TORPEDO - FIRE!
I dedicate this book to Soviet and Russian submariners and bow my head to their courage! How I want to believe that those whose hearts stopped at the combat post did not leave us, but simply continue to fulfill their duty somewhere in a completely different time or dimension.
Chapter first
SALT PRELUDE WITH ALCOHOL AROMAS
The crew members of the nuclear submarine, lined up in two lines, raised their collars and huddled close to each other, exposing their backs to the wind. May in the North does not mean white cherry blossoms and buzzing bees, warming up after winter, but just a weak prelude to a short and cold summer. With snow on the hills and heating on until June. Here and in July, snow may fall, covering the grass, bent from such betrayal.
Behind the short parade ground, leaning on the pier and crushing the car tires hung along for shock absorption, their boat stood like a black, slicked block.
Commander Dmitry Nikolaevich Zhurba, frowning, watched as, after stalling for time, the senior assistant leveled the toes of the boots of the front rank. Finally, the vibrations of the formation died down, the first mate ran back to the beginning of the formation and, putting his hand to his cap, took a marching step and rushed towards the commander.
Comrade captain of the second rank, the crew has been assembled according to your order! Captain of the third rank Dolgov reported!
Yes sir!
They reported that that’s it,” he hesitated, sensing a catch in the commander’s question, the first mate.
Are these Martians?
The commander grinned sarcastically, nodding at two heads in black caps peeking around the corner of the nearest five-story building. The XO cursed with relish when he recognized the faces of the young lieutenants from their crew.
Oh, you sleeping Banderlogs! Well, run here! - he gently scolded the younger generation. - I’ll give you a boost of energy now!
But when the lieutenants realized that they had been exposed and timidly came around the corner, the XO’s jaw dropped. The contagious neighing of horses echoed along the line. And there was a reason.
The lieutenants were dragging the crew's doctor, senior lieutenant Artem Petrov, who was periodically kicking in an attempt to get to his feet. They held the doctor’s cap in their hands, and in order to somehow cover up the flow of emotional outpourings that were loudly spreading throughout the entire garrison, they gagged him with his own tie, rolled up into a neat roll. Artyom's gaze darted wildly around in a vain attempt to determine where he was. Plentiful tears flowed down his cheeks in five streams. The lieutenants tensed and, trying to at least approximately give the doctor a vertical position, brought him out in front of the line. But then Artyom finally managed to undo his tie and, vaguely seeing the commander in front of him, began to voice in a deep voice, like a hired mourner at a wake:
I loved her! I love it!
So! - the commander said, grimacing with disgust and looking around in search of unwanted witnesses. - Throw this body onto our cruise ship. Yes, hurry up. And I’ll deal with him at sea!
Dmitry Nikolaevich looked around warily: the division commander was about to arrive. And the incident with the doctor is a matter, although unpleasant, but internal to the crew, consider it a family matter, and the division commander does not need to know about it at all.
The doctor was dragged to a ladder thrown over the side of the boat, with a tarpaulin stretched on both sides with the inscription “Dmitry Novgorodsky”. Having counted each step with the toes of the doctor's polished shoes, they disappeared into the control room. And on time. The division commander's UAZ rolled onto the pier.
Stand up! - the commander shouted. - Be equal! Attention!
The division commander, a rear admiral with the cutest surname for a naval commander, Lyubimy, got out of the UAZ. Following him appeared a gray-haired old man in an eye-catching civilian coat and hat.
“Another specialist or some kind of modification,” thought Dmitry Nikolaevich. There was nothing unusual about this. There are plenty of them on any ship or boat in the fleet. Seconded from their factories, institutes, bureaus, like eternal appendages to the equipment or mechanics born in their depths, the finalizers were always nearby. They get used to them and no longer pay attention to the people in civilian shirts wandering around the ship like ghostly shadows.
The old man in the hat froze by the car and watched from the side as the admiral received the report from the boat commander. He often had to work with the military, and he was aware that when they play dog games on the topic of “who will give the most honor to whom,” called military ritual, it is better not to meddle with them. They will play enough and remember him.
How are things, Dima? - Rear Admiral Lyubimy asked the commander.
Allows it, Comrade Divisional Commander.
Alexander Sergeevich Lyubimy was a good division commander. He was moderately afraid of the top management, because, like everyone else, he dreamed of a decent send-off to retirement and an apartment in the middle zone, but he also treated his subordinates with understanding. Therefore, he was respected among boat commanders.
It’s good that it allows,” he said thoughtfully, looking along the line. - Tell you what, dismiss the crew, and we’ll talk here.
The admiral remembered his companion and, turning around, shouted:
Mikhail Ivanovich! You're on the boat! You will be accommodated there.
