The idea of the School was born at the turn of 1980-1990, when it became clear that the existing system economic education in the country does not meet the requirements of the new political and economic situation. Then a group of teachers from the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University, after several attempts to introduce the foundations of “normal” economic theory into the curricula of existing universities, realized the need to build a new economic school, which from the very beginning would be based on the principles of world economic science. This meant providing students with tools for analyzing and forecasting real processes, teaching them to work with statistics and economic models, and giving them a common language with the global community of professional economists.
The first real attempt to create a School can be considered the alternative departments of economic theory, organized at MIPT (1989-1990) and at the physics and history departments of Moscow State University (1990-1991). Students could choose between courses taught by young teachers, recent graduates of the economics department, and traditional political economy. Many of those who later formed the backbone of HSE went through the school of these departments. There, the methodology for teaching economic theory in a country with a transition economy was worked out. The start of a new business was facilitated by the support of the Soros Foundation, which provided a one-year grant in 1989.
The starting period was marked by intensive “training of teachers”: R. Entov taught the entire team of teachers - mostly former employees of academic institutes and Moscow State University - a course on key problems of economic theory, and updated their knowledge of mathematics. Since 1993, HSE teachers have regularly undergone internships at leading European universities.
The principle of the School from the first day of its existence is a combination of strict, even brutal training with discussion and solution of pressing problems of the Russian economy. Leading economists who worked in the Government - S. Vasiliev, V. Baranov - became HSE professors.
Since 1995, HSE began to transform into a university where, along with economists, they train sociologists, managers and lawyers. Effective research and teaching teams began to form around those who came to the School and other leading teachers.
At the same time, a system of HSE research centers is being created, focused on applied research on orders from the Ministry of Economy, the Central Bank, the Ministry of Education and Science, commercial enterprises and banks.
By this time, we can say that the principles of the School had been formed and established: reliance on the requirements of world economic and social science; interdisciplinary interaction (economists receive a legal education, and vice versa); direct connection between teaching and the practice of reforms, with the results of applied research; educational mission in the educational community of Russia, in its regions.
Political activity is prohibited at the School. Educators have the right to draw any conclusions, defend socialist, Keynesian or liberal principles, if their arguments are based on modern theoretical analysis of factors.
In 1996, the Higher School of Economics had its first one. The following year, the School's campuses opened in and.
Traditions
Crow
The crow has been considered a symbol of the Higher School of Economics for many years. It was invented by artist Anna Arenshtein, who illustrated a new information booklet about HSE in 1996. Now the crow can be found on any HSE souvenir products; it has also become a symbol of the university’s annual awards.
In 1997, the university became one of the first Russian universities to successfully introduce the so-called “double degree program” on Russian soil (several years before the start of the Bologna process). The Higher School of Economics and one of the leaders in economic education in the world, the London School of Economics (LSE), created. Creation of ICEF Bachelor's and Master's Degrees international level became possible thanks to the financial support provided by the largest banks, companies and financial institutions: VTB24, Vneshtorgbank, Sberbank. The programs began to be taught in English from the first year, and graduates receive two diplomas at once.
In 2000, the university got its own, which began to specialize in the production of scientific, educational and reference literature on the core disciplines of the university: economics, management, sociology, political science, psychology, law and others. To date, the HSE Publishing House has published more than 1,500 publications, of which 100 are translated. The “Textbooks of the Higher School of Economics” series, founded in 2003, includes more than 50 book titles with a total circulation of over 170 thousand copies.
In the same year, the first April Festival took place, which has since become the most notable academic event in the country. Every year, in addition to researchers from Russia and abroad, it is attended by heads of the Government of the Russian Federation and the Administration of the President of Russia, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Organization economic cooperation and development, heads of the largest Russian and foreign companies.
Traditions
Golden Tower
At the end of 2010 - beginning of 2011, work began at the Higher School of Economics, jointly led by well-known foreign researchers and leading scientists of the university. This became part of the university’s development strategy to create and develop scientific, teaching and personnel potential.
In 2011, by order of the Government of the Russian Federation, the Higher School of Economics (MIEM), the Educational Center for the Training of Managers (Kochubey Center) and the State Academy of Investment Specialists were merged into the Higher School of Economics.
