How to change mac os screen resolution. Programs for changing screen resolution
Along with the launch OS X Mountain Lion, company Apple presented us with several changes. Some of them are big, some are small. One of these “almost imperceptible” was small display icon disappears from the taskbar, which allowed you to make changes to the settings of the built-in and external display. We will tell you three ways that will help solve this problem.
1. Use the keyboard
Of course, you can open the display settings through the menu "System Settings" which are located in the Dock, but this will take you some time. Therefore, the developers came up with a simple way to quickly open the display settings menu: you just need to press a key combination Alt+F1 or F2, which are responsible for increasing the brightness of the screen. After this, a window will appear in front of the user where you can specify the necessary parameters.
By the way, if you need to adjust the screen resolution manually, select the menu item "Scaled" And if you have a question about setting up an external screen, press and hold the Alt key, after which a button will appear in the lower corner "Find screen."
2. Display Menu Application
Of course, you can bypass the new Mountain Lion standards by installing additional software. But you shouldn’t scroll through this point prematurely, because Display Menu app approved by Apple and available for free on the Mac App Store. Download link After installation, the application will create the same icon in the taskbar and give users access to all the necessary settings. In addition, there is a good function called "Mirror Dispays" which duplicates the image from the main screen to all others that are connected to the Mac. The only drawback is the lack of a version for the new generation MacBook Pro.
3. QuickRes app
This option is suitable for those who are the proud owners of the new Retina MacBook Pro, and those who are lucky enough to use a Mac in general. QuickRes app is not available in the Mac App Store, but judging by the reviews on official page project (the link to which is directly), the application is notable. Most of the functions are similar to the Display Menu application, but they are designed in a slightly different style, and some functions are slightly expanded. For example, the user is offered 8 additional resolution settings. According to the creators of the application themselves, QuickRes is the only application that allows you to set an incredibly huge resolution, even by modern standards.
I'm looking for recordings of some screencasts, and 720p (1280x720) seems to be the best choice for resolution. It's supported by video sites like YouTube and Vimeo as one of the standard "HD" resolutions, but it's small enough to be viewed comfortably on smaller screens without having to play the video in full screen.
However, there is no 1280x720 option in my system settings. How can I force Mac to use this resolution? I've seen SwitchResX and I've been trying to get it to work, but it's very difficult and I've had no luck with it. Are there other utilities that do the same thing? By purchasing a Mini DisplayPort -> HDMI adapter and connecting it to a 720p TV?
Buying a MiniDisplay port to an HDMI adapter and then connecting a 720P display in mirroring mode works when the effective resolution is set to 720P. As shown in the screenshot below. The screenshot shown in preview mode was taken when the setup was in mirroring mode with a 720P TV. The screenshot below that contains this screenshot is when the MacBook is running in normal 1280 x 800 mode.

One quick tip for finding more resolutions is to hold down the Option key while clicking the Scaled button in System Preferences > Displays. This definitely works in OS X El Capitan, and I think it worked in Yosemite at least.
For example, without the option, my 1440x900 macbook screen gives me 1440 x 900, 1280 x 800, 1152 x 720 and 1024 x 640. But when I add Option it adds 1140 x 810 , 1280 x 720 (the one you want) and 800 x 600 .
Try recording a smaller area or shortening the footage after recording. 720P is a 16:9 aspect ratio, while Macs use 16:10 screens, so 1280 x 800 is the closest match
I was able to do this using SwitchResX on my 13" MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite. The little utility allows you to choose from a very long list of common and not so common resolution sizes. Among them is 720P.
Interestingly, I was able to use 1080P even though my display doesn't support high resolution. The quality seemed almost native to me (granted, I'm not a demonstrator or gamer), but everything was too small for me.
I've already recorded a few screenshots with ScreenFlow and they come out at a perfect 1280 x 720 pixels.
Switchers allow you to change the screen resolution much more than the system settings allow: http://www.madrau.com/
Try QuickRes.
