Review. Assassin's Creed Rogue - the other side of the coin
It can easily seem like a serious work, and not just another chapter in the alternative history of America in the 18th century. The story of a man disillusioned with the ideals of brotherhood could easily pass for the debunking of a great myth. The image of an assassin, a subject of serious cult for millions of fans, this time was supplemented with dark colors. According to Rogue, the working methods of the hooded killers organization can cause disgust and uncomfortable questions.
In the third part, we already played as a Templar - but the experience of Haytham Kenway cannot be compared with what is in store for Shay Cormac, a former assassin who turned against the brotherhood after a series of bloody events. The last straw for him was the earthquake in Lisbon, which the scriptwriters clearly sum up in the game with Voltaire’s words about God. A difficult fate, a moral choice, a paradigm shift is, in general, a real tragedy, and not just a broadcast of events from the other side of the barricades.
Let’s say right away, I really want to believe in all this during the passage Rogue. It is all the more sad to realize that a significant part of the fresh emotions here is caused by shooting from a blowgun with an under-barrel grenade launcher, and the whole “tragedy” often comes down to receiving puncture wounds from mercenaries hiding in bales of hay.
Digital Fortress
The authors shift their emphasis rather timidly, which is why tectonic shifts in the monolith Assassin's Creed you don't notice it right away. Only a few hours after the turning point in Portugal (one of the best moments Rogue, which still has to wade through the traditionally lush plot with a separate dramaturgy) several new variables fit into the familiar formula.
The same blowgun in the hands of Cormac slightly simplifies stealth: get rid of enemies at a distance of Rogue possible without any noise. The grenade launcher, on the other hand, is ideal for the ceremonial destruction of entire squads and is aimed at taking the player out of his comfort zone. You need to use it carefully: even as a Templar, attracting everyone’s attention here is still more expensive.
Surviving in open battle is not always easy, and now there are also attempts on the hero’s life by former colleagues, murderers in the service of the Brotherhood. The assassins are carefully camouflaged (on benches, in bushes, among peaceful townspeople), and they need to be declassified using eagle vision. Apply professional skills in Rogue happens more often than ever before in the series, so you quickly start to feel naturally paranoid. Otherwise, the killers will easily deal with Cormac - they use firearms, hidden blades and smoke bombs. If Shay misses a fatal blow, any subsequent damage is guaranteed to be fatal.
Shay will devote a significant part of the game to fighting with those who were still in the same harness with us.
In other words, getting used to the role of a Templar occurs at the level of small mechanical details, pinpoint gameplay innovations - but it is these minor changes that I would like to describe first. Because the space to display these innovations in Rogue almost the same as in previous games. Describe the world for the hundredth time Assassin's Creed and the laws by which it functions hardly make sense.
Yes, it is still a huge ecosystem of three zones: River Valley, New York and the North Atlantic. And with its awkward layering, it can captivate you for a couple of weeks of real time. One minute you're fighting bandits in the Lower Manhattan area, the next you're trying to take a fort, and an hour later you're harpooning humpback whales and crushing ice floes in the waters of the Atlantic (during the breaks you can look for Indian totems or fragments of a Viking sword).
Unlike some, where everything, including extra-plot entertainment, had approximately the same tone (remember saloon poker, hunting, skirmishes near the cliffs - stylistic elements of the same genre), Assassin's Creed habitually hits the user over the head with a collection of motley situations and possibilities. It's confusing, but also fascinating in its own way.
The battle choreography is still excellent, but the melee combat itself hasn't changed at all.

Towards the end, the game gives out one truly spectacular mission at sea. | Fuel barrels allow you to leave a trail of fire on the water. |
The system has long been debugged by Ubisoft, but still contains strange nuances. Long sea voyages, which cannot be avoided, at some point become terribly tiring - a mechanic that seemed interesting back in the day. Black Flag, tragically fizzled out within a year. And this despite the fact that the ship is in Rogue has become noticeably more maneuverable and full-fledged boarding operations have appeared in the game: now opponents can lay claim to your ship. Barrels of fuel and a “Pakla gun,” a rapid-fire airborne weapon of death, appeared in the arsenal, but this does not change the situation too much.
The first ten battles pass as one, it seems that all Rogue and started for the sake of the fleet. Then skirmishes at sea turn into a routine with a benefit that is not entirely obvious to you: there is no need to use the conquered resources, you can go through the entire game without any problems with the initial equipment of the ship. So wouldn't it be easier to avoid new battles?
