Anton Babikov biography personal life. Anton Babikov: I look forward to global changes in Russian biathlon
Anton Babikov is a famous Russian biathlete who has achieved incredible success during his career and continues to delight fans with new prizes. Currently, interest in this person is shown by the fact that over the last season, the biathlete has improved quite well and began to show impressive results. In addition, Anton Igorevich Babikov is a bright, strong and promising athlete who can become a coach in the future.
Anton Babikov was born on August 2, 1991 in Ufa. In addition to Anton, there are 3 more brothers in the family. All the boys in this family have been involved in sports since childhood. But Anton did not come to biathlon right away. At first he was interested in boxing and went to classes with his older brother. Then he became seriously interested in volleyball, basketball and skiing. A ski coach noticed the young man's athletic character and advised him to join the biathlon section. Anton followed this recommendation. This is how his career in professional sports began. This is exactly how the biography of the future biathlete Anton Babikov took shape. Everyone knew that he could achieve incredible success.
First successes
Already in 2002, Anton Babikov joined the junior national biathlon team. As part of this team, in 2010 he took part in the World Junior Biathlon Championships. The competition took place in Slovakia.
Anton Babikov won bronze in the pursuit race and also received the highest award for the relay. However, this was a short-lived success. The athlete lacked professional experience, physical training and motivation. The athlete’s most important achievements will come later.
Major victories
After success in junior championships, Babikov joined the main national biathlon team. In 2013, he participated in the national championship and won first place. Personal life for biathlete Anton Babikov comes in second place, but family and relatives are always nearby. During the off-season, he spends all his free time with his family and friends. In fact, not many people have this attitude towards family values.
In 2014, Anton Babikov made a successful debut at the European Championships, where he received bronze for individual races. At that time, the Russian team had more titled athletes: Tsvetkov. Garanichev, Shipulin. However, many sports experts already at that time had high hopes for Anton Babikov. After all, the athlete was distinguished by special hard work and perseverance, and showed excellent results in training. The desire to become first is inherent only in real athletes.
The biathlete achieved considerable results two years ago. His desire to become the best was always assessed positively by his coaches. Despite all this, he is a team player and is ready to help his teammates also earn medals. As a result of such long work, Anton Babikov won gold at the 2015 World Cup. During the competition, he beat the favorites of this sport: Fourcade and Tsvetkov.
At competitions in 2016 at the European Championships, which took place in Tyumen, Babikov won two top awards at once, thereby confirming the title of a key athlete in the national biathlon team. He always performed quite well at Russian competitions, which is why he really likes to participate in home competitions.
The successes of a young and promising athlete are regarded quite highly. He progresses with ease and strives for his best performance.
In 2017, Anton became an Honored Master of Sports. In the same year, at the Russian Championship, he won third place in the pursuit race. Of course, many dream that in the future he will become an equally eminent coach and will be able to win various medals.
Personal life
The athlete always enjoys communicating with fans and the press. Friends and acquaintances of Anton Babikov characterize him as an open, kind young man. Despite his outstanding sporting achievements, Anton Babikov does not suffer from star fever, but is skeptical about his fame. Today, Anton Babikov is more interested in biathlon than in his personal life. The problem is that at the moment he is at the peak of his form and can achieve a lot, but he will always have time to find a girl. This is how he answers all questions regarding relationships.
The young man is still not married, although all his brothers have already started families. Nothing is known about the athlete’s girlfriend; Babikov does not talk about his personal life.
In his free time, the titled athlete enjoys reading classic literature and listening to music. At the same time, he gives preference to foreign authors, in particular, Hermann Hess. Anton Babikov enjoys playing various sports: running, cycling, and loves playing football and basketball.
Anton Babikov: I look forward to global changes in Russian biathlon
Russian biathlete Anton Babikov, after the mixed relay, in which the Russian team took ninth place, summed up the performance of Russian biathletes at the Olympics in Pyeongchang.
- How do you feel?
- From what?
- From today's race.
- Actually, I'm happy with the fight. Of course, I wanted to be much taller. I believed that we could fight for the top three. And, in principle, if we had not made mistakes at the borders, this would have been possible. Everyone went to the race charged. No one had any thoughts: if we are in the eight, then this is normal for us.
