Analysis of the work "The Little Prince" by Exupery. Analysis of Saint Exupery's The Little Prince Why The Little Prince
I really liked this book, so I decided to post the most interesting analysis of the book on my website. Semyon Kibalo
Problematic and thematic analysis of the work
The very story of the "Little Prince" arose from one of the plots of the "Planet of People". This is the story of the accidental landing of the writer himself and his mechanic Prevost in the desert. Exupery has key, favorite images-symbols. Here, for example, they are led to storylines: this is the search for water by pilots exhausted from thirst, their physical suffering and amazing salvation.
Audiobook (2 hours):
The symbol of life is water, it quenches the thirst of people lost in the sands, the source of everything that exists on earth, the food and flesh of everyone, that substance that gives the possibility of rebirth.
In The Little Prince, Exupery will fill this symbol with deep philosophical content.
The dehydrated desert is a symbol of a world devastated by war, chaos, destruction, human callousness, envy and selfishness. This is a world in which a person dies of spiritual thirst.
Another important symbol, to which almost the entire work is addressed, is the rose.
Rose is a symbol of love, beauty, femininity. The little Prince did not immediately discern the true inner essence of beauty. But after a conversation with Fox, the truth was revealed to him - beauty only then becomes beautiful when it is filled with meaning, content. “You are beautiful, but empty, - continued the little prince. “You don’t want to die for you. Of course, a casual passer-by, looking at my rose, will say that it is exactly the same as you. But for me she is dearer than all of you ... "
The salvation of mankind from the impending inevitable catastrophe is one of the main themes in the writer's work. He actively develops it in the work "The Planet of People". The theme is exactly the same in The Little Prince, but here it gets deeper development. Saint-Exupery did not write a single work of his own, and did not nurture as long as “The Little Prince”. Often, motives from "The Little Prince" are found in the writer's previous works.
What path of salvation does Antoine de Saint-Exupery see?
“To love is not to look at each other, it means to look in the same direction” - this thought defines ideological plan stories-fairy tales. "The Little Prince" was written in 1943, and the tragedy of Europe in the Second World War, the writer's memories of the defeated, occupied France leave their mark on the work. With his bright, sad and wise fairy tale, Exupery defended the undying humanity, a living spark in the souls of people. In a sense, the story was the result creative path writer, philosophical, artistic understanding of it.
The Little Prince is, first of all, a philosophical tale. And, consequently, a seemingly simple and unpretentious plot and irony hides a deep meaning. The author touches in it in an abstract form through allegories, metaphors and symbols of the theme of a cosmic scale: good and evil, life and death, human existence, true love, moral beauty, friendship, endless loneliness, the relationship between the individual and the crowd, and many others.
Despite the fact that the Little Prince is a child, a true vision of the world is revealed to him, inaccessible even to an adult. Yes, and people with dead souls whom he meets on his way the main character, much more terrible than fabulous monsters. The relationship between prince and rose is much more complex than that of princes and princesses from folk tales.
Romantic traditions are strong in the fairy tale.
Firstly, this is the choice of the folklore genre - fairy tales. The fact that "The Little Prince" is a fairy tale, we determine according to the fairy tale signs available in the story: the fantastic journey of the hero, fairy-tale characters (Fox, Snake, Rose). Romantics turn to oral genres folk art not by chance. Folklore is the childhood of mankind, and the theme of childhood in romanticism is one of the key themes.
Saint-Exupery shows that a person begins to live only for the sake of a material shell, forgetting about spiritual aspirations. Only the child's soul and the soul of the Artist are not subject to mercantile interests and, accordingly, to Evil. Hence, the cult of childhood can be traced in the work of romantics.
But main tragedy The “adult” heroes of Saint-Exupery are not so much in the fact that they are subject to the material world, but in the fact that they “lost” all spiritual qualities and began to exist meaninglessly, and not live in the full sense of the word.
Since this is a philosophical work, the author puts global themes in a generalized abstract form. He considers the theme of Evil in two aspects: on the one hand, it is a “micro-evil”, that is, evil within a single person. This is the deadness and inner emptiness of the inhabitants of the planets, who personify all human vices. And it is no coincidence that the inhabitants of the planet Earth are characterized through the inhabitants of the planets seen by the Little Prince. By this the author emphasizes how petty and dramatic the world of his day is. But Exupery is not at all a pessimist. He believes that humanity, like the Little Prince, will comprehend the mystery of being, and each person will find his own guiding star that will illuminate his life path.