Wow! - thought the commander. - This is necessary, by name and patronymic! A lot of honor for a simple builder.
Dima, you send a couple of sailors to my car, we need to pick up the boxes. But tell me to be careful, because the equipment there is fragile.
This was already getting interesting. The division commander is courting the specialist, who also showed up with his junk, as if he were some Muscovite who had arrived from fleet headquarters for an inspection. The commander glanced sideways at the civilian once again. Very old. Usually, younger engineers are sent from factories. Although it is clear that he is trying to look youthful - a cashmere coat, a colorful scarf around his neck.
“You, commander, have been dealt a dark card,” the admiral began from afar. - Maybe a trump card, or maybe a dummy.
At this point, Dmitry Nikolaevich’s thoughts completely ran away into the cracks and alleys. At the control exit, during numerous briefings, there was no hint of anything unusual or dark. A hike is like a hike. It didn’t even reach full autonomy. Just about two months. And the task is not that difficult. Keep an eye on the Americans conducting exercises in the Bay of Biscay. Not the first time, and probably not the last time.
I'll give you some information, but don't brag to anyone. The commander loves surprises. You know, but feign amazement when, upon your return, you are presented with Kaprazov’s shoulder straps along with a roast pig.
Nowadays. The pride of the Northern Fleet, the Russian nuclear submarine Dmitry Novgorodsky, is leaving for duty in the Middle Atlantic. A hike would be just like a hike, if not for the presence on board of a military expert with cunning equipment. The high command ordered a secret experiment to be conducted at sea. And they carried out...
Cold summer of 1942, at the height of the Second World War. There's no way you can go back. No matter which shore you approach, there are strangers everywhere. The main thing is that our own Soviets will not stand on ceremony with the crew. And the nuclear submarine "Dmitry Novgorodsky" involuntarily becomes a kind of "Nautilus", a homeless sea wanderer.
But it’s hard to remain indifferent when your grandfathers and great-grandfathers are fighting and dying nearby. And a requiem for the PQ-17 caravan is about to sound nearby. The crew decides to begin military operations against the fascist reptiles. A nuclear reactor, providing an almost unlimited cruising range and complete autonomy, excellent acoustic equipment, Vodopad jet torpedo missiles, the latest MANPADS - all this makes the Dmitry Novgorodsky a formidable weapon in the fight against the fleet of the Third Reich. The submarine cruiser begins a new combat campaign. Or rather, he continues what he started...

About the book “Torpedo - fire!” Peter Zaspa
The book “Torpedo - fire!” is the first part of a series of the same name. Petr Zaspa created an exciting adventure novel based on the most terrible historical event of the last century - the Second World War. Reading this work will be interesting for all lovers of naval adventures.
At the beginning of the story, events unfold in our time. The Russian nuclear submarine Dmitry Novgorodsky is setting sail to the shores of the Atlantic to carry out an important scientific experiment. However, these secret studies led to the incredible - a nuclear submarine with its entire crew was transported to another dimension. The main characters, abandoned 70 years ago, found themselves in the thick of it. The year is 1942, the height of the Great Patriotic War. Everywhere you look there are only enemies. What should our contemporaries do, having crossed the boundaries of history? Should I go somewhere to South America and wait out this bloody massacre or help my grandfathers fight for their Motherland? The choice turned out to be obvious, especially since the most important thing for victory is ultra-modern water combat equipment with enormous capabilities. True, the team chosen was not very professional, but they learn from mistakes...
Peter Zaspa wrote a very realistic and reliable work from the point of view of historical events. Typically, in many books about going back in time, the main characters strive to change the course of history. Here they are assigned a more modest role - they fight for their country at the level of ordinary soldiers. It is not they who turn the millstones of history, but history that “grinds” them.
The fear and confusion of the crew in the first moments after entering the past is also an important detail that makes you believe in what is happening. It is not surprising that at first the submarine suffers huge losses - both human and material. Gradually, the captain and his crew become real masters of naval warfare and launch a large-scale campaign against the Germans. No one can understand where this miracle of technology came from, and the ending of the book is quite logical - not only the Nazis, but also the Soviet Union are starting the hunt for the submarine. The NKVD structures, led by Comrade Beria, become new, more dangerous enemies of the brave crew.
The book “Torpedo - fire!” is not only an exciting combat adventure in a dimension unusual for the main characters, but also a rather educational historical epic. Peter Zaspa presented all the historical details as accurately as possible, including the names and features of military equipment and even the names of some fighters. If you want to see the Great Patriotic War from a cross-section, through the eyes of ordinary soldiers of the Soviet and German armies, you should definitely read this work.
Ending at the most intriguing point, the novel invites the reader to quickly pick up the continuation of this story called “The Promised Wunderland.”