Articles | Biathlon goes home without medals. Questions remain. It’s unclear who to ask
Of course, our rivals have more titled teams, but we fought. I believe that the intrigue persisted for quite a long time and it was possible to break higher.
- What stopped you then? Physical readiness, nerves?
- A collection of small errors. In fact, no one did anything bad - they didn’t go into circles, they didn’t fall behind in the distance. It was simply impossible to make minor mistakes. If teams with such compositions as France and Germany could make some mistakes, then we couldn’t do that today. But, apparently, we were lacking somewhere; at every stage we made these minor mistakes.
- Tatyana and Ulyana said that while shooting they were hampered by the wind, which rose and then subsided.
- Starting from the pursuit, the wind was insignificant and, in my opinion, it was not its changes that affected the shooting. Personally, I was nervous, so I had some slight imperfections on the first shots. I think the problem is not in the wind, but in psychology. And they are not some kind of global ones.
- Why was Matvey Eliseev put in the last stage?
- The question is not for me. There was some kind of idea in this. I don't think it's a good tactic to rank people from weakest to strongest. Matvey showed good speed in the individual race, so why not try him at the last stage? Apparently, the coaches thought that if something went wrong at the women’s stages, then I would be able to join the fight better than Matvey. But it’s better to ask the coaches this question.
- You are leaving tomorrow. No wonder you came?
- Definitely - not in vain. It doesn’t happen that only those who take prizes come to the Olympics. It cannot be that 100 people will come and take away 100 medals. We still tried to fight in every race and give our best. Therefore, I think that the experience that we will take from here will help the entire Russian team.
Russian biathlon has been stormy for the last few years. It would seem that with the arrival of the new head of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBR) Vladimir Drachev, everything should have changed. But no! Judging by recent events, it remains a mess. As it turned out, in a day you can not only fall out of the team’s ranks, but also get into it again. A striking example is the situation with Russian biathlete Anton Babikov..
Background
The men's relay race was to take place at the second stage of the World Cup in Hochfilzen (Austria). The composition was determined. According to the plans of the coaching staff, Matvey Eliseev, Evgeny Garanichev, Dmitry Malyshko and Alexander Loginov were supposed to perform. After Russian Anton Babikov became a silver medalist at the IBU Cup stage, he was noted and even planned to be invited to the team directly for the Austrian stage, for the relay.
“We are considering Babikov for the relay. Yesterday in the IBU Cup he ran well" , - said the head coach of the Russian team Anatoly Khovantsev in an interview with TASS.
However, events after this statement flew faster than a bullet. In the evening, information appeared on Drachev’s official Instagram account that Babikov had refused to participate in the World Cup. As the head of the RRF stated, the athlete refused to come to Hochfilzen. The next morning, the biathlete himself denied this information on his Instagram page in response to questions from fans.
“It’s interesting to learn about such things from the Internet, I can say for myself - I didn’t refuse”, - stated the athlete.
Closer to the start of the relay race, a statement appeared from the RBU that the organization’s leadership had decided to suspend the athlete from participating in the World Cup for a year.
“We won’t invite him to the World Cup a second time; let him compete in the IBU Cup if he’s better there.” , - TASS quoted Drachev as saying.
A scandal immediately broke out: the biathlete voluntarily refused to participate in the World Cup as part of the main team. In addition, Evgeny Garanichev was unable to take part in the race, and Eduard Latypov was urgently entered in his place. Throughout the broadcast of the race, the issue of Babikov’s non-participation was discussed. Note that the Russian quartet took fifth place in the men's relay.

Four-time Olympic champion in biathlon Alexander Tikhonov clarified the situation. According to him, he personally called Babikov’s coach Viktor Nikitin and he confirmed that his ward did not refuse to move from Ridnaun, where the IBU Cup was held. It turned out that the athlete was not even aware of the “behind-the-scenes games” into which he was drawn in absentia.
“I spoke with Babikov’s coach Viktor Nikitin, who confirmed that he did not refuse to run the relay. I immediately dialed Babikov, who confirmed to me that he did not refuse. It was the coaches who decided among themselves that he shouldn’t move. But no one asked him, and he didn’t refuse.” , Tikhonov wrote on his personal website.