In 2011, work began on the creation of the Concept of socio-economic development of Russia until 2020. Strategy 2020, commissioned by the Government of the Russian Federation, was prepared by more than a thousand experts. Their work was coordinated by the National Research University Higher School of Economics and the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, which became the main venues for expert hearings, seminars and discussions. 21 expert groups were organized on various aspects of social and economic policy, the main work in groups took place during 2011, but certain provisions of the strategy were adjusted by experts in 2012.
In the same year, the Higher School of Economics began its work as an autonomous institution. It was headed by Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Zhukov. In 2014 and 2016, the composition of the Supervisory Board was updated; it was headed by the First Deputy Head of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin and the First Deputy Head of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation Sergei Kiriyenko.
Traditions
HSE Day
Timed to coincide with HSE’s 20th anniversary in 2012, this holiday for the first time combined Freshmen’s Day, a reunion of alumni, and open days of various HSE faculties. And since the entire event was held outdoors in Gorky Park, HSE Day became a truly urban holiday, open to everyone.
In 2013, HSE was one of the 15 winners of the competitive selection of universities for the right to receive a special subsidy for the implementation of activities that will help promote universities in international rankings (Project 5-100).
In the same year, the Higher School of Economics began its cooperation with the international educational platform Coursera. Over the course of the year, more than 350,000 people from 190 different countries enrolled in HSE courses, and in May 2017, the number of students taking HSE online courses on Coursera reached 1 million users.
In September 2013, the university appeared as part of the university, which became the first educational institution in Moscow operating according to the new educational standard. Already in 2016, the HSE Lyceum entered the TOP 10 best schools in the country, and in 2017 it topped the rating of schools’ contribution to the quality education of Moscow schoolchildren. In 2018, the Lyceum enrolled 9th graders for the first time.
Traditions
High school graduation
The youngest of HSE’s traditions, the number of graduates of which is growing more and more. To bring together all the graduates of 2013, it took one of the largest venues in Moscow - Luzhniki.
The Higher School of Economics is a university that trains economists, sociologists, managers and lawyers and conducts active international research activities. Philosophy, mathematics, literary history, journalism, psychology, sociology and even design are taught here. Under the roof of this modern, authoritative university, the leaders of Russian scientific schools, brilliant teachers gathered, from whom it is interesting and promising to study.
Features of the educational process:
During your undergraduate studies, you can study more than 30 different disciplines. Their selection depends on the content of the specific educational program and the choice of the student himself. Curricula are drawn up in such a way that a student studies no more than five disciplines at a time (excluding foreign languages and physical education). In the first and second years, the classroom load and independent work make up approximately equal shares. In the third and fourth years, the student is offered more independent work.
Academic year is divided not into semesters, but into modules. There are 4 modules in a year - thus, the duration of a module is approximately equal to a school quarter. After each module there comes a week of session, during which, depending on the working curriculum, tests and exams may be held, or nothing may be carried out - in the latter case, this week turns into an unofficial vacation.
HSE has more than 100 student organizations, thousands of events, and its own student government. Student life at the university is almost impossible to describe: too dynamic, diverse and different for everyone. The only way to know it is to become a part of it.
Greetings to HSE applicants:

The Higher School of Economics was created by Decree of the Russian Government on November 27, 1992, initially as a center for training masters.
The starting period was marked by intensive “training of teachers”: R. Entov taught the entire team of teachers - mostly former employees of academic institutes and Moscow State University - a course on key problems of economic theory, and G. Kantorovich updated their knowledge of mathematics. Since 1993, HSE teachers have regularly undergone internships at leading European universities.
The principle of the School from the first day of its existence is a combination of strict, even brutal training with discussion and solution of pressing problems of the Russian economy. Leading economists who worked in the Government - E. Yasin, A. Shokhin, S. Vasiliev, Y. Urinson, V. Kossov, E. Gavrilenkov, M. Kopeikin, V. Baranov - became HSE professors.
Since 1995, HSE began to transform into a university where, along with economists, they train sociologists, managers and lawyers. Effective scientific and pedagogical teams began to form around O. Shkaratan, L. Ionin, S. Filonovich and other leading teachers who came to the School.
At the same time, a system of HSE research centers is being created, focused on applied research on orders from the Ministry of Economy, the Central Bank, the Ministry of Education and Science, commercial enterprises and banks.
