Indeed, the work of Maxim Gorky "Old Woman Izergil" romantic piece.
Romanticism, as an artistic style, prevailed in the first third of the 19th century. In this style worked Byron, Delacroix, Gericault, in Russia Venetsianov, Lermontov, Pushkin. The main features of the style: acute confrontation between Good and Evil, confrontation between the ideal hero and society, heroics of protest, motives of "world evil", "world sorrow". Artists and writers strove to portray the hero's inner world, emotional experiences. "
By the middle of the 19th century, romanticism was replaced by realism, but many elements of romantic ideology can be traced throughout the entire 19th century and even the 20th. Aivazovsky remained completely faithful to romanticism, the spirit of romanticism is present in all of Vrubel's works.
Maxim Gorky in the 90s of the XIX century creates a three-part story "The Old Woman Izergil". The romantic work represents exceptional characters: the son of an eagle named Larra and Danko, who tore his own heart out of his chest in the name of people. "
The confrontation between Good and Evil is evident. Larra, who does not know society, its laws and does not try to understand them, is the embodiment of Evil. The tribe in which he found himself is surprisingly wise, humane, fair. The murder of a woman, which Larra commits in front of everyone, is nonsense for them. This is a society of Good.
In the history of Danko, the once strong tribe sank from the upheavals, lost, became a dark, wild crowd, terrible in its unfair anger. And Danko is the height of perfection, brave, persistent, fearless, and most importantly, selflessly loyal to his tribe, ready to lead people out of trouble at any cost. Here, too, is an exacerbated conflict of a strong personality not recognized by a mediocre society. One of them, faceless, even steps on Danko's dying heart, just in case. But Good sprouted in small blue flashes.
Romanticism often uses fantastic stories, grotesque, symbolic, extreme events. Both stories are surreal, intense, emotional.
Larra is the son of an earthly woman and an eagle, a fact that does not exist in itself. There is loneliness raised to a power. Lermontov's Pechorin avoids society and suffers from this, and Gorky's hero late XIX century bears the punishment of loneliness, like God's punishment. This is how Cain was punished, who is being persecuted by everyone, and death itself turned away from him. "The punishment is in himself!" - the tribe pronounces its verdict.
The genre of travel, in which the history of Izergil is written, also speaks about the fact that "Old Woman Izergil" is a romantic work. She is mysterious, incorruptible, selfless (remember how she freed the nobleman from captivity), went through many countries and events. An amazing fate and an amazing rich inner world of the heroine. "
Gorky's story "The Old Woman Izergil" - a story-reflection on the meaning of life, on the problem moral choice, about courage and heroism. Revealing the meaning is facilitated by the amazing composition of the story, which is called "story within a story." The story is divided into 3 parts: the first is the legend of Larra, the second is the story of the old woman Izergil about her life, and the third is the legend of Danko.
Larra was the son of a woman and an eagle. The basis of his character is pride. He puts himself above other people, regardless of their feelings. His pride reaches the point of cruelty. He does not hesitate to kill the chief's daughter because she did not want to become his wife. He does not want to live like other people, he wants to be free, that is, to do what you want, take what you want, without giving anything in return. He “considers himself the first on earth and sees nothing but himself”, this gives him the right to despise people and rule over them, and, as a consequence, people punish him for pride, expel him from his tribe - “the punishment is in himself ". It turned out that Larra cannot be outside of people, he was doomed to eternal wanderings in solitude. In the end, only a shadow remained of Larra.
No less significant is the image of the narrator - the Old Woman Izergil. The old gypsy has a strong, freedom-loving character, which cannot but attract people to her. She loves life and freedom, is able to perceive the beauty of the world around her. But besides that, there is a lot of pride and selfishness in her. She does not want to depend on anyone, saves her lover from captivity, but she leaves him, because she knows that she is no longer loved, and the heroine does not want to accept a feeling of gratitude instead of love. However, her portrait immediately reveals a very significant contradiction. A young girl should have told about beautiful and sensual love, but a deep old woman appears before us. Izergil is confident that her life, filled with love, was completely different from Larra's.