After the end of the relay at the World Cup, Drachev tried to clarify the situation, but this did not make it clearer or clearer. According to him, together with the head coach of the Russian national team, Anatoly Khovantsev, they called the coaching staff of the team that is competing at the IBU Cup. Coach Sergei Belozerov asked to call back after talking with the athlete for five minutes. In a return conversation, Belozerov said that Babikov was tired and “will not go to you, but will stay here.” After this, Anatoly Khovantsev expressed his own version of the “embarrassment” that had occurred.
“I’ll say one thing about Babikov: after yesterday’s sprint he didn’t feel well. On the finishing lap I lost about 30 seconds. If you take it from there, then this is the road. Yesterday we agreed that it was better for him not to come here.”, - said the head coach on the Match TV channel.
It turns out that the athlete became an indirect participant in the showdown between the two coaching staffs? The question arises: why is communication between them not established?
The fact that Babikov was accused in vain is confirmed by the fact that ultimately the leadership of the RBU decided to allow the athlete to participate in the third stage of the World Cup, which will be held in Nove Mesto (Czech Republic) from December 20 to 23. Together with Babikov, Alexander Povarnitsyn will join the first team. Meanwhile, Eduard Latypov and Alexey Slepov were sent to the IBU Cup. In the women's team, instead of Ulyana Kaisheva, who will go to the IBU Cup, Anastasia Morozova will compete in the national team.
Fans' reaction
By the way, spectators of the World Cup biathlon battles doubted the words of RBU President Vladimir Drachev. According to many Internet users, Babikov could not voluntarily refuse to participate in the World Cup.
“There Guberniev and (Dmitry - Ed.) Vasiliev gave some kind of scolding that you “refused because of your health, and this is the wrong decision for an athlete.” Somehow, I don’t believe them at all,” wrote user writerudite in Anton Babikov’s profile.
Unbrokenrecord: "Here you go. The RBU suspended Anton from competing at the World Cup until the end of the year. The insanity grew stronger. Drachev has completely sunk to the bottom.”
ilinitskaya_olga: “On the live broadcast of the women’s race, Guberniev told the whole country that you refused to run for the national team! Where has this been seen, etc. It was disgusting to listen because it was not Guberniev’s place to evaluate the actions. He works with his tongue, maybe he should go to work as a head coach since he knows everything better than anyone else! I want to support you Anton in this situation!”

Bregedosinka: “Anton, congratulations on your excellent performances (at the IBU Cup. - Ed.). It’s a pity that your bosses and the press are more trying to hurt and pick on the athlete than to support him! It was very unpleasant to listen to them now! I hope you are not susceptible to this kind of bullshit! Good luck at the starts!”
But these comments are already showing off on the Instagram account of the President of the RBU.
biathlonmylove: “Vladimir Drachev, he, of course, refused. I wanted to go to the Russian Cup. You can’t admit your responsibility, your honest selection is a mess. You regularly shift the blame onto others!... You have turned sports into a trash heap! Shame on you!”
asil.li.00: “Babikov didn’t refuse; what’s more, they didn’t even offer him! Why mislead people?
This situation did not leave many indifferent. Of course, there were those who defended the position of Vladimir Drachev. But the majority still expressed support and accepted the opinion of Anton Babikov.
Such a victory can be called conditional. Although what kind of victory can we talk about if the other side of the “combat” did not take any steps? And in general, I found myself drawn into these “games” for no apparent reason and for what reason.
Russian biathlon is already on the brink, and the latest events with the Austrian police prove this. So why else “shake it” from the inside? In the end, the boat may capsize.
Anton Babikov is a Russian biathlete, Honored Master of Sports, and a member of the national team. The biathlete has many prestigious international awards. Anton is the 2017 world champion in relay, three-time European champion and three-time bronze medalist at the European Championships.
Anton Babikov was born in Ufa into a large family. The parents of the future champion, who were also professional athletes at one time, have four sons, of whom Anton is the youngest. Although it’s probably not entirely correct to say so, because the boy was born in a “duet” with his twin brother Roman.
Parents did not force sports as a profession on their children, but tried to instill in the boys a love of physical exercise. Therefore, each of them went through different sports. Of course, Anton was no exception. While still very young, the boy attended athletics and football, and a little later, following the example of his older brother, he became interested in boxing and went to a sports school to hit a punching bag for 2 years.