The second aspect of the theme of evil can be roughly titled “macro-evil”. Baobabs are a spiritualized image of evil in general. One of the interpretations of this metaphorical image is associated with fascism. Saint-Exupery wanted people to carefully uproot the evil "baobabs" that threatened to tear the planet apart. "Beware of the baobabs!" - the writer conjures.
The story itself was written because it was "terribly important and urgent." The writer often repeated that the seeds lie in the ground for the time being, and then germinate, and from the seeds of the cedar a cedar grows, and from the seeds of the blackthorn thorns. Good seeds need to germinate. “After all, all adults were children at first ...”. People must save and not lose on life path everything that is light, kind and pure in the soul that will make them incapable of evil and violence. Only a person with a rich inner world and striving for spiritual self-improvement has the right to be called a Personality. Unfortunately, the inhabitants of small planets and planet Earth have forgotten about this simple truth and become like a thoughtless and faceless crowd.
Only the Artist is able to see the essence - the inner beauty and harmony of the world around him. Even on the lamplighter's planet, the Little Prince remarks: “When he lights the lantern, it’s as if one star or flower is still being born. And when he extinguishes the lantern, it is as if a star or a flower fall asleep. Great job. It's really useful because it's beautiful. ”
Saint-Exupery urges us to treat everything beautiful as carefully as possible and try not to lose the beauty within ourselves on the difficult path of life - the beauty of the soul and heart.
The little prince learns the most important thing about the beautiful from the Fox. Outwardly beautiful, but empty inside roses do not evoke any feelings in the contemplative child. They are dead to him. The main character discovers the truth for himself, the author and readers - only that which is filled with content and deep meaning is beautiful.
Misunderstanding, alienation of people is another important philosophical theme... Saint-Exupery not only touches upon the topic of misunderstanding between an adult and a child, but the topic of misunderstanding and loneliness on a cosmic scale. Morbidity human soul leads to loneliness. A person judges others only by the “outer shell”, not seeing the main thing in a person - his inner moral beauty: “When you say to adults:“ I saw a beautiful house made of pink bricks, there are geraniums in the windows, and pigeons on the roofs ”, they do not can't imagine this house. They need to say: "I saw a house for a hundred thousand francs," and then they exclaim: "What a beauty!"
Another key philosophical theme of the fairy tale "The Little Prince" is the theme of being. It is divided into real being - existence and ideal being - essence. Real being is temporary, transitory, and ideal is eternal, unchanging. The meaning of human life is to comprehend, as close as possible to the essence. The soul of the author and the little prince is not bound by the ice of indifference and deadness. Therefore, a true vision of the world is revealed to them: they will know the value of true friendship, love and beauty. This is the theme of the “vigilance” of the heart, the ability to “see” with the heart, to understand without words.
The little prince does not immediately comprehend this wisdom. He leaves his own planet, not knowing that what he will be looking for on different planets will be so close - on his home planet.
People should take care of the purity and beauty of their planet, jointly protect and decorate it, and prevent all living things from perishing. So, gradually, unobtrusively, another important theme arises in the fairy tale - the ecological one, which is very relevant for our time. It seems that the author of the tale “foresaw” future environmental disasters and warned about respectful attitude to the dear and beloved planet. Saint-Exupéry was keenly aware of how small and fragile our planet is. The journey of the Little Prince from star to star brings us closer to today's vision of cosmic distances, where the Earth, through the carelessness of people, can disappear almost imperceptibly. Therefore, the tale has not lost its relevance to this day; therefore its genre is philosophical, because it is addressed to all people, it raises eternal problems.
And one more secret the Fox reveals to the baby: “Only the heart is sharp-sighted. You will not see the most important thing with your eyes ... Your Rose is so dear to you because you gave her all your soul ... People have forgotten this truth, but do not forget: you are forever responsible for everyone you tamed ”. To tame means to bind yourself to another creature with tenderness, love, a sense of responsibility. To tame means to destroy the facelessness and indifference to all living things. To tame means to make the world significant and generous, for everything in it reminds of a loved one. The narrator also comprehends this truth, and the stars come to life for him, and he hears the ringing of silver bells in the sky, reminiscent of the laughter of the Little Prince. The theme of "expanding the soul" through love runs through the whole tale.
