Destructive indifference. Why can indifference be destructive for a person's soul? (USE in Russian) Why indifferent people are dangerous
An indifferent person or a “do not care” is a character that perfectly complements the picture of today's world and even claims to be “positive”. Having set a goal, he is able to concentrate on it to such an extent that other areas of his life (including caring for the welfare of loved ones) will recede into the background.
This ability in modern society is called purposefulness (some psychologists call it relative indifference) and is considered a positive quality. The absolute “do not care” differs from the relative in that he is indifferent not only to the needs of other people, but also to his own.
Reasonable "do not care" is considered the ideal form of indifference. The appeal of this form of indifference is that, no matter what impression he leaves of himself, he will remain indifferent in any situation, "not noticing" negative events. But if he nevertheless notices something negative, he will not attach any importance to it.
Sociologists call indifference a person's conscious refusal to participate in changes that affect not only his own life, but also the life of society. The indifferent does not worry about others, is prone to inaction and is constantly in a state of apathy.
Indifference is common to many people and does not arise without reason. One indifferent person from childhood got everything he wanted, grew up selfish, got used to thinking only about himself and he doesn't give a damn about the others. Another, brought up in an atmosphere of mutual respect, but who found himself in a situation where the good he did was responded with evil, has lost faith in justice and deliberately turns a blind eye to someone's cruelty.
People belonging to the second type, not wanting the unpleasant situation to happen again, distance themselves from what is happening and often pass by cruelty. But there is also a third type of people. “Everyone gets what they deserve. By interfering, I prevent them from correcting what their ancestors or they themselves have done in their past lives, ”- this is their line of thought.
About the reasons for indifference
One of the reasons for indifference can be a mental disorder - a state in which a person does not know how to show emotions. Compassion is a feeling beyond his comprehension. Such people are often called pragmatists, phlegmatic people, breadcrumbs, but it is impossible to change the situation with hurtful words, especially if the cause of the mental disorder is a serious physical trauma.
No less dangerous are teenage psychological and bodily traumas resulting from love experiences. A young but indifferent person, even once having experienced severe mental (or bodily) pain, can lose faith in people forever.
The lack of affection and warmth experienced in childhood is also a good "building material". According to statistics, most of the indifferent people were "disliked" in childhood.
"People, stay indifferent!" (psychopath motto)
Psychiatric specialists often replace the word “indifference” with the medical terms “apathy” and “withdrawal”. The stoic calm, characteristic of an indifferent person, is considered by official medicine to be a serious mental disorder.
Apathy is a psychological disorder that lies in wait for absolutely everyone - both the lucky and the unlucky. It can occur in any person, regardless of his psychological and material viability. The main cause of apathy, and, therefore, indifference, some doctors call boredom. According to a group of specialists, it is from boredom that even the happiest families are not immune, having a dream job and raising talented and obedient children.
Also, the cause of the disease can be fatigue - both emotional and physical. An indifferent person often suffers from seizures, he is depressed, does not make acquaintances and does not make plans. His own life seems to him dull and useless.
A cheerful and sociable person can be turned into an indifferent and apathetic person by the following situation:
- when he is in tension for a long time;
- does not have the opportunity to rest;
- survived the death of loved ones or being fired from work;
- when an indifferent person, adapting in society worse than others, is ashamed of his natural needs;
- suffers from misunderstanding from others;
- is under the pressure of the person on whom it depends;
- when he is taking hormones.
Psychologists advise to look for the causes of indifference in the patient's inner world - where all his grievances and desires "dwell". Psychologists view indifference as a defense against stress and negativity.
Many mentally ill people deliberately wear a "mask" of indifference in the hope of shutting themselves out of the hostile world that has rejected them for so long.
Indifference through the eyes of a philosopher
Philosophers view indifference as a moral problem, based on the lost awareness of the importance of each person as a unique individual. Gradually turning into a tool for achieving their own goals, considering each other as a commodity, people themselves become things.
Why is indifference dangerous? To answer this question, you need to parse the term itself. In my opinion, indifference is an indifferent attitude towards people, towards the environment, towards what is happening. People with this quality have met at all times. The reasons for indifference are different, but it is safe to say that it is directly related to selfishness. People who are indifferent to everything cannot but be selfish. And now we will try to understand why indifference is all the same dangerous.
In the literature, we can see many examples of human indifference, as well as its consequences. In addition, there are situations in which people show their indifference, and, perhaps, the inner torment of the selfish heroes of the works.
Let's take a look at a couple of examples from fiction.
The theme of indifference is raised in the work of N. V. Gogol "The Overcoat". In this story, the author presented the image of a little man with his little desires and capabilities. The dream of an overcoat for Akaki Akakievich was the only joy in life. In order to make money on it, he saved on everything: he even went to bed early so as not to spend money on light. Finally, having bought an overcoat, the main character is immensely happy, everyone praises his purchase. But, returning home late in the evening, Akaki Akakievich is left without an overcoat. He is robbed and left in a snowdrift. The people who committed this atrocity, I am sure, are the most selfish. They did not care what kind of person he was, how he scrupulously saved up money for an overcoat, how important it was to him. They thought only of themselves, and their indifference will further push the thieves to new atrocities.