In 2015, HSE National Research University entered the “51-100” group of the QS ranking in the area of development studies (social development studies). In this ranking category, the Higher School of Economics became the only Russian university. HSE also turned out to be the only Russian university that was ranked in such subject groups as “economics and econometrics” and “sociology” (group 151-200). The fourth area of the ranking that the Higher School of Economics was included in was philosophy (group 151-200).

After receiving my diploma and Unified State Exam scores, I chose the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Faculty of Sociology. It was easy to do. First, you submit the necessary documents to the admissions committee, then wait for the admission results. It should be noted that while submitting documents, I had to wait about an hour because the queue was huge. But I am glad that the admissions committee works quickly and smoothly. Everything was simple: it was indicated where to go, what to take, when to wait your turn. Next, the list is posted on the university website...

About HSE
The Higher School of Economics was founded in 1992 in Moscow. In 2009, it received the status of a National Research University. This is a public educational institution. Currently, the rector of the National Research University Higher School of Economics is Y.I. Kuzminov. Since 1993, the university has used a two-level (Bologna) education system: bachelor's degree - 4 years, master's degree - 2 years.
Education
The university uses a modular education system. The academic year is divided into 4 modules rather than regular semesters. This division makes it possible to distribute the academic load among students more evenly and thereby ensure consistency of student efforts throughout the year. Assessment of academic performance consists of several components, i.e. A cumulative system is used, thanks to which students’ knowledge is assessed more objectively.
An annual rating of teachers and students is also carried out. Based on student assessments, ratings are created, according to which a discount of up to 70% of the cost of tuition can be calculated for students receiving education on a paid basis. Many HSE students receive several scholarships, the amount of which can reach up to 30,000 rubles.
Economics occupies the main place in the educational process of the National Research University Higher School of Economics. At all faculties, students receive knowledge in microeconomics, macroeconomics and institutional economics. They also attend lectures on applied economic subjects according to their chosen specialization. Each of the faculties has subjects related to social knowledge (philosophy, sociology, logic, psychology and others). Foreign languages also occupy one of the leading places at HSE - some subjects are taught in English.
In the learning process, the resources of electronic libraries are widely used. HSE University is subscribed to 39 electronic library databases, which provide access to the full text of 53,000 scientific journals.
The university successfully implements double degree programs and so-called “cross” education, as well as student exchange programs. HSE has more than 160 foreign partners, which makes it possible for graduates to receive diplomas from various European universities. Every year, more than 600 programs are carried out at the Higher School of Economics. additional education, including business education, second higher education, MBA, EMBA and DBA. In order to develop additional education and professional retraining, in 2012, the GASIS Academy and the Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM) joined the Higher School of Economics.
Employment
A large number of senior university students gain work experience in their chosen specialty during their student years.
At the time of receiving their diploma, about 60% of students already have a future job. 6 months after graduating from the National Research University Higher School of Economics, about 80% of graduates work, and the remaining 20% of students continue to receive education in master's or postgraduate studies directly in Russia or abroad.
According to statistics from the HSE Internal Monitoring Center, graduates are employed in such fields as marketing, advertising, PR, business, consulting, insurance, education, accounting, finance, trade, press and journalism, energy, telecommunications, IT.
University structure
The following activities are carried out at the Higher School of Economics:
- 107 research institutes and centers,
- 32 design-educational and scientific-educational laboratories,
- 4 campuses in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Perm, Nizhny Novgorod.
The university is one of the few educational institutions where, after the military reform, a military department remained. Future officers for missile and ground forces units are trained here. Students undergo drill, tactical and tactical-special fire training. Information and educational work with students and moral and psychological support were also organized. Practical training is carried out with future officers. Undergraduate and postgraduate students of the National Research University Higher School of Economics are provided with places to live in the dormitory.
HSE has a faculty of pre-university preparation. Schoolchildren in grades 5-11 are trained at this faculty. Teachers from the National Research University Higher School of Economics prepare them for the Unified State Exam, Olympiads, and State Examinations. In 2013, a lyceum for high school students was opened.
Program “University open to the city”
In 2013, the university launched the “University Open to the City” program. In Moscow's Gorky Park this summer, university scientists began holding lectures in public for the first time. Thus, anyone who is interested in the topic can listen to the lecture. In the fall, the lecture hall moved to Moscow museums. Lectures are now held every Thursday, admission is absolutely free and free.
Higher in ratings
In 2015, the Higher School of Economics joined the group<51-100>in the field of Development studies (social development studies) of the QS ranking (Quacquarelli Symonds) - one of the most famous international rankings of universities in the world. In this rating category, the Higher School of Economics is the only Russian university.