Izergil is very old, she has become almost like a shadow, the same has become with Larra. A special place in the story is occupied by elements of a detailed description of Izergil, such as: "dull eyes", "chapped lips", "wrinkled nose, bent like an owl nose", "black pits in the cheeks", "a lock of ash-gray hair." about the difficult life of the heroine long before she tells her story. An old woman is a person who lives among people.
Danko is the opposite of Larra. He loved people and thought that maybe without him they would perish, dreams of freedom not only for himself, but above all for all his fellow tribesmen, that is why, sacrificing himself, he leads them from the dark forest to the golden shining river. Danko's love for people and his desire to help them are so great that his heart turns into a burning torch, which neither man, nor wind, nor time can extinguish. However, people are cruel, and as soon as they are safe, Danko's proud heart is trampled by a cautious person, frightened of something.
Analysis of an excerpt from the story.
What Danko did is the most beautiful, noblest feat. He helped his relatives, led them away from enemies who threatened to exterminate the tribe. He led me through a terrible, endlessly long forest full of danger. When people got scared, in order to hide it, they began to threaten Danko. And then he tore open his chest and lit up the forest with his heart. People went out, but he died. He accomplished a feat, sacrificed his life for the sake of small, ungrateful people. They are unable to understand true nobility and obey wild, animal instincts. They dance by the fire, rejoicing that the difficulties are behind and have forgotten the one to whom they owe it. And he lies lifeless and they step on his noble heart with a dirty foot. Traditionally romantic hero dies in collision with society and reality. Danko gives his life for the happiness of people, not needing their gratitude and memory.
And only legend sings the name of Danko.

The role of a key sign that the literary method used by the author refers to a romantic manner of transmission is assigned to the image of a person who tends to strive for freedom. These are, as a rule, proud people who do not recognize the laws of society and do not want to put up with them. We come across such characters in works that are included in the category of A.M. Gorky's early work. This line is seen especially clearly when reading the story "The Old Woman Izergil". It is in him that the main idea of freedom is.
Compositionally
the work is presented in the form of three parts. From the mouth of an old woman who maintains a conversation with the author, the reader learns what is contained in the two legends. Two parts are devoted to this. The third part is presented in the form of the life story of Izergil. The first legend tells of a proud guy named Larra, who was the son of an eagle and a woman. Although his mother brought him into human society, he did not want to abide by human laws, since he considered himself above everyone else. He strove for freedom, while he was distinguished by a cruel and selfish character. Larra expressed contempt for the people, so they rejected him, banishing him from the tribe, and punishing him with immortality. This technique is characteristic of romanticism and is presented in the form of a double world: one side is human society with its traditions, and the other is a world in which absolute freedom reigns, which is what Larra aspires to. But this world is turning into an intolerable environment even for him.
The second legend is distinguished by the presence of another sign of romanticism - an exotic landscape. A hostile world means a dense forest in which wild animals live, fear reigns and storms rage. Bitter describes nature as a symbol of a living being, consciously persecuting people. Danko - the hero of the legend is fighting for freedom. He needs it not for himself - for the tribe. He strives to save the lives of other people at the cost of his own life. Danko is distinguished by disinterestedness, therefore, in order to lead the people, it costs him nothing, how to illuminate the road with the flame of his own heart, and perish.

Maxim Gorky's story "The Old Woman Izergil" refers to the early romantic works of the writer. Thus, the story contains two legends. They tell about romantic, exceptional personalities, only these personalities are opposite to each other. If Danko sacrificed himself for the sake of the others, then Larra did not reckon with anything except his desires.
The old woman Izergil tells about these heroes. We will find out about her what she likes among young people, loving life, because the old woman is also cheerful. In addition to legends, the narrator learns about the past of Izergil, about her novels. Can you blame her for changing lovers so often? What did she really need?
The fact is that the old woman herself is also a romantic person. She does not compromise - she needs true love, she needs a man who will be stronger than her in character.
But in her search, she finds only disappointment. The old woman Izergil was married. But not because she wanted it, but because she believed that her age already required it. But she is most comfortable among the strong, singing girls and boys with a beautiful bronze tan, because she herself was once like that.