In addition, the story "A Man in a Case" by A.P. Chekhov. The main character of the work is Belikov, a teacher of the Greek language. He was known throughout the city because of his "case" considerations. Belikov always tried to protect himself from everything, and he had a negative attitude to any deviations from the norm. It so happened that a new teacher was appointed to the gymnasium, who arrived with his sister, who immediately impressed everyone in the gymnasium, including Belikov. The main character walks with her, falls in love. However, the caricature in which he is depicted, and then the laughter of his beloved, very much hurt Belikov, makes a very heavy impression on him. Arriving home, he goes to bed, and a month later he dies. And in this work, we clearly see how society does not understand and does not accept the considerations of an individual person. It treats him indifferently, indifferently, which ultimately destroys the main character.
Summing up, we can say with confidence that the consequences of people's indifference are often very tragic, and this is confirmed by a huge number of examples from life and literature. Indifference is one of the worst qualities of a person, which destroys not only himself, but everyone around him.
Indifference is a terrible thing. It destroys not only those to whom they are indifferent, but also those who are indifferent, because our feelings have a huge impact on us and our destinies. It seems to me that everyone chooses for himself whether to be a cold person, or with a quivering soul: even having fully experienced the injustice of life, one can remain a merciful person, capable of compassion and good deeds. Unfortunately, the number of such people is decreasing, which is why the world is becoming hardened. This is very dangerous for humanity, because if such people disappear, goodness, sincerity and generosity will also disappear. The problem of indifference is a burning problem, and it is reflected in the pages of literature.
All literature is devoted to human feelings, one of the great thinkers even called it "human studies", and the feeling of indifference with its consequences did not pass by. The works of Konstantin Georgievich Paustovsky "Telegram" are a vivid example of this. This story clearly shows what indifference to loved ones ultimately leads to. In this case, it is Nastya's indifference to her mother, Katerina Petrovna, who is in dire need of her, her love, support, and care. But Nastya only sends money once every two or three months, not suspecting that it is not money that will be able to satisfy her most basic need. Nastya does not show real care in her letters either, she only notifies her of her deep amusement, which, in turn, was not something that was busy. About pseudo - employment is evidenced by the fact that Pershin admires the care and responsibility of Anastasia Semyonovna: it was possible not to take on the young Timofeyev, but to contribute to the "improvement" of Katerina Petrovna, rather than the artist. When the courier gives Nastya a letter broadcasting about the imminent death of her mother, she cries not about this, but from the embarrassment caused by the applause. The feeling of guilt intensifies under the mocking gaze of Gorky and, unable to bear it, she still leaves the exhibition, but too late. It's too late, because she always thinks about “overcrowded trains, changing to a narrow-gauge railway, a shaking cart, a withered garden, inevitable maternal tears, about the drab, unabated boredom of rural days,” and she’s all too lazy to go to her homeland, she is selfish, not understands how hard it is for a mother alone in Zaborie, while strangers, Manyushka and Tikhon, pity and help the old woman. Nastya does not have time for the funeral, she mourns Katerina Petrovna all night in an empty, dark room, which her life has left. This is her sentence, a sentence for inattention and indifference towards the most important person in the world.
Thus, indifference kills a person, kills his soul, faith, ability to feel. Reading such stories as "Telegram" by Konstantin Georgievich Paustovsky, I understand once again that you need to take care and love your relatives, not forget about them in the daily hustle and bustle, call, write, come to them and, of course, help them in old age.

Approbation. Final essay on the topic "Why is indifference dangerous?"
Why is indifference dangerous? Not an easy question. After all, everyone has their own opinion on this matter. Some think that indifference will not harm them in any way, while others, on the contrary, consider indifference a form of cruelty and shudder at the mention of this word. I believe that indifference is dangerous, because people who look at life with indifference are afraid of their inaction, their composure.
I would like to prove my point of view on the example of Valentin Rasputin's story "French Lessons". In this story, the protagonist had a difficult fate. He wanted to study, but numerous obstacles stood in his way, which a young French teacher helped him to overcome. The boy had anemia. And he found a way out of this situation: he began to play the game for money, which was forbidden at that time. After he won the ruble, he left the hillside and bought himself a can of milk. The teacher, having learned this, offered him help in learning French, and after the lesson she wanted to feed him dinner. But the boy had a high sense of his own dignity, and he refused to dine with her. Then the teacher found another way to participate in his fate: she began to play with him in the forbidden game for money. The end of the story is sad. The director of the school, accidentally seeing the game between the teacher and the boy, fired her from her job. What would have happened if the teacher had shown indifference? It seems to me that then this story would have ended even more sadly. First, the boy could die of malnutrition; secondly, he could have been kicked out of school, which was the worst thing for him. But how good it is that people do not remain indifferent and show mercy to others! This is exactly what a young French teacher did, forgetting about the fear of being fired from her job. She only thought about how to help the boy. And she just was not indifferent.