The full name of the educational institution is National Research University Higher School of Economics, abbreviated as HSE. Unofficial name - the result of student folk art- “Tower”.
This university is among the top 5 best universities in the country and is rightly considered the most progressive and prestigious among the capital’s institutions.
General information about the National Research University "Higher School of Economics"
The university operates on a budgetary-commercial basis: the institution receives government subsidies and income from its own scientific projects, contract students and from third-party sponsors and organizations. Such multi-channel injections into the university budget enable the institution’s management to constantly improve the material and technical base of HSE and the very quality of education.
The National Research University Higher School of Economics operates 128 research centers, 36 scientific and design laboratories, 32 international laboratories led by foreign researchers. HSE conducts the most intensive international activities among capital universities, cooperates with 298 foreign partners, and has 41 double degree programs with foreign universities.
It is noteworthy that from the very day of its foundation the institution has been headed by a permanent rector - Ya. I. Kuzminov.
“We study not for school, but for life” is the motto of the Higher School of Economics.
History of University
The Higher School of Economics cannot boast of a turbulent history. The first brick of this European-oriented university was not laid by Peter I himself, and its corridors were not trampled by Lomonosov or Nietzsche.
This is a relatively young, but very intensively developing, progressive university. If educational institutions were identified with cities, then HSE would be Singapore or Hong Kong.
So, the school was opened for students from November 17, 1992. Already in 2009, this university received the title of National Research University on a competitive basis.
Faculty of Law. We can safely say that this faculty prepares the best lawyers of Russian modern times. This is not unreasonable, because the university itself was created not without the participation of the administrative and ruling elite. It is important to note that students are taught material with a huge emphasis on practice. Invite specialists from government agencies, practicing lawyers, etc.
Faculty of Humanities. This faculty cannot be called specialized for HSE; reviews from experts also note that humanities students are trained here with the understanding that their specialization is a priori inferior to that of computer scientists or economists. But the faculty has the strongest school of foreign languages. Also, most lectures are public and optional for students of other specialties. Every student who wants to broaden their horizons can come to cultural studies, philosophy and additional courses in foreign languages.
Faculty of Communications, Media and Design. This faculty is the domain of female students; there are even fewer males here than in the pedagogical institute. Apparently, the laurels of Anna Wintour or Carrie Bradshaw no longer give rest to the fair sex. But seriously, the faculty trains not only journalists, but rather full-fledged specialists for media communications with an emphasis on working in the Internet environment, PR companies, and design institutions.
Faculty of Economic Sciences- the most specialized and largest faculty. Student reviews of economics and statistics at HSE as a field of study sound rather ambiguous. Allegedly, the academic workload among students is borderline unbearable. But cooperation with global transnational corporations and universities, which is available at this faculty, gives students access to unique knowledge and the opportunity for unlimited development and successful employment anywhere in the world. Future Henry Fords and Adam Smiths are produced here. Let us lower our eyes to the fact that the well-known S. Mavrodi successfully studied here.
International Institute of Economics and Finance (ICEF)
This faculty should definitely be discussed separately. This is a diamond among pearls. A unique educational institution in the CIS. To create it back in 1997, the National Research University Higher School of Economics and the London School of Economics (one of the three leaders in economic education in the world) joined forces. And it turned out to be such a grandiose creation. Graduates of the institute receive both candy and ice cream - a diploma from the Higher School of Economics and a diploma from the London School of Economics.
The competition is merciless, and the workload at the faculty is impressive. From the very first day of school, all training is conducted in English. Budget places only for winners All-Russian Olympiad. Enthusiastic reviews of international relations at HSE only fuel public interest in this university. Students spend a third of their course in London, absorbing all the practical knowledge that the experience of such an education can give. The excitement around admission to this faculty is enormous; even the tuition fee of 600 thousand rubles per year does not stop applicants.
If you don’t have the courage and finances to study at ICEF, you can get a bachelor’s degree at another faculty and enroll in a master’s program through a double degree program. HSE has 40 such programs.
Features of studying at HSE
There are a large number of educational features at the Higher School of Economics. Reviews from students note that studying at this university is completely different from standard education in our country. But this is easy to explain - the university greedily absorbs the experience of successful global educational institutions. And if we pay attention to the success of HSE graduates, it would also do well for other national universities to broaden their views on teaching and not turn away from successful world experience.