Therefore, much more than anything else in Rogue I'm excited by the opportunity to bury myself in a haystack, wait for a patrol company to appear from an alley, jump out in front of the soldiers' noses and instantly kill a squad with an explosive shell - this is one of the few specifically “Templar” entertainments. Otherwise, Shay Cormac is in fact still the same assassin, only with a couple of types of original weapons and a very different view on the solution global problems. No more.
Rip off the hood
The fact that the backdrop for Cormack's emotional conflicts is the Seven Years' War, a colonial conflict involving several European countries, does not so much emphasize the drama as inflate the already obscene scale of the action. As the script progresses, we continually find ourselves in hotbeds of battle, and the course of the main mission (without unnecessary details: the case, as usual, involves an ancient manuscript) here sometimes intersects with stories like the liberation of the Indians from the French army.
Attempts to pass off Shay as a tragic character with a difficult character lead nowhere (he is devoid of hints of self-irony, always frowns and is constantly desperately saving someone); the other heroes also perform rather purely mechanical functions. Benjamin Franklin, for example, spends most of his screen time comically mincing somewhere and serving as a target for mercenaries, giving Cormac another reason to commit a new selfless feat.
The writers definitely succeeded in at least one thing: historical figures and events are integrated into the plot quite elegantly.
An uneven plot, balancing between scenes from non-existent Dan Brown novels and almost documentary tediousness (several times the missions sound something like this: kill all enemies; however, when we are asked, for example, to accompany a detachment of Englishmen, nothing exciting happens either), partially redeems touching postmodernism.
Assess the scale of the event: the series no longer addresses so much real story, how much to your own. For the most part, this happens in the sterile environment of the Abstergo corporation, where we find out about half-forgotten heroes like Al-Mualim, but while in the Animus you come across interesting things - for example, about the life of the assassin Achilles, familiar from the third part.
It’s possible to follow all of the above with varying interest. For one bright scene (in addition to the already mentioned Lisbon events, these are also, say, the events at a luxurious reception with the participation of the terminally ill Lawrence Washington), there are five similar and secondary missions, during which you just want to do something out of the ordinary, to dilute the bland , the long-weary job of a mercenary is an intoxicating adventure.
On the other side, Rogue got rid of the nightmare assignments involving eavesdropping, and you are hardly asked to monitor the victims. Most often, Cormac has to penetrate another large camp and eliminate targets. The deck of situations, of course, has to be shuffled personally - however, with a grenade launcher at the ready, sometimes you can even do this quite well.
In terms of pictures, this is, of course, not Unity for new generation consoles, but the level is quite decent.

Date of Birth: 1692 . Date of death: 1758 .
Biography
Adewale was born in Trinidad into a family of slaves and was sold to a wealthy plantation owner as a child. Taking advantage of the opportunity, he fled with a detachment. With this team, Ade sailed the seas for many years, improving his sailor skills. In 1715, Adewale was captured by the Spanish authorities, who decided to send him to Spain and put him on a galleon, which, as usual, was carrying treasures to Europe as part of a Spanish convoy. Thanks to a hurricane and the help of a young Welsh pirate named Edward Kenway, Ade was able to escape. Having freed other prisoners, Ade and Edward captured the brig and sailed just before the storm began. When the hurricane subsided, Ade was free again. Ade became quartermaster on board Talka, "as Edward, who became captain, named his ship. By attacking ships in the vicinity of Nassau, they became obscenely rich and began to lead the life they had always dreamed of. But Ade valued the democratic ideals of the pirate commune much more than the wealth they acquired And, seeing Edward Kenway sink deeper into the abyss of selfishness, greed and vanity, he began to think about another path that would be more consistent with his ideals. In 1716 in Tulum, Ade first encountered the Assassins. Three years later he returned to this place to talk with mentor A-Tabai and ask him many questions about the Brotherhood. The answers pleasantly pleased Ade, and he joined the assassins. For 15 years, Adewale faithfully served the Brotherhood, but over time he was increasingly disturbed by memories of his own past.
In 1735, Ade's ship was caught in a storm, after which the assassin was washed ashore near Port-au-Prince. There he met Bastien Joseph and Augustin Dufour. Adewale was carried away by their fervor, and he decided to help the Maroons. In subsequent years, he directed all his skills and abilities to prepare the Maroon uprising. In 1737, after the assassination of the governor of Port-au-Prince, Marquis Pierre de Faye, Ade fled to Saint-Domingue and then returned to the ranks of the Assassins. Having learned about the terrible earthquake in San Domingo, Adéwale returned there to help friends whom he had not seen for many years, but was faced not only with the consequences of a terrible tragedy. Ade learned that, firstly, Bastien gave birth to a son from him - Babatunde, and secondly, a certain Francois Macandal - a strong-willed but extremely flighty leader of the Maroons - created his own Brotherhood of Assassins in the region.