This is not the only literary example I can give. So the author of the poem "Anxiety" Eduard Asadov shows us that the opposite of love is not hatred, but indifference:
What should we do? What is important and what is not important?
And suddenly I opened: wait, listen!
Any boil is not at all scary,
The worst thing is indifference!
As exactly said! After all, indifference is heartlessness. And a soulless person cannot love, compassion. With his indifference, he will hurt loved ones and be dangerous to others. So the poet tells us that "while we laugh, rage, judge, we will love each other, by God, we will!" The author of the poem shows us that indifference is the most dangerous and terrible feeling for a person.
So indifference is really dangerous. Indifference can lead to complete heartlessness, and this is destructive not only for the "soulless" person, but also for those around him. Hope I was able to prove my point.
We face indifference every day. When we meet this quality in other people, we condemn them, often not noticing the flaw in ourselves.
This article will examine what indifference is, its manifestations, why and how dangerous it is.
Definition
Indifference can be viewed as a character trait and as a condition caused by external factors.
The dictionary gives the following definition of indifference - lack of interest in the world around, people, oneself. But the concept is deeper and more multifaceted.
An indifferent person can disregard himself if his condition is caused by stress, or he can be a complete egoist and cynic who cares only about his own needs. Someone shows indifference to the grief of strangers, while others injure those closest to them.
Indifference in any of its manifestations is terrible and destructive.
Indifference as a defensive reaction of the psyche
Indifference is one of the manifestations of apathy, deliberate inaction, when a person gives up, does not try to fight the circumstances. Severe nervous tension, constant stress, traumatic events lead to this state. The human brain in this way does not allow nervous exhaustion, which can lead to death.
What is indifference? This is a psychological defense. A kind of power saving mode. Prolonged stay in this state is a direct path to depression.
How to bring the taste back to life
How to get out of an apathetic state and start feeling the joy of life again, not give up in front of difficulties? If indifference is caused by overwork, rest is the best medicine. The nicer and brighter it is, the better. This method does not help in all cases.
You can cope with indifference and arouse interest in something with the help of such a psychological technique as convincing yourself otherwise. As soon as you decide to give up everything and not waste time, the principle of contradiction will work and there will be a desire to act, you will feel sorry for the effort spent.
If apathy is strong and there is simply no strength for psychological experiments, you can get out of the situation by forcing yourself to do important and urgent matters. Even by participating in the work process in the slightest degree, a person gets involved, begins to become interested, and indifference goes away.
How indifference manifests itself in various areas of life
The following types of indifference are distinguished:
- in relation to a partner;
- in relation to other people;
- in relation to work;
- in relation to children;
- in relation to public life.
Indifference is one of the problems in family life: feelings have cooled down, a habit remains, spouses move away from each other, living together by inertia. Feeling the indifference of a loved one is painful and insulting. But if there are no mutual feelings left, the best way out is parting.
Fatigue, eternal haste, prolonged stress lead to an indifferent attitude towards others, when it is not a pity for an old man begging for alms or a person who has lost consciousness on the street. An indifferent person will pass by. Such people also experience difficulties in everyday communication with colleagues and relatives. They have no close friends. Indifference, like an invisible dome, separates them from the world.
Loss of interest in work, unwillingness to improve in the profession, to fulfill their duties are manifestations of indifference. What does this attitude give a person in the end? Lack of career prospects, tensions with superiors. Not every employer is ready to tolerate a non-initiative employee who cannot cope with the task.
Parental indifference cripples the psyche of children. Without care and attention, the child becomes aggressive, lags behind in mental and mental development. Children, faced with such an attitude, adopt it, growing up to be no less indifferent than their parents.
A person who is indifferent to public life, politics, ecology, shifts his civic responsibility onto the shoulders of other people. He does not understand that such indifference degrades the quality of his life. Without declaring their rights - it is impossible to achieve improvements, allowing the destruction of nature - not to solve environmental problems.
Indifference as a character trait
An indifferent person does not at all think about the feelings of others, he does not care about any social problems. The only thing that might interest him is his own needs. It is in such people that indifference is a personality trait, a character trait. It develops in children deprived of parental love and care, faced with indifference and not seeing an example of other relationships between people.
Indifference is manifested in such people:
- lack of empathy
- prudence,
- cynicism,
- lack of involvement even in meaningful relationships.
An indifferent person, passing by the committed crime, will always justify himself by the fact that there is a police to solve such problems, and he did nothing wrong.
Point of indifference. What it is?
An interesting fact: the term "indifference" is used not only in psychology, but also in economics. The concept of "point of indifference" implies a combination of production factors of an enterprise and the volume of products it produces, in which an increase in one of the factors entails an increase in costs equal to an increase in income from an increase in production volume due to an increase in the mentioned factor.
