Do you want to offer your child new and interesting entertainment? Looking for original ideas? It is enough just to make a do-it-yourself shadow theater at home. You don't need any special equipment and materials. All tools are available. Such an activity will captivate the child so much that you can turn him into a creative, developing process.
The principle of organizing the show
Shadow theater is one of the most ancient. Previously, it was available only to the rich, as puppet puppets were created from expensive materials. Subsequently, this entertainment became an exciting children's game. Do-it-yourself shadow theater at home is easy to do. You will need the following:
- Screen made of white translucent fabric.
- Directional lamp (ordinary table lamp).
- Objects that will act as artists.
- Scenery.
The screen is hung or placed between the audience and the light source. Figures that cast shadows are placed between the screen and the lamp. The closer the characters are to the light source, the larger they become on the "stage". It is important that your silhouettes do not end up in the beams of the flashlight, otherwise they will also appear on the screen.
The objects with the help of which the performance is played out can be figures assembled from objects made of paper and other materials, moving people. In the latter case, more space will be required to organize the theater. In the first and second versions, the plane of the table is sufficient.
Your hands are the best artists (schematics)
If the child you are going to entertain is still small, it is enough to use your own palms. This is the easiest way to make your own shadow theater. Finger weave patterns are shown below.
First of all, you will have to practice folding your arms yourself. You can use static shapes that will move along the stage. When this stage is mastered, move on to dynamic characters. Wiggle your fingers, and the ears of the bunny will move, the mouth of the wolf will open, and the bird will fly, flapping its wings.
If the kid was impressed by the action and wanted to try himself as a director and stage director, motivate him, inspire him, praise him for everything he will do. This is a very useful developmental activity, as it improves the motor skills of the fingers. If initially not everything will work out for the baby, do not be discouraged. Gradually he will master this technique. Then you can move on to more complex performances with puppets and decorations.
The main characters with their own hands
When finger theater is mastered, start making characters from scrap materials. You will need the following:
- paper or cardboard;
- pencil;
- knife or scissors;
- glue;
- stencils, fabric (optional).
There are two ways to make figurines:
- on sticks;
- on flat bases.
The first option is more convenient because those who will hold them can be at a distance from them.
It is important that no shadows fall on the screen from the players themselves. In the second case, when the figures are rearranged, the player's hands are visible. However, this option also has the advantage that the figures can be placed and are in a static state without human intervention (they do not need to be held). At this time, another character will move between the standing figures. It is convenient, for example, to build decorations (trees, houses).
Once you have decided on the design of the figures, start creating their shapes. They are easiest to cut out of paper. Sticks are good for cocktail sticks. Forms can be made solid or openwork, as well as add fabric decor.
If you need to make many of the same objects, it is easier to use stencils, that is, make one shape, and then circle them the required number of times. If you have kids stencils for creativity or any other, use them. They are convenient, as they are thematic, for example, based on fairy tales. With their help, you can easily and quickly make all the characters. You don't need to draw characters yourself or look for examples of illustrations. Nowadays it is easy to make figurines by printing images on a printer and cutting them along the contour.
Making decorations
In addition to figurines, you can make objects that will create the atmosphere of a particular scene. In this case, do-it-yourself shadow theater takes longer, but it looks more varied and interesting. It is worth remembering that children are fascinated not only by the production itself, but also by participation in the preparation of the performance.
The original idea of creating the scenery and the characters themselves is presented in the photo above. Drawing characters and decorations on (a sheet of paper) with black paint is the performance itself. To do this, of course, you need to be able to hold a brush in your hands. The contours of objects can be outlined with thin lines in advance.
Children want to be artists too
Children can create a shadow theater with their own hands, even without the participation of adults. You will be spectators of an impromptu performance. Hang the sheet on the frame, install the light. Let the children play different movements, imagine themselves
Performance ideas
With the help of such entertainment, you can have an interesting time with friends and their children. Have a joint show. If you decide to make a collective shadow theater with your own hands, the fairy tale that will form the basis of the script must be chosen in advance. In this case, everyone will receive a task, which heroes he must make. Such a creative process will be very exciting and will please everyone.
You saw that it is not difficult to do shadow theater with your own hands. All materials are available and the process of creating a performance is just as interesting as watching the action. This exciting activity will help keep your little one entertained at home and have fun.
There are many options for interesting leisure activities that you can organize for your little ones yourself. Of course, the most interesting ones are in which toddlers can take a direct part. These options for fun include shadow theater for children, which you can do with your own hands at home at no special cost.