The Higher School of Economics became one of the first national universities to switch to a 4+2 curriculum (bachelor's, master's). The academic year is divided not into semesters, but into modules, there are four of them, and at the end of each, students receive certification. The sum of the module grades determines the annual grade.
The grading system is ten-point, in the European style.
In the tactics of constructing the educational process, an orientation towards success is visible. Students are immediately trained to be confident, competitive and highly motivated. The university has a rating system. Reviews from HSE students about these same ratings are full of devilish smiley faces, but even dissatisfied, tired students admit that nothing motivates as much as this very rating risk.
So what's the big deal? It's simple. Contractors with high ratings receive discounts or are transferred to the budget. State employees with a high rating retain their stipend, those with an average rating lose their stipend, and those with a low rating are transferred to a contract. This encourages students to be active, study non-stop, and get used to the conditions of a highly competitive environment.
There is no such subject as “Physical Education” at the university. There is a gym, various sections, courses, etc. Please develop yourself, take care of your health and physical condition. But this is a matter of choice.
Positive feedback from students about HSE
The only thing more subjective than the opinions of students is the opinion of children. Often reviews from HSE students are based on personal success or failure in the learning process. But quite a few young people dare to express their opinion about HSE objectively and rationally.
A huge plus for the university - for this circumstance alone, it needs to erect a monument in the form of a happy student - there is practically no corruption at HSE. This is noted by most students. Either the reason is the intensive funding of the university’s activities by sponsors, or loyalty to the principles of “European transparency,” but students agree that it is very possible to obtain a diploma with knowledge alone.
The quality of knowledge, lectures and training of teachers varies among different faculties. If we analyze reviews of HSE in Moscow, students agree that the quality of teaching in the humanities and political science fields is slightly behind.
Not a single review can describe the quality of education as eloquently as the statistics on employment by profile after graduating from this university: 94% of graduates found a suitable job. This is despite the fact that 48% found a warm corporate job even before receiving their diploma. Leading companies send their recruits to prestigious universities to scout for valuable talent while they are still in college.
What negative aspects of studying at HSE do students most often mention in their reviews?
Most of all, students complain about the workload and the need to gain knowledge in conditions of constant competition. We can endlessly discuss whether it is possible to pit students who were children just yesterday against each other. But the HSE management has made a choice, and the rating system is not going to be abolished.
Students are also indignant about the Anti-Plagiarism system. There is a university program where every work is checked. In the text, only 20% citations are allowed with an exact indication of the source. Everything else is the author’s personal judgments, conclusions, etc. Naturally, this greatly increases the time for preparing essays and coursework for students.
Dormitories of the Higher School of Economics
HSE buildings are scattered throughout the city, as are the dormitories. Today the Higher School of Economics operates 9 dormitories. Reviews about HSE dormitories are mostly positive, but extremely ironic. The whole humor is that they are located in the Moscow region, and the road from their place of residence to the academic building is an inexhaustible ground for student jokes. If we put this inconvenience aside, the rest of the HSE dormitories are made “for the people.” They are apartment type, they have all the amenities. There is one in Moscow. It is cheaper and closer, but is suitable only for residents who are unpretentious in terms of comfort.
All dormitories have free wireless Internet with access at any time of the day.
The atmosphere in the hostel is upbeat, productive and motivating. HSE did an elementally brilliant thing, they paid tribute to the desire of every person for everyday comfort. They made modern classrooms and dormitories for students, and they don’t worry about storing water in basins, washing their hair at the sink, etc. They care about acquiring knowledge and self-development.
Master's programs at HSE: student reviews, master's programs
Documents are accepted in electronic form. After approval of the electronic application, the originals can be brought to the admissions office or sent by mail.
All applicants undergo a competition in the form of entrance exams (most often economics + English language+ mathematics, but disciplines vary depending on the faculty).
The enrollment order is issued somewhere in mid-August, two weeks before the start of lectures.
Master's programs at HSE look very attractive. Almost all of them are bilateral and provide students with the opportunity to obtain double diplomas and gain a unique learning experience at Today, HSE cooperates with the universities of Humboldt in Berlin, Pantheon-Sorbonne in Paris, Mason in New York, with 10 universities in Britain, including the London School of Political Science, and also higher institutions in Canada, USA, Luxembourg, Finland, etc.