Together with the little hero, we rediscover for ourselves the main thing in life that was hidden, buried in all sorts of husks, but which is the only value for a person. The little prince learns what the bond of friendship is.
Saint-Exupery also speaks of friendship on the first page of the narrative. In the author's system of values, the theme of friendship occupies one of the main places. Only friendship can melt the ice of loneliness and alienation, since it is based on mutual understanding, mutual trust and mutual assistance.
“It's sad when friends are forgotten. Not everyone has a friend, ”says the hero of the tale. At the beginning of the tale, the Little Prince leaves his only Rose, then he leaves his new friend Fox on Earth. “There is no perfection in the world,” says the Fox. But on the other hand, there is harmony, there is humanity, there is a person's responsibility for the task entrusted to him, for a person close to him, there is also responsibility for his planet, for everything that happens on it.
A deep meaning is hidden in the image-symbol of the planet, to which the Little Prince returns. It is a symbol of the human soul, a symbol of the home of the human heart. Exupery wants to say that each person has his own planet, his own island and his own guiding star, which a person should not forget. “I wonder why the stars shine,” said the little prince thoughtfully. - Probably, so that sooner or later everyone could find their own again. ” The heroes of the fairy tale, having passed a thorny path, found their star, and the author believes that the reader will also find his distant star.
“The Little Prince” is a romantic fairy tale, a dream that has not disappeared, but is kept by people, cared for by them as something precious from childhood. Childhood walks somewhere nearby and comes in moments of the most terrible despair and loneliness, when there is nowhere to go. It will fit, as if nothing had happened, as if it had not left us for these many years, will sit down on its haunches and ask, looking with curiosity at the crashed plane: “What is this thing?” Then everything will fall into place, and that clarity and transparency, fearless straightforwardness of judgments and assessments, which can only be found in children, will return to an adult.
Reading Exupery, we seem to change the angle of view to banal, everyday phenomena. It leads to the comprehension of the obvious truths: you cannot hide stars in a bank and it is pointless to count them, you need to protect those for whom you are responsible and listen to the voice of your own heart. Everything is simple and complex at the same time.
The main idea of the work "The Little Prince" by Exupery is easily determined after reading.
The main idea "The Little Prince" by Exupery
The author, represented by the Little Prince, shows us what is most important and makes sense in life. How to learn to trust each other, be kind and understand that we are responsible for those whom we have tamed, that we must remember that we are all "from childhood." After all, the Little Prince himself walked this path, learned the world that is around him, and learned to listen to his heart.
“To love does not mean looking at each other, it means looking in one direction” - this thought determines the ideological concept of the story-tale. "The Little Prince" was written in 1943, and the tragedy of Europe in World War II, the writer's memories of the defeated, occupied France leave their mark on the work. With his bright, sad and wise fairy tale, Exupery defended the undying humanity, a living spark in the souls of people. In a sense, the story was the result of the writer's creative path, its philosophical, artistic interpretation. Only an artist is able to see the essence - the inner beauty and harmony of the world around him. Even on the lamplighter's planet, the Little Prince remarks: “When he lights the lantern, it’s as if one star or flower is still being born. And when he extinguishes the lantern, it is as if a star or a flower fall asleep. Great job. It's really useful because it's beautiful. " The main character speaks to the inner side of beauty, and not to its outer shell. Human labor should make sense, and not just turn into mechanical actions. Any business is useful only when it is internally beautiful.
Features of the plot "The Little Prince"
Saint-Exupery takes as a basis the traditional fairy tale plot (Prince Charming, because of unhappy love, leaves his father's house and wanders along endless roads in search of happiness and adventure. He tries to gain fame and thereby conquer the unapproachable heart of the princess.), But rethinks it after his own, even ironically. His handsome prince is just a child, suffering from a capricious and flighty flower. Naturally, there is no question of a happy ending with the wedding. In his wanderings, the little prince meets not with fabulous monsters, but with people bewitched, as if by evil spells, selfish and petty passions. But this is only the outer side of the plot. Despite the fact that the Little Prince is a child, a true vision of the world is revealed to him, inaccessible even to an adult. And people with dead souls, whom the main character meets on his way, are much more terrible than fairy-tale monsters. The relationship between prince and rose is much more complex than that of princes and princesses from folk tales. After all, it is for the sake of Rose that the Little Prince sacrifices a material shell - he chooses bodily death. The story has two storylines: the narrator and the related theme of the world of adults and the line of the Little Prince, the story of his life.
