A little about the history of fabric painting. Since ancient times, hand-painted fabric - batik - has been known in Japan, China, Egypt and Africa, but this art reached amazing artistic perfection and originality in Java.
v The real flowering of this art was in China. After all, it was the Chinese who gave the world perhaps the most ideal material for painting - silk.
In Japan and China, painting was also used to create interiors traditional for these countries: screens and paintings full of poetic associations. The masters used ink of just one color, creating amazing beauty landscapes. Translated into Japanese, batik sounds like "rokechi". Used for painting fabric for screens and clothing.
In the Middle Ages, designs were applied to fabric either with brushes or using a wooden stamp. The first method was very labor-intensive and time-consuming. From manual technology, the technique of knotted fabric dyeing, the so-called bandhana, is widely known, in which the pattern appears to be made up of small uneven spots. Images of people wearing clothes decorated with such dotted patterns can be seen in sculptures, reliefs and frescoes of ancient Hindu temples.
The first Europeans who began to use batik in the manufacture of decorative fabrics in the first half of the 19th century were the Dutch.
. At the beginning of the 17th century, the Dutch colonized Indonesia. It was they who introduced batik in Holland, from where the fashion spread throughout Europe.
. Soon the Germans begin production of batik and put it on stream, thereby preserving the established technological processes for making batik in Europe. Today, it is the Germans who are doing everything possible to popularize and promote this wonderful art.

Hot batik: Hot batik is one of the varieties of batik. The pattern is created using melted wax or other similar substances. By dyeing the fabric and removing the wax, we get a white or multi-colored design on a colored background. The wax is applied using a special tool called a chanting. Cold and hot batik are based on the use of reserve compounds that limit the spread of paint over the canvas.
Cold batik: Cold batik is one of the varieties of batik. This technique of painting on fabric uses a special reserve (which limits the spread of paint on the fabric) cold composition, in contrast to the hot batik technique. In the cold batik technique, aniline-based dyes are used. In this case, a special material plays the role of a reserve. There are both colored and colorless reserves.
In the cold batik technique, aniline-based dyes are used. In this case, a special material plays the role of a reserve. There are both colored and colorless reserves.
Free painting of fabric Free painting is performed without the use of reserve mixtures, however, at the beginning or at the end, if necessary, reserve treatment can be used.
There are several known ways to freely paint fabric: with paints using saline solution; thickened paints from the reserve; printing inks; on fabrics coated with thickeners; oil paints. All of the above methods of free painting require steaming, except for painting with oil paints.
Painting fabric using saline solution. The fabric is soaked in a solution of kitchen salt, and after drying, it is painted with paints for cold and hot batik, or the salt solution is introduced into the paint and painted with it (it is recommended to introduce a salt solution into the paint only for the class of basic dyes). It is recommended to paint with all other dyes on fabric soaked in saline solution. Salt limits the spread of paint on the fabric and makes it possible to make drawings with free strokes (free painting). This painting can be combined with cold batik painting.
Technique (“bandan”) Knotted batik (“bandan”) technique. One of its types, the “plangi” technique, was widespread in India. The unpainted canvas was covered according to the pattern with very small knots, tightly tied with thread. Then the fabric was dyed and the threads were removed, resulting in a pattern of white “Peas”. If necessary, the fabric could be dyed in this manner several times, removing old knots and adding new ones. The dressing threads were removed from the dried fabric, but the finished product was not ironed, due to which the “crunchiness” effect was maintained for a long time.