Taking advantage of the chaos that reigned in Saint-Domingue, the Templars stole two artifacts from Macandal and fled to the west. Ade went after them, promising that after his return he would definitely help rebuild Port-au-Prince, the local Brotherhood and revive his own family.
Achilles
Date of Birth: 1710. Date of death: 1781.
Biography
Achilles was born in the West Indies, into a Caribbean-English family. He became the last assassin accepted into the Brotherhood by the legendary mentor A-Tabai - this happened in the mid-1730s. When Achilles completed his training, he was sent north with the task of founding a new Brotherhood in the American colonies. There he married a woman named Abigail, who bore him a son, Connor. Achilles acquired his own estate, where members of his Brotherhood could always gain strength before heading to the outlying areas of the colonies. He accepted several very gifted residents of the colonies into the Brotherhood - Liam O'Brien, Chevalier Louis-Joseph Gautier de La Verendrye, Kesegovaase, Hope Jensen and, finally, Shay Cormac. Achilles strengthened the ties between the Assassins and the tribes of the Iroquois League, in particular the Mohawks.
In 1755, Achilles was struck by tragedy - his wife and son died of typhus. After this, Achilles focused entirely on the affairs of the Brotherhood, sending Shay Cormac on a special mission to Lisbon. Achilles was shocked to learn that the Apple of Eden was missing from the Forerunner shrine, but he was even more shocked by Shay's open betrayal. After defeating Cormac in a fierce battle, he left him for dead. Ultimately, the Brotherhood recovered from its schism, and Achilles believed that the manuscript had been destroyed, but later learned that George Monroe was searching for it.
Achilles sent Liam and Kesegovaase to kill Monroe. Soon, Kesegovaase informed his mentor that Shay was still alive and had even recently saved Monroe's life. Not forgetting Cormac's betrayal, Achilles ordered the rest of the Brotherhood to kill him. Shay managed to deal with Kesegovaase, but Liam still killed Monroe and took the manuscript from him. After some time, Hope Jensen managed to reproduce one of Benjamin Franklin's experiments and find out the location of the new Forerunner shrine. Achilles and Liam went to the Arctic to find this place. Once there, Achilles realized his mistake - initially there were no Apples of Eden in the shrines, but at the same time they were very important for keeping the world intact.
Suddenly, Achilles and Liam ran into Shay. Liam got into a fight with his former friend, and this caused another earthquake. At this time, Achilles, who was trying to leave the shrine, was intercepted by the new Grand Master of the Templars and Shay's mentor, Haytham Kenway. Haytham defeated Achilles, but Shay persuaded his mentor to spare him. The master reluctantly yielded to Cormac, but wounded Achilles in the leg, maiming him for life. Having experienced the bitterness of defeat, Achilles returned to the estate, where he lived in bleak loneliness until the end of his days.

Haytham Kenway
Date of birth: 1725. Date of death: 1781.
Biography
Haytham was born in London. His father was Edward Kenway - former pirate, who trained his son from childhood for some secret purposes. Shortly before Haytham turned ten, his house was burned down, his half-sister Jenny was kidnapped, and his father was killed. A family friend named Reginald Birch offered to help the boy, telling him at the same time that he was a Templar, although at that age Kenway could hardly understand what this meant. Haytham was introduced to Edward Braddock, nicknamed "Bulldog", a British army soldier and another Templar, and both hated each other literally at first sight.
Several years later, in an unsuccessful search for Haytham's sister, he moved with Birch to the French city of Troyes. Kenway soon turned into a ruthless and skilled killer who carried out orders for the Templars. Continuing the search for his father's killers, he met Braddock again in Germany, and even managed to serve in his unit - Coldtrees - during the War of the Austrian Succession.
In 1754, Haytham killed an assassin named Miko in order to obtain an amulet that showed the way to the First Civilization vault. Some time later, Birch sent him to the North American colonies to prepare for the official founding of the Order there.
Having arrived at the place, Haytham, among other things, began searching for the shrine of the Forerunners. He enlisted the support of the Mohawk Indians, as he rescued several of their fellow tribesmen from captivity - including a woman named Ziyo, with whom Kenway had a tragic but very stormy affair. In 1755, Haytham's agents in Europe informed him that his sister had been found in the Ottoman Empire. He immediately went to her aid, and was deeply shocked to learn from Jenny that Birch, along with other Templars, was behind the attack on their house. It turned out that they were together with other Templars. It turned out that their father was an assassin, and Birch killed him in order to take possession of the secrets he kept.