Why did the little prince die?
No, he didn't even die, but committed suicide? After all, he asked the yellow snake to bite him? Did he not want to live? We all read The Little Prince like a fairy tale. The story of how children in a hat are able to see a boa constrictor who swallowed an elephant ... About how a little boy was looking for love all his life. But even the rose did not love him. She demanded attention. And he understood it. Fulfilled her whims, why? Because "we are responsible for those we have tamed"? Then what happens? You don’t love, but responsible? Stupid! And the little prince understood this, he understood that there is no point without love. In a fairy tale, no one ever says "I love you." No one. Everyone is trying to do something, to continue to be useful, to fill their life with missing meaning. But not to love! From what? Because they are afraid? Or not confident in yourself? Or not anyone? Or maybe because love is responsibility. Responsibility for the one you love?
But most importantly, he knew the truth, he knew everything as it was. It didn't have a double bottom. He himself was both a small planet and the space around it. He was everything, life itself. But where is he now? "Why did this boy commit suicide?"
We have become adults. “Adults,” writes Antoine de Saint-Exupery, “are very fond of numbers. When you tell them that you have a new friend, they never ask about the most important thing. They will never say: "What is his voice? What games does he like to play? Does he catch butterflies?" They ask, "How old is he? How many brothers does he have? How much does he weigh? How much does his father earn?" And after that they imagine that they have recognized the person. " We have become such "adults".
We have become "Kings" for whom everything is served. Someone has turned into a "Drunkard" who is ashamed that he drinks, and he drinks in order to forget that he is ashamed. Many have become "Business People" who think they own the stars, when in fact they are in charge of only squiggles. Some live like the Lamplighter - once they helped people, but now they just follow the habit of turning lights on and off. Finally, all the adults became "Geographers" and no longer "mark flowers" on the map, because "flowers are ephemeral."
The seeds of malignant baobabs have sprouted in us. “If the baobab is not recognized in time, then you will not get rid of it,” warns the Little Prince. - He will take possession of the entire planet. He will penetrate her through and through with his roots. And if the planet is very small, and there are many baobabs, they will tear it to shreds. " In general, it is very simple - I got up in the morning, washed myself, put myself in order and immediately put my planet in order. Baobab trees must be weeded out every day, as soon as they can be distinguished from future rose bushes. Their young shoots are almost the same ... "
Antoine de Saint-Exupery writes about the "planet", and it is about the soul. He talks about rose bushes, but talks about the inner light, he describes baobabs, and warns about the dark side of the soul. This pure sermon was understood by not many .. Antoine warned - the seeds of baobabs are constantly sprouting, they can destroy the soul. Our inner light barely dawns. Some boy didn’t hear how “terribly important and urgent” it was to fight the darkness inside.
Why did the Little Prince commit suicide? ..
Let the hearer hear, the knower ... answer ...
And it got through me!
“We are responsible for those we have tamed.” This is wrong. If you are trying to be “responsible” for someone, but you don’t love him yourself, that’s not responsibility — that’s a lie. We are not responsible for those who love us, but for those we love. Love is power. The one who loves is responsible. And then everything is correct, because honestly. And to be responsible without loving is not true.
- Truth is the point after which life begins. You cannot live in a lie. Lying helps to exist, but it kills life. And this is the most difficult thing - not to lie to yourself. You know, I have asked myself for a long time - how is a sage different from a saint? And now I think I understand. A wise person is one who knows the truth about other people, sees what is in their hearts. He is wise. And the holy man ...
"The Little Prince" is childhood, but at the same time a profound work. Antoine de Saint-Exupery put in a light and small fairy tale a reflection of the real adult world with its merits and demerits. In some places it is satire, myth, fantasy and tragic story... Therefore, both small and large readers like this multifaceted book.
The Little Prince was born during the Great patriotic war... It all started with drawings by Exupery, in which he portrayed the very "little prince".