At the age of 11, the young athlete wanted to learn how to ski confidently. But the section that Anton ended up in was not professional enough. Therefore, the section coach, like the school physical education teacher, seeing Anton’s efforts and potential, advised the boy to pay attention to another winter sport - biathlon. Moreover, Ufa has a very good base for preparing children for “ski shooting”.
This is how, almost by accident, Anton Babikov got into biathlon at the age of 12 and quickly realized that this was exactly what he was looking for. However, the boy did not become a star in children's and youth competitions. As the athlete says today, at that time the body was accumulating strength to shoot in adult competitions.
Biathlon
In big sports, Anton Babikov’s star began to rise in 2013. The athlete became the Russian champion in sprint cross and joined the Bashkortostan national team. A year later, Anton Babikov added a championship in the individual race to his next victory in sprint cross. By the way, Babikov considers this classic competition to be his favorite, although for most biathletes such a race does not look attractive due to too much labor.
In 2014, Anton received his first bronze medal at the European Open Championships in the Czech Republic in the 12.5 km pursuit race. A year later, at the European Open Biathlon Championships in Otepää, Estonia, the biathlete repeated this achievement. The athlete also added a victory in the relay race as part of the Russian 4x7.5 km relay race to his personal bronze medal. Anton Babikov became the winners of the championship together with Alexander Pechenkin and Alexey Slepov. Following the results of the championship, the biathlete received the title of Master of Sports of Russia of international class.
But the real breakthrough came in 2016. At the European Championships, which took place in Tyumen, the young biathlete won bronze in the sprint, and also climbed to the top of the podium twice. The first time for winning the single mixed relay, and the second time for the pursuit race, which became a natural benefit for Anton Babikov.
Thanks to his outstanding performance in Tyumen, Anton was included in the Russian team to participate in the World Championships, which was held in the Norwegian city of Holmenkollen. By the way, like most athletes, Babikov is unequivocal about signs and superstitions. For example, Anton took all the 2016 medals with him to Norway. According to Anton - for good luck.
Personal life
Anton Babikov is an open and positive person, ready to share with the press many details of his own biography. The athlete freely talks about his large family: parents, brothers, their wives and children. But the young man flatly refuses to give information about whether his heart is free. Although it is known that the athlete is not married yet. Unlike the three brothers.
In the winter of 2017, rumors appeared that the famous athlete still had a girlfriend. Journalists also learned the identity of the champion's chosen one - skier Alexandra Batsina turned out to be Anton Babikov's girlfriend. The couple in love did not try very hard to hide their relationship, happily taking pictures in each other's arms. Happy joint photos of young people began to appear in the media. But soon other rumors began to spread - that the lovers had broken up. Whether this is true or not, and who is now the lady of Anton Babikov’s heart, the athlete does not say.
Anton Babikov loves his hometown very much, but has repeatedly stated that he would prefer to live in a quiet village. There he could indulge in reflection on various philosophical topics, as well as pay attention to his favorite hobby - reading. Although many people have a stereotype of athletes as having little education, this is actually not the case. Moreover, Anton prefers serious classical literature. One of his favorite writers is , and he has mastered his entire bibliography.
Anton Babikov now
Today, Anton Babikov’s sports career is at its peak. In the 2015-2016 season, the biathlete took part in the individual race at the World Cup in Östersund and finished with 18 results. In January 2016, at the stage in Anterselva, Anton Babikov started 31st in the pursuit and finished seventh.
A year later, on December 4, 2016, in Östersund, the biathlete started seventh and arrived at the finish line first, achieving the first victory in his career at the World Cup stage. Anton Babikov was ahead of the competition favorite, the Frenchman. At the same time, Martin finished only third. Babikov's compatriot came to the finish line second.
In 2017, the biathlete joined the Russian team at the World Championships in Hochfilzen. Together with Alexey Volkov, Maxim Tsvetkov and Anton Babikov, he took part in the 4x7.5 km relay race. This discipline brought Anton Babikov the title of world champion.

This is the end, my friend.