How to surprise your baby with shadow?The simplest version of playing with a child is to show on the wall shadows from the hands, with which you can depict various objects, animals or people. How to make such a shadow theater with your own hands at home - various manuals on the art of creating an image will help you figure it out. For children, do-it-yourself shadow theater templates are simple figures, examples of which are presented below:
You can make shadow shapes with your hands both on the wall and on a small screen. To do this, you need to make a rectangle out of the boards and stretch a translucent light fabric without a pattern over it. It is recommended to fix it using buttons or a furniture stapler. After that, you can start the performance: the screen is placed on the surface of the table or on a specially prepared stand, the bottom is covered with a thick cloth, the lamp is installed behind the actors, and the light is directed onto the screen. To make the baby more interesting, you can add various decorations and dolls to the images of the figures.
Shadow puppet theaterIn order to make a shadow theater with characters at home with your own hands, you will need a simple set of stationery. It includes: thick cardboard, glue, scissors, thin light sticks. For a start, it is proposed to use puppets that do not move in productions. This will make it easier to learn this exquisite skill, and it will take hours to create characters. Figures for shadow theater are made by hand using templates with images. You can draw them yourself, or you can use ready-made ones. Then they are transferred to paper, cut out and assembled with glue or a stapler. Depending on what role the doll has, it can stick to the stick either from the side or from the bottom.
Making a shadow theater with your own hands out of paper is not troublesome, but very exciting. The kids will be happy to help make dolls, and after that they will stage their favorite fairy tales, and the spectators who come to visit will discuss this spectacle for a long time.

Take your time: make a shadow theater for children with your own hands - you will find stencils for the first performances and useful practical tips in our article.
Where does shadow theater come from?
The art of shadow performances originated in Asia about 1,700 years ago. It is difficult to name the exact place, but traditionally China is considered it, where to this day they honor a beautiful legend about the emergence of the first shadow theater:
Once, one of the ancient Chinese emperors had a grief - a serious illness took the life of his beloved wife. The widower was inconsolable. Forgetting about state affairs, he retired in his chambers, refused to talk with his family. Deprived of a powerful hand, a mighty empire risked falling into decay.
The situation was saved by a clever courtier, who once called the emperor to the chambers of his deceased wife to show her silhouette behind the curtain. The shocked ruler silently watched the shadow of his beloved move behind the thin screen. Such performances became a nightly tradition and gradually the emperor's melancholy let go, because he understood: death is like this thin tissue barrier, it only temporarily separated him from his beloved, and they will meet again in another life.
History is silent about the fate of the courtier, who created the first shadow theater with his own hands. But it is known for certain that such ideas quickly became popular in all social circles, and their geography for several centuries covered the whole of China, India, Turkey, and a little later Europe and Russia.
The theater of shadows has come down to our times practically unchanged: the setting of light and the mobility of graceful silhouettes are still the same. But if now it is easy to find and print simple stencils for home performances, then previously selected masters were engaged in making dolls. They made donkey skins with their own hands, from which they cut out figures. The dolls were decorated with fine painting, worked out to the smallest detail.
The puppets for the shadow theater did not differ in height, usually their height was about 30 cm. However, the complexity of the performances is striking: in one performance, up to 1000 figures were involved, controlled by puppeteers with the help of long rods. The play of light and shadow, the movement of silhouettes to music and an exciting plot: for children and adults all over the world, shadow theater remains a favorite art form. It is easy to join the beauty by printing stencils and making shadow theater with your own hands.
Benefits of shadow theater for children
The brightness and dynamics of the scenery of the shadow theater have a positive effect on the psyche of the child. But the joy of participating in the performance is far from the only plus of shadow stops, there are several more important points for the overall development:
- The very atmosphere necessary for the show of shadow theater relaxes and adjusts for intimate communication. Twilight and the expectation of a certain sacrament - this is so similar to the gatherings around the fire, which are remembered by many;
- The heroes of the performances have a conditional appearance, only the silhouette is determined. To understand the full picture of what is happening, you need to use your imagination;
- Shadow theater gives the child a chance to try himself in a new role, stimulates the craving for self-expression and simplifies social adaptation;
- The need to memorize the plot and lines trains attention and concentration. For children, participation in shadow theater performances will be a good way to replenish vocabulary, develop speech;
- Puppet control stimulates fine motor skills, teaches to coordinate hand movements.
Of course, you should not immediately demand a lot from the kids. At first, let them master the skill of role-playing, without a plot. Let the kids play with the stenciled figurines and learn how to control and voice them. Perhaps, soon the children will have their favorite characters, which will give a new impetus to their imagination - it is always more interesting to come up with stories for impressive heroes.