Exupery, as a military pilot, once had a plane crash in 1935 in the Libyan desert. Old wounds, memories of the catastrophe and news of the outbreak of world war, inspired the writer to create a work. He thought about the fact that each of us is responsible for the place where he lives, be it a small apartment or a whole planet. And the struggle casts doubt on this responsibility, because it was during that fierce battle of many countries that lethal nuclear weapons were first used. Alas, many people did not care about their home, since they allowed wars to bring humanity to such extreme measures.
The work was created in 1942 in the United States, a year later it became available to the reader. The little prince became the final creation of the author and brought him worldwide fame. The author dedicated his book to a friend (Leon Werth), moreover, to the boy his friend once was. It is worth noting that Leon, who was a writer and critic, being a Jew, suffered from persecution during the development of Nazism. He also had to leave his planet, but not on his own.
Genre, direction
Exupery talked about the meaning of life, and in this he was helped by the parable genre, which is characterized by a pronounced morality in the finale, an edifying tone of the narrative. Fairy tale as a parable is the most common cross between genres. Distinctive feature fairy tales can be called that it has a fantastic and simple plot, but at the same time it is instructive in nature, helps young readers to form moral qualities, and adults to reflect on their views and behavior. A fairy tale is a reflection of real life, but reality is presented to the reader through fiction, no matter how paradoxical it may sound. Genre originality the work suggests that "The Little Prince" is a philosophical fairy tale-parable.
The work can also be attributed to a fantasy story.
The meaning of the name
The Little Prince is a story about a traveler who wanders the whole universe. He does not just travel, but is in search of the meaning of life, the essence of love and the secret of friendship. He learns not only the world around him, but also himself, and self-knowledge is his main goal. It is still growing, developing and symbolizing an immaculate and tender childhood. Therefore, the author called it "small".
Why a prince? He is alone on his planet, it all belongs to him. He very responsibly approaches his master's role and, despite his modest age, has already learned to look after her. Such behavior suggests that we are faced with a noble boy who manages his property, but what is the best name for him? A prince, because he is endowed with power and wisdom.
The essence
The plot originates in the Sahara Desert. The pilot of the plane, having made an emergency landing, meets the same Little Prince who arrived on Earth from another planet. The boy told his new acquaintance about his journey, about the planets he had visited, about his previous life, about the rose, which was his faithful friend. The little prince loved his rose so much that he was ready to give his life for it. The boy was dear to his house, he liked watching the sunsets, it was good that on his planet they could be seen several times a day, and for this the Little Prince only had to move a chair.
One day, the boy felt unhappy and decided to go in search of adventure. Rose was proud and rarely bestowed her warmth on the patron, so she did not hold him back. During his journey, the Little Prince met: the Ruler, who is confident in his absolute power over the stars, the Ambitious, for whom the main thing is to be admired, the Drunkard, who drinks out of guilt for alcohol abuse, no matter how paradoxical it may sound. The boy even met a Business Man, whose main occupation is counting the stars. The little prince faced the Lamplighter, who lit and extinguished the lantern on his planet every minute. He also met the Geographer, who in his entire life had seen nothing but his planet. The last place of the traveler's position was the planet Earth, where he found a true friend. All major events are described by us in summary books for the reader's diary.
The main characters and their characteristics
Loving does not mean looking at each other, it means looking in the same direction.
A person should take care of his home, and not tear it apart by wars into bloody, lifeless parts. This idea was especially relevant then, during the Second World War. The little prince cleaned his planet every day, preventing the baobabs from becoming rampant. If the world could unite in time and sweep off the face of the earth the National Socialist movement led by Hitler, then bloodshed could have been prevented. For those who love the world should have taken care of it, and not locked themselves in their little planets, thinking that the storm will pass by. Because of this disunity and irresponsibility of governments and peoples, millions of people have suffered, and the writer urges, finally, to learn to loyally and responsibly love the harmony that only friendship provides.
What does it teach?
The story of the Little Prince is surprisingly heartfelt and instructive. Exupery's creation tells how important it is to have a faithful friend by your side and how important it is to be responsible for those whom you have "tamed". The fairy tale teaches to love, make friends, warns against loneliness. In addition, you should not lock yourself in your small territory, fencing off from the whole world around. You need to get out of your comfort zone, learn new things, look for yourself.
Exupery also encourages the reader to listen not only to his mind in making decisions, but also to his heart, because you cannot see the main thing with your eyes.