Two biathletes failed the men's sprint on Thursday. One's name is Martin, the other's is Anton. Martin patiently stopped near each journalist and explained what had happened and what he would do. Anton passed by everyone, although, unlike Martin, he was interesting only to his own people - representatives of various Russian media who came to the stage in Nove Mesto.
https://www.instagram.com/p/Brn0fSTh-Ja/Martin, upon arriving at the hotel, posted a post on his Instagram commenting on what happened. This was done for those of his fans who no longer read traditional media, but simply follow their idols on social networks.
The last post on Babikov’s Instagram is dated December 13. Our athlete did not comment on the failure of yesterday’s sprint.
“Everyone for the Match!”: results of the men’s sprint in Nove Mesto
What's happening?
Let's assume that Babikov is disappointed in the Russian sports press. Unprofessional and jaundiced, she twists his words, distorts their meaning, manipulates and mocks. Although this, of course, is not true. But let's assume.
So why does he behave this way with those of his fans with whom he communicates directly on social networks? Why did Fourcade find the strength to tell them what happened - briefly, but nevertheless, but Babikov did not? Why should 105 thousand of his subscribers feel that Babikov doesn’t care about them?
Journalists will find other athletes. We have the same Fourcade, two Boes, Germans, Swedes, who are always ready to communicate regardless of their result. Sometimes they ask not to delay, because they are wildly cold in the time that has passed after the finish, during the time that they are already giving interviews to all those who are standing in the mixed zone.
Why did Daria Domracheva, at the first stage of the World Cup of the 2017/18 season, find the strength - dancing to warm up - to answer questions from journalists, but Anton Babikov in the relatively warm Nove Mesto did not?
Why even Evgeny Garanichev, who had avoided the press in previous years, began to stop this season, moreover, he found the strength to do this in Hochfilzen after a police visit, and in Nove Mesto - yes, he passed, but looking at the journalists with an apologetic smile: they say , failed the shooting, what can we talk about, guys, but Babikov couldn’t even do this - clearly refuse?
Why did Alexander Loginov, our pride of this season, answer questions about doping, respect for Russia, and the attitude of rivals at the press conference after the sprint for too long? I put on my jacket, thinking that the questions were over, took it off again, realizing that there were still many of them, put it on again, took it off again, but answered patiently, selected words, and communicated. Why does Loginov, who has a reason not to welcome journalists, have the strength to communicate, but Babikov, who seems to be so clean in the eyes of anti-doping that he even went to the Olympics, does not?
It seems that several years ago we raised a generation for which Sleptsov’s phrase about how athletes owe nothing to anyone is the norm of life. A generation accustomed to the fact that the title “friend of Shipulin” gives you an additional coefficient when recruiting a team for the World Cup stages. The generation that, finding itself in conditions of strict sports selection, showed itself - failed.
This season turned out to be truly significant for our men's biathlon. Having gone through ups and downs, Malyshko and Slepov managed to qualify for the team for the first cups, while the golden boys Babikov and Tsvetkov fell and then were unable to rise. Now they will have a second chance at the Izhevsk Rifle. If I were the bookmakers, I would already open bets on the fact that they will fail this selection too.
What will happen next?
We must pay tribute to Drachev and Khovantsev. Consciously or accidentally, they created conditions in which athletes are valuable only and exclusively for their results, here and now. Conditions in which we are quite rightly happy for Loginov, worried about Malyshko, and hopeful for Eliseev. Let's forget about Babikov and Tsvetkov. Such conditions should have appeared a long time ago, but, apparently, for this, people who had not forgotten their sports past, who remembered how they were once treated in the 1970s (in relation to Khovantsev) and on turn of the century (if we talk about Drachev). And those who don’t want this for their athletes. The fact that Drachev, having cooled down, managed to put the sports principle above discipline and subordination, calling Babikov to the World Cup, speaks precisely of this.
It has already been noted more than once that Khovantsev needs a couple of seasons to implement his plans. In just a couple of seasons, under such pressure of objective selection, it will become clear who is ready to perform in such conditions and who is not. All the unnecessary people who are accustomed to behind-the-scenes agreements will leave. The wolves will remain. And Khovantsev will be preparing this pack of wolves for the 2022 Olympics. We'll see whether Anton Babikov will be in it. But a person who is unable to even look journalists in the eye and tell his Instagram followers what happened to him is unlikely to be able to resist Fourcade, Boe, Samuelson and all this cheerful company that replaces each other on the podium.