Essentially, a shadow theater is a properly lit cloth screen and a set of figurines. The screen is easy to make with your own hands:
- Cut a wide rectangular frame from thick cardboard;
- Take a piece of thin white fabric, cut out a rectangle that exactly matches the outer edges of the frame;
- Gently stick the fabric onto the cardboard, avoiding wrinkles. The screen should be well taut. You can use ordinary PVA glue or Moment.
A thick curtain can be attached to the front of the screen to open and close it, just like in a real theater. It is important that the curtain fabric glides freely, so use a smooth synthetic cord as an attachment.
Think in advance where exactly in your house it is best to place the shadow theater in order to be able to correctly place the light. The light source should be located above and behind the screen, then only the silhouettes of the dolls will be visible on the fabric, and the puppeteer himself will remain hidden from view.
The most crucial moment is working with stencils. To make them you will need:
- Thin cardboard;
- Paper or plastic tubes (can be replaced with long wooden skewers);
- Sheets of black paper;
- Glue gun;
- Scissors.
With some artistic skills, you can independently draw the silhouettes of the desired characters, but it is much easier and faster to use ready-made stencils. You might like our selection.
So, let's start making figurines:
Do not forget to take into account on which side of the screen this or that character will appear in the course of the action, so that the figure is turned by the profile in the desired direction.
Take care of creating the scenery - stencils for trees, houses, fences, etc. will come in handy here. The decorations are tightly attached directly to the frame, for which an elastic band is pulled along its inner side - it presses the stencil holders during the performance. If you need to increase the size of the shadow, move the doll away from the screen and the silhouette will become larger, but will lose clarity.
Do not exclude children from preparing the props - working with stencils will only whet their interest. At the same time, tell us about the history of this unusual art form. Having made a shadow theater for children with your own hands, do not rush to throw away the stencils, they will still be useful to you. Fold the blanks in a paper envelope and rather invite all the household members to an exciting performance.
On my own behalf, I will add that I used this model to make a theater with my grandchildren. Happiness was a wagon and a small cart !!! All five grandchildren and granddaughters with great diligence carved the figures, painted, glued .......
And then they all showed and watched together.
Below is a master class and ready-made templates for the most famous children's fairy tales .....
FROM THE AUTHOR: "The room is dark and only small rustles of the last preparations are heard, when suddenly the light comes on. It rests against the screen of a white sheet. Dad clears his throat for the last time, and the first silhouette appears on the stage. And the fairy tale comes to life ...
Shadow theater“Children fall in love with shadow theater right away. First, they watch the performances with enthusiasm, and then they begin to invent the plot themselves. Let, regardless of whether the child has directing abilities or not, there will always be a standing ovation at home.
At the same time, the imagination of the crumbs works 100%, because in the silhouette the child will try to guess the grandmother, dog or mouse. A gentle and dear voice from behind the curtains tells a story about distant (or not so) countries, about children and animals, about good, evil and about real magic. And all this can be done with your own hands from improvised means in just 15 minutes.
You can organize a stage for a shadow theater from an old box and cut out the silhouettes of the main characters from it, turn on the lamp and the fairy tale will come to life right before your eyes. So let's get started.
1. Making the scene
Draw a rectangle for the screen at the bottom of the old box.
The outline does not have to be rectangular. You can round the edges and add decorative patterns. Thus, the box for the shadow theater will take on an absolutely magical look.
Cut out a hole.
We paint this leaky box (the item is optional, but it will look neater this way).
From the inside we glue a sheet of paper that is slightly larger in size than the hole.
2. Hero on a stick
Draw fairy tale characters on a sheet, or better print

We cut out the characters, glue them onto cardboard of any density. Cut out the silhouettes and fix them on a stick. For this, duct tape, glue gun or scotch tape are suitable. I used duct tape and a glue gun to be sure)
I used culinary skewers, but popsicle sticks, old sticks or pencils are also good for this.
We are also preparing the scenery (the environment surrounding the heroes). To do this, simply cut them out of cardboard of any density. The thicker the decorations are, the more difficult it will be to cut them out, and the easier it will be to fix them at the screen.
fixing decorations
You can fix strips of cardboard around the perimeter, in which it will be convenient to fix the scenery. That's it, the stage for the theater of shadows is ready.
bottom hole
The further the characters are from the screen, the more blurry their silhouettes appear. To maintain the stability of the scene, but still have backstage access, I made a hole in the support wall. Thus, the heroes have become closer to the screen, and it has become easier to control them.
