action demonstrates the high role of workers in the competitive struggle of companies.
International Flight Attendant Day 2019 brings together specialists in many countries around the world, including Russia. Colleagues and their acquaintances, relatives, friends, and loved ones gather at festive tables in cafes and restaurants. Participants exchange experiences and discuss innovations. There are congratulations, wishes for health, success in responsible work. An invariable attribute of the celebrations is the pronunciation of the traditional toast so that the number of takeoffs coincides with the number of landings.
Distinguished employees are awarded certificates of honor and valuable gifts. Management notes the important role of employees in providing high service.
The media are preparing programs about the history of the industry. The main characters of the stories and interviews are civil aviation veterans, former and current flight attendants. They talk about their life journey and interesting incidents during flights. Events often take place outdoors if the summer weather is favorable. A picnic is accompanied by swimming in ponds, fishing and cooking over an open fire.
About the profession
Civil aviation flight attendants perform passenger service tasks during flights. They are required to provide advice and provide the prescribed food and drinks.
The path to the profession begins after completing courses or an educational institution. The graduate masters the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Only those who have passed the required exams are allowed to work.
Employees are subject to strict requirements regarding knowledge of foreign languages and level of service. The steward must have first aid skills.
The activity is classified as hazardous to life and health. It is caused not only by significant stress and possible disasters, but also by prolonged radiation exposure. Its background during flight in the upper layers of the atmosphere is much higher than on the surface of the Earth. In the West, the profession of a flight attendant is highly paid and in demand due to the large fleet of aircraft of numerous airlines.
It is generally accepted that the holiday originated in Germany in 1928. Almost ninety years ago, a special person began to be hired on board the plane to provide service to the crew and passengers during the flight. Previously, these duties were performed by the co-pilot, which was risky, especially during long flights, and for reasons of flight safety and passenger comfort, the profession of steward was introduced.
At that time, the flight attendants were men, and they were also former waiters who had previously worked in expensive restaurants.
But in 1930, in the USA, pretty and petite girls began to be attracted to work, who, firstly, weighed less than men, and secondly, served as a kind of advertising for passenger air travel. This practice spread throughout the world, giving the profession and the practice of flying a romantic connotation.
The first flight attendant was Helen Church, who completed a nursing course, which became a decisive argument in favor of accepting her as a flight attendant. Her first flight as a flight attendant was on May 15, 1930, on a flight from San Francisco to Cheyenne.
Now the range of qualities that a flight attendant must have has been significantly expanded. They are selected according to the “three O” principle: external image, that is, speech, facial expressions, attractiveness, neatness and others; internal image - it includes character traits, and a professional image, which includes specific skills and knowledge.
The duties of flight attendants include: providing advice on flight program issues, providing food and drinks, and promptly responding to passenger calls.
In addition, flight attendants must speak foreign languages, be able to provide first aid, have high professionalism and composure, and be able to prevent emergency situations.
Despite the romance of the profession, it is classified as dangerous to life and health. In addition to stress, emergency situations and the likelihood of disasters, flight attendants, like the entire crew, are exposed to radioactive radiation from the upper layers of the atmosphere.
This holiday is celebrated not only by flight attendants of civil aviation, but also by students, teachers, as well as students and graduates of courses at specialized educational institutions.
The media prepare programs about this profession, invite veterans of civil aviation - former - and current flight attendants - to the television studio, who talk about cases of flight life, and about the paths that led them to aviation.
On July 12, participants in the celebration exchange experiences and discuss innovations. Distinguished employees are awarded certificates and valuable gifts. During the festive feast, different wishes and toasts alternate, but one remains unchanged - so that the number of takeoffs coincides with the number of landings.
July 12 is World Flight Attendant Day
A simple story about a flight attendant.
Even now, when asked about her future profession, a little girl can answer – flight attendant.
And earlier, at the dawn of the development of aviation, it was the most popular and most unattainable dream of many girls and young women! Although the first stewards were men. Their duties included assisting passengers when boarding and disembarking from the plane. And servicing them during the flight. Back then they were recruited from waiters at fashionable restaurants. And they had nothing to do with technology. Already on the Zeppelin airships there were specially trained specialists in the crew to help passengers with accommodation and to create comfort.
With the rapid growth of aviation, and in particular civil aviation, the urgent question arose about the need for an assistant pilot, a steward, who deals only with passengers, their safety, provides medical assistance, in general, tries to ensure that demanding, capricious and inquisitive passengers do not interfere to the pilot.
So the first steward was a man invited by Lufthansa in 1928. He was flying a Junkers F-13 with four passengers on board.
In 1930, the American transport company Boeing Air Transport (United Airlines) became interested in the experience of its German colleagues and decided to create a similar service on its lines. Ellen Church, a nurse from San Francisco, contributed greatly to this. She took private flying lessons. And after completing the course, she came to the Boeing manager with a request to hire her as a pilot. Na received an offer to gather and lead the first small team of female nurses to work as flight attendants on airlines. The company's management made the right bet.
The fact is that in those years, aviation and passenger transportation was not only new, but also quite dangerous. And the presence on board, during the flight, of a fragile, pretty girl, as a crew member, calmed even the most nervous and fearful passengers. And Ellen’s main profession could come in handy during the flight. Low flight altitudes led to strong turbulence in surface wind currents. Few people endured such an ordeal well. This is where Ellen Church's training as a nurse came in handy.
The selection of seven nurses for the first group of flight attendants was very cruel, even by modern standards. Professional nurse. Not older than 25 years. Weighing no more than 115 pounds, which is about 52 kg. Smaller height was desirable. No higher than 163 cm. And the girls’ first uniform was a simple medical gown. There were also conditions that people in America don’t really like to remember now. Girls did not have the right to marry and have children. They were paid, by those standards, a very decent amount, $125 a month. But there were also a lot of responsibilities that the current “goddesses of the air” are not even aware of. For example, their duties included helping the crew roll the plane out of the hangar and refuel. Loading luggage and cleaning the aircraft. They were guides and told passengers about the places over which the flight took place.
In addition, they provided medical services and fed everyone. And they even caught flies, handed out chewing gum and cleaned shoes for clients! As you can see, there was a lot of work. And, nevertheless, when other airlines followed the example of Boeing Air Transport, there were a huge number of people wishing to become “sky girls” (as they were called then)! Only during the Second World War, due to the massive recruitment of nurses into the army, the selection criteria for girls were somewhat softened. And they began to recruit any suitable girls.
IT IS CURIOUS that in a country of “developed democracy”,
The age criterion was abolished only in the 70s.
And the ban on marriage and children dates back to the 80s!
Today, it is wrong to perceive a flight attendant as a servant who feeds and looks after you. First and foremost, a flight attendant must ensure your safety. And the training program for modern flight attendants is reminiscent of special forces training! Remember, the flight attendant on board is a hospitable hostess who is temporarily hosting you at home. She is not a “give-and-fetch” servant, but a full-fledged member of the aircraft crew. If necessary, she can even fly an airplane; such courses are also included in the training program. Act like you are visiting good friends. And happy flight to you!

Each airline does everything possible to make its crew look sleek, well-groomed, sophisticated and unforgettable. Of course, a flight attendant's clothing must be comfortable and functional: he has to constantly move, lift and lower heavy luggage, and reach certain objects in narrow spaces. The uniform should be comfortable and look like workwear, but the fashion factor is also not excluded. Clothing designs are sometimes developed by the most famous and expensive couturiers.