Interesting? Keep it on your wall! The work of Antoine de Saint-Exupery "The Little Prince" is rightfully considered to be a real pearl of world literature of the twentieth century. An incredibly touching story teaches not only children, but also adults love, friendship, responsibility, empathy. History of creation
An unusual tale that has resonated with millions of hearts around the world for many years, was written French writer in the midst of World War II, in 1942.
In 1935, while flying from Paris to Saigon, Saint-Exupery was in a plane crash. The accident took place in the Libyan desert, and left a deep mark on the soul of Saint-Exupery. Late memories of this incident, as well as deep feelings about the fate of the world, which was at the mercy of fascism, resulted in a fairy tale, the protagonist of which was a little boy.
During this period, the writer, on the pages of his diary, shared his innermost thoughts about the future of mankind. He worried about the generation that received material goods, but has lost its spiritual content. Saint-Exupery set himself a difficult task - to return the lost mercy to the world and remind people of their responsibility for the Earth.
The work was first published in 1943 in the United States and was dedicated to a friend of the writer - Leon Werth, a famous Jewish journalist and literary critic who endured endless persecution during the war. Thus, Antoine de Saint-Exupery wanted to support his comrade and express his active civil position against anti-Semitism and Nazism.
It is noteworthy that all the drawings in the story were made by the writer himself, which further emphasizes his ideas presented in the book.
Theme
In his work, the writer raised many global topics, which for centuries have worried and continue to worry all of humanity. First of all, it is the topic of finding the meaning of life... This is what the Little Prince does, traveling from one planet to another.
The author is saddened that the inhabitants of these planets do not even try to go beyond their usual worlds, and find an answer to the eternal question of the meaning of life - they are quite satisfied with the usual life framework. But after all, only in the search is the truth born, which the protagonist proves, returning in the finale of the narrative to his beloved Rose.
Worries the writer and friendship and love... He not only reveals these burning topics, but also conveys to the readers the whole necessity of responsibility for a loved one, and the whole world as a whole. The little prince works tirelessly to care for and protect his tiny planet. He loves and cares for Rose with all his heart, which remains alive only thanks to his efforts.
The all-consuming evil is represented in the work with the help of baobabs, which can quickly devour all life on the planet if they are not regularly uprooted. This is a vivid image that has absorbed all human vices, which must be fought tirelessly throughout life.
The main idea of the work is in the phrase: "To love is not to look at each other, it is to look in the same direction." You need to learn to trust people, to be responsible for your loved ones, not to close your eyes to what is happening around - this is what the famous fairy tale teaches.
Composition
In The Little Prince, the analysis is based not only on the disclosure of the main themes, but also on the description of the compositional structure. It is based on the reception of dialogue and travel central characters- the storyteller and the Little Prince. In the tale are revealed two storylines- this is the story of a pilot-storyteller, and the theme of the reality of "grown-ups" people directly related to him, and the story of the life of the Little Prince.
Throughout the 27 chapters that make up the book, friends travel around the planets, get acquainted with different heroes, both positive and frankly negative.
Time spent together opens up previously unknown horizons for them. Their close communication allows us to connect two completely different universes: the world of children and the world of adults.
Parting does not become a tragedy for them, because during this time they became much wiser and were able to better understand each other, sharing a piece of their soul, and draw important conclusions.

genre
"The Little Prince" is written in the genre philosophical fairy tale-parable, in which reality and fiction are surprisingly intertwined. Real human relationships, emotions, experiences are hidden behind the fantastic nature of the fairy tale story.
The tale in the form of a parable is the most popular amalgamation of literary genres. Traditionally, the tale is instructive in nature, but affects readers in a soft and unobtrusive manner. In fact, a fairy tale is a reflection of real life, but only reality is transmitted through fiction.
The genre of the parable was also chosen by the writer for a reason. Thanks to him, he was able to boldly and simply express his worried views on moral issues modernity. The parable becomes a kind of conductor of the author's thoughts into the world of the reader. In his work, he discusses the meaning of life, friendship, love, responsibility. Thus, the fairy tale-parable acquires a deep philosophical implication.
A truthful depiction of real life, despite the fantastic nature of the plot, indicates that realism prevails in the work, which is not alien to philosophical allegories. However, romantic traditions are also strong enough in the fairy tale.
